Kop target Sigurdsson: Rogers to break Swans hearts again

Brendan Rodgers is set to break Swansea hearts again by making Gylfi Sigurdsson his first Liverpool signing.

When the Ulsterman quit last Thursday to take up the dream offer of a three-year contract at Anfield, he assured Swans’ chairman Huw Jenkins that he had no plans to asset-strip his former team.

But the 12-month agreement which prevents Kop boss Rodgers from signing Swansea players does not cover Sigurdsson, the Icelandic international who spent the final four months of the season on-loan from German club Hoffenheim.

And Rodgers made it clear that he is ready to pounce – even though Swansea believed they had a £6.8million agreement in place to sign the 22-year-old permanently.

He said: “When I had a chat with Huw Jenkins the other day, after I told him I was going to Liverpool, I gave him assurances that I wouldn’t be going back for any players. My word still stands on that. But Gylfi came to Swansea because I was the manager there.

“I actually pushed Swansea towards making an agreement with Gylfi – and they eventually did that in terms of the fee and then the salary. But ultimately it’s now down to Gylfi.

“I have told Huw that if I speak to the kid, I will make sure he definitely goes down to Swansea and speaks to the new manager, whoever that is.

“But if Gylfi is not comfortable with that and he comes back on to the market then I have to be interested.”

Rodgers has promised that the men already at Anfield will be given the opportunity to prove themselves – including Joe Cole.

He added: “I’ll take time to assess all the players – including Joe Cole.

“Joe is a multi-talented player and a good guy as well.

“I know him from my time at Chelsea.

“It hasn’t worked for him at Liverpool, but he has gone over to Lille and done reasonably well.”

Pretty sure most people knew this was on the cards, I think he'd add a lot to our squad at a very cheap price considering his age and potential. Easily see this being our first signing.

It seems like there is interest on our part then.

Just depends on whether Gylfi is impressed by the new Swansea manager or not.

Well if they want to sell him and Gylfi refuses to go to Swansea because Brendan isn't there then it is up to Gylfi because they can't sell him to them if he doesn't want to go there.

He doesn"t have to go to the Swans but Hoffenheim could sell to the mancs or any other club that bid the highest,Gylfi is still revered by Hoff supporters and mightened be happy with him going for cheap to us.

They have agreed a fee with Swansea already. They have already given him permission. It's up to him now to agree personal terms and complete a medical.

I didn"t know that FOAR, things could get dirty with the Swans and ourselves if Rodgers goes after him.

Very much so, I think this may show us just how ruthless Brendan is willing to be here. It would ruin his reputation with Swansea completely I reckon if he snatched him from their noses. Is he willing for that to happen?

Of course Gylfi may just like Swansea and their new man and that would be the end of that.

We all know Hodgson is the mastermind who can spot the talent in the Nordic States. If he isn't Hodgson approved, i ain't sold on this Siggyson fella.

Pains me to say we just have to move on from that dismal decision to let him go. Ultimately cost Kenny his job.

       ;D

Let's see how this plays out but this lad the type of player we have been searching for; young, strong, creative and he scores goals. Add to that the fact that he fits Brendan's system and we could be onto a winner.

We'll probably get the odd repetitive post syndrome half-wit drift in with their, "could do better" and "average player", take on things but the truth is; Gylfi ticks all the boxes.

sh*t happens and the lad might like the new boss at Swansea but as Brendan infers Sigurdsson was at the club initially solely because of his influence, a fact that will surely affect the lad's decision ultimately.
