The 'How Do You Pronounce His Name?' Thread
      Jun 10, 2012 06:20:46 am
I was in work the other day and was talking footie with a few people and one lad kept saying 'André Schürrle' would start for Germany this summer. Aside from him being wrong about him starting he was also saying 'Schurrle' in a really distracting way and I really wanted to tell him that's not how you pronounce Schürrle ... problem was I wasn't totally sure how you do!

I was thinking maybe this thread could be a resource for people wanting to know, or maybe even wanting to tell others, how to pronounce names of footballers and staff.

Maybe you just want to get something off your chest about the way a particular commentator pronounces a name or something. Anything like that is welcome.

I just reckoned many heads was better than one and we've people from all over the world here to help us cover loads of languages.

So, to start, how the F**k do you pronounce 'André Schürrle'? I'm assuming you don't say it like (schure-rel) and more like (sure-leh)?

Here is a right winger who played for us from 1933  and retired in 1947.now I never saw this lad play but my Dad often spoke about him.He was South African and his name was Nieuwenhuys but the crowd called him Nivvy and that is how my old Dad referred to him.He played 239 games for us and scored 74 goals,he was 28 years old when the 2nd world war started so i suppose you  could say he was robbed of his prime.

Zhirkov is pronounced Jerk Off :)

I've heard at least 4 different pronounciations of (Sami) Hyppia from commentators down the years:

      Hippia (most used one)
      Hypeia
      Houpia
      Herpia

I was just going for 'Shurl'  :confused-smiley-013:

Kuyt always confused people. I'm heard it pronounced Koit and Kight but I distinctly remember an interview with him where they asked for the correct pronunciation and he said it was Drrk Kout (rolled the 'r' in Dirk).

My son still plays some old fifa games and the commentators sound as though they call him "Quitch"
and on the next in the series they called him "kite". still makes me giggle tbh :)

Its funny because in Netherlands, his name is written as Kuijt. And they pronounce Kait. The 'ij' gives a 'y' sound. Same with van Dijk. Its pronounced as Daik. But in English, written as Duyk.

Same with Cruijff. His name is pronounced Kreiff (cry-ff). And written as Cruyff.

I'm Dutch myself, and you're a bit off. Dijk is indeed pronounced as Daik, but Kuijt isn't pronounced as Kait, because Kuijt has the u, which Dijk hasn't. The uij in Kuijt is pronounced the same as in Cruijff(which isnt pronounced as Kreiff either). Basically this is what his name sounds like in Dutch http://bit.ly/Miy1oH (click on the listen thing on the bottom right)

I don't think the Dutch ui sound exists in English language. Can't think of any examples right now anyway.

Uhmm, that uij in there is pronounced the same as the Kuijt I posted,  I don't hear a difference. Basically uij is always pronounced as ui in Dutch. Doesn't matter if it's in Kuijt or Cruijff or whatever, it's the same.
