I presume Martinez got the job offer in writing,if he did it should not be too difficult to prove he was offered the job.Or is this just sour grapes on his behalf.

Who cares about him? He's not the manager; Dave Whelan is a clown and Martinez, being one of a few unsuccessful applicants/candidates, wants to blow his own trumpet in light of the weekend's results.

Rodgers is our man now, Wigan can do one.

He did the same thing the previous summer with Villa I think.  A load of speculation and then either a new contract or funds promised and he stays at Wigan.

Betting will be on who he talks to in the summer of 2013.  I suppose it also depends how you read it, he says he was made an offer - not what it was.  For all we know JH could have offered him a doughnut.

well Roberto do you want to manage Liverpool and get them back into the CL and challenging for the premier league title or take Wigan to the next level which would be mid table?".
If that was the thought process going on in his head and he chose Wigan the guy needs certifying.Ring the men in white coats.
Or could it be his Ego wouldn't allow him to accept he didn't get the offer of the job and he made up this story to appease the hundreds of wigan fans world wide.

To be honest I don't really care as he isnt the manager and I didn't want him BUT I don't see what the guy gains by lying about something that everybody in the game (managers, players and prospective employers) could easily prove /disprove. So I'll assume he's telling the truth and casually disregard as totally f'n irrelevant.

What's he waiting for a job bossing Real Madrid, he'll never be asked back here but lets be fair to him he has done a fairly good job keeping Wigan up but it wont last forever, good luck Roberto you'll need it.

Red leader: Liverpool DID offer me the job says Roberto Martinez

The Wigan manager breaks his silence on this summer's search for a successor to King Kenny and reveals he said no to Kop chiefs

Roberto Martinez has claimed he turned down the chance to manage Liverpool.

In an interview to be published on Tuesday, Wigan manager Martinez has spoken for the first time about the extensive talks he held with the Reds earlier in the summer.

“We must educate people," said the Spaniard. "In five or six years, we [Wigan] reap the benefits. Maybe I won’t be there then.

"But this is not why I stayed, when Liverpool made me an offer."

Asked why he did stay, causing Liverpool to hire Swansea's Brendan Rodgers instead, Martinez - who went on a sign a new deal with the perennial relegation battlers - insisted it was because of the support of chairman Dave Whelan.

“I stayed because my chairman is unique," he continued.

"This summer, we sat down together. He had thought about the future of the club, I’d done the same.

“He knew that I had spoken with other clubs. But he is so persuasive... I extended my contract for three years.

“He wants to take the club to the next level. I know it will be difficult, but it excites me a lot."

Wigan should have scored at least one goal against Chelsea on Saturday.

They had more possession and probably more chances but still suffered defeat.....

I can't think of any reason why Martinez would want to reveal his commitment to Wigan by rejecting an offer (real or imagined) from a bigger club now that he hasn't even got the Tottenham job either!

Honestly can't think of a reason...

So basically Mr Martinez, you have no career aspirations for yourself.

You will never get offered a job like that ever again in your career.

Or maybe the reason you did not get it was because the fans did not want you there in the first place.

"When Liverpool made me an offer"

An offer of what? An offer to come and talk about taking the job on in the future? An offer of a free pen if wants to join the membership? Ian Ayre to go hang some pink sweaters up on the line to dry?

Doesn't mean he was offered the job.

"Martinez has spoken for the first time about the extensive talks he held with the Reds ." Where does he talk about that? He talks about Wigan!

Usual media driven spin and I wouldn't take any notice of it.

Liverpool where never going to offer him the job, he was getting used as a pawn to get a better manager.

Dave "The pr**k" Whelan, tried to be Liverpool's mouth piece and turned himself into a complete w**ker.

Or to put it another way...
"I already had a good contract but i wanted a pay rise, so i looked into the Liverpool job. They didn't offer me the job but nobody can contradict me (except the LFC owners, who wont bother responding anyway so what the hell)...and I got a nice pay rise and get to impress Wigan supporters by telling them how I turned down Liverpool."

Then what the F**k was Henry doing having himself photographed in Miami with Martinez, that didn't help matters. I honestly think Martinez and Rodgers are at the same level and wouldn't regard Brendan as being better than Roberto.

Had Rafa rocked up at the managerial unveiling then I would of agreed with you, but that bit of PR in Miami was F***ing stupid!

Aye, tried to link it with this thread somehow, talk of Wigan should probably go in general football now though.
