      Jul 28, 2012 08:19:21 pm
First blood to Ryan Lochte over Michael Phelps in the Men's 400m Individual Medley.  Phelps only placed 4th.  Pereira (Brazil) and Hagino (Japan) took 2nd and third respectively.

Over to Hannah Miley swimming now in the Women's 400m Medley.

      Come on Hannah!

      Unlucky Hannah, 5th place.

Incredible stat was that YE was only 7 hundreds of a second slower over the last 100m than Ryan Lochte swam, according to Ian Thorpe on BBC now.  I'd seen tweets earlier on that she'd actually gone faster, amazing performance!

On to tonight, Becky Adlington scraped through to the women's 400m freestyle final tonight.  It's not her strongest event, but even so, her qualifying was very tight this morning, and she is the reigning champion.  Tough ask for her in this though.  Likewise GB's Ellen Gandy goes in the final of her weaker event, the 100m fly.  The other final of the evening is the men's 4x100m freestyle relay.  Favourites on qualifying times are Australia v USA v France v Russia with Belgium, Germany, Italy and South Africa the other contenders.

Could be on for a world record here in the women's fly, just!  USA's Dana Vollmer wins in style!

Missed a final out  :f_doh:  South Africa's Cameron Van Der Burgh  wins gold in the men's 100m fly in a new world record of 58.46!  Australia's Christian Springer gets silver with Brendan Hansen of the USA taking bronze.  The 50m specialist took that one out from the gun, and managed to  hold on!

BBC have just shown a clip of the Aussie winning 4x100m men's swim team in the Sydney Olympics.  One of them looked the spit of Skrtel!  Just waiting for the final now.

I think Claire Baldwin just had a pop at Gary Lineker for dissing Adlington's bronze and the swim team as a whole.  Good on you girl!

Thiago Pereira from Brazil got a silver medal yesterday, really happy for him, he's a very hard working guy and his time to become an Olympic medalist has finally arrived.

Our biggest hopes are with Cesar Cielo though, who won gold in 2008.

Ryan Lochte only gets 4th in the men's 200m freestyle.  GB's Robbie Renwick places 6th.  But what a swim by Yannick Agnel from France to take the gold.  He's was miles ahead of the rest of the field, well a whole body length which is miles at this distance.  Incredible, that's 3 swimming golds so far for France!

Really?  That sucks.  The organisation has been pretty good but there have been a couple of majorly embarrassing moments, like the North Korean flag instead of the South Korean one, visa cards (the only payment method other than cash not working at Wembley), but you'd think they could get the national anthems right.

Hope it didn't spoil the lass's night, saw her interview after the race and she was completely overwhelmed, just could not believe what she had just done.

4 golds up for grabs tonight (I think) which includes a chance for Phelps to become the most decorated Olympian in history.

He's good isn't he.  Thought what he said about the doping row was interesting, in that Ye is so young that massive improvements in times are not so surprising.  He cut his times by 5 seconds from the age of 15 to 16.

Diego will be pleased, Cielo got second in his semi final, Magnussen from Australia won in a sub 48 second time.

A water polo player from Cuba, Garcia came second in the second semi!

      Finalists are:

      1.  Magnussen (AUS)
      2.  Adrian (USA)
      3.  Garcia (CUB)
      4.  Verschuren (NED)
      5.  Cielo (BRA)
      6.  Hayden (CAN)
      7.  Agnel (FRA)

Yep, he was right. It's a shame some people automatically think of doping instead of enjoying an immense sporting achievement.

Wow!  Another huge winning margin in the woman's 200m freestyle!  Scmitt (USA) lead that from the start and finished in clear water in a new OR.  Second went to Muffat from France and third to Barratt Australia.

Men's 200m fly up next.  Come on Mr Phelps!  If he wins he will have won it three times in a row, another record!

Have to say he doesn't look overly confident.

Women's 200m Individual Medley final up next.

China's Ye starts in lane 4 and must be favourite after breaking the OR in qualifying.  GB's Hannah Miley starts in lane 1 after coming second in her heat.  Coutts of Australia is the world record holder and goes in lane 5.

Ye wins in another OR record time, out-swam the field on the crawl leg, it was close up til then.  Coutts takes second  and Leverenz of the USA gets third.

Here goes Phelps with a massive lead!  3.4 seconds ahead.  France chasing hard but surely there's too much to do?

USA take gold, Phelp's get his 19th medal!

France take silver and China get bronze.

History being made here.  Well in Michael Phelps!

First and third fastest in the semi-finals. Hopefully a medal in the final and possibly two but it is a strong field they'll be up against.

Michael Jamieson wins silver in the men's 100m!  Gold went to Daniel Gyrtua of Hungary in a new world record!  Jamieson's time of 2.07.43 was a new BR.

      It's raining medals today!

Pissed of with the poor attitude of the swimmers in general.Adlington and Jamieson won medals by getting stuck in and really having a go.
Most of the swimmers seem happy just to get to a final.
Having waited 4 years at least they should come prepared to do PB's you cannot criticise anyone who does a PB but they have been few and far between.
I have noticed that a lot of our swimmers seem small by comparison to some of the others.

That was a brilliant performance by Michael Jamieson and it took a world record to beat him. Another few metres and the Brit would have won it.

      More magic from Phelps.

Won the 200m IM and then came back and dominated his 100m butterfly semi final.

London 2012: Rebecca Adlington considers retiring from swimming

The Guardian, Saturday 4 August 2012

Rebecca Adlington admitted she is considering retiring following a disappointing bronze in the 800m freestyle.

Despite insisting that to view a silver or bronze as losing is "absolutely insane", the 23-year-old defending Olympic champion was visibly upset after being well beaten by the 15-year-old American Katie Ledecky and admitted she was disappointed with her time of 8min 20.32sec, more than six seconds slower than her own world record and 5.69 slower than the winner.

"I can happily say that I have been in four Olympic Games finals, which is incredible, and I'm glad that I've medalled in four as well," she said. "I can definitely look back and be happy with my career [but] there is just an element of disappointment in there as well, obviously."

Asked if she is considering retiring, Adlington said: "I don't really know, to be honest. Obviously I still love the sport or I wouldn't be upset." She is now looking forward to taking a break, starting with the wedding of her close friend and fellow British swimmer Keri-Anne Payne, at which she is to be bridesmaid next month, and a charity bike ride in Africa in October.

When they are over, she said, "That's when I'll sit down with Bill [Furniss, her coach], that's when I'll analyse how much I've missed it in my break. I'll experience that normal life in six to eight weeks and see how I feel. I, honest to God, don't know how I will feel.

"I love the sport but I always feel like I want to finish on a high. If I feel like I've got more to come, more to give, that's something I'll talk about with Bill and we'll talk about getting back in or not."

The fact she had been beaten by a 15-year-old following stand-out performances at the Games by the 17-year-old Missy Franklin, Ye Shiwen, who is 16, and the Lithuanian 15-year-old Ruta Meilutyte, would be a factor in that, Adlington said.

"I can't recover as quickly as I used to. I used to do hard session after hard session, I can't do that so much now I'm 23. People say: 'Oh you're so young', but for distance swimming I'm not so young. It's not an old generation sport."

If she were to retire, she said, she would love to become a swimming commentator. "I've always wanted to do Strictly as well," she said. "I'd be awful because I can't dance, everyone takes the mick out of me 'cos I dance like a mum and point my fingers, but I just love the fact that I would be able to dress up and be girly. People see women in sport as not being girly but I am."

Hoping for Ranomi Kromowidjojo to win her 2nd gold tonight in the 50 meters freestyle final for women, after winning the 100 already. She was looking good in the previous rounds, best time. We can use some wins, only 2 gold so far, 6 medals in total. :P

London 2012: Farewell Michael Phelps, the Olympian beyond comparison

Andy Bull at the Aquatics Centre

      guardian.co.uk, Saturday 4 August 2012 22.59 BST

In 2000, the 15-year-old Michael Phelps was sitting poolside at the Aquatics venue in Sydney, one of 17,000 spectators who had come to see the 4x100m medley relays. Phelps was a gawky, goofy kind of kid, still waiting for the growth spurt that would start the following year. His ears stuck out, and he wore a fringe that could have been cut by his Mum. That night he had his face painted blue and red, and 'Team USA' written across his chest. "I sat there, thinking how cool it would be to swim the relays." Twelve years later, Phelps' career came to a close with one final victory in that same event.

Phelps is adamant that he will never swim competitively again. As his team-mate Nathan Adrian touched the wall, taking the team home in 3min 29.35sec, almost two seconds ahead of Japan, Phelps broke into a gentle smile. It was not a look that spoke of great joy, or enormous passion. It suggested calm, peaceful, relief. Later, on the podium, he stood back and soaked in the adoring applause of the crowd.

This one last gold takes his overall Olympic medal tally to 22, and his collection of golds to 18, which is twice as many as anyone else in history. There will always be debate about whether or not Phelps is the greatest Olympian of all time or, as Sebastian Coe has said, simply the most successful. But statistically you can't even compare him to people anymore. Phelps is in a realm where he is measured against entire nations. He sits 41st in the IOC's historical medal table, above Argentina, India, Mexico and 162 other countries. And that's before you even begin to consider all the other landmarks – the 33 World Championship medals, the 36 world records.

So ends a career that started when Phelps was seven. Back then he was so scared of putting his face in the water that he had to begin by learning the backstroke. Things began to get serious in 1996, when Phelps was just 11. That was the year he first met his coach and mentor Bob Bowman, who burst into the changing room at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club and found a bunch of boys throwing towels and soap around. Phelps took the blame. "What a jerk," he remembers thinking of Bowman. "Thank God I never have to train under that guy."

Little did he realise. Bowman changed his life. And while you never really know what goes on inside someone else's family, it is true to say that as Bowman became more and more involved with Phelps, his own father, who left home when his boy was seven, became more and more distant.

That same year, another swimmer from North Baltimore, Beth Botsford, won gold medals in the 100m backstroke and 4x100m medley at the 1996 Olympics. Phelps watched her on TV, and for the first time began to dream of winning "just one Olympic medal". Bowman always believed he could do it. The next year he arranged a meeting with Phelps and his mother, Debbie. "It is possible that one day Michael might make the Olympics," Bowman told them. "I am not saying he will, I am saying he could, if everyone is willing to make the commitment."

Phelps was. He adopted Bowman's mantra: "We do things other people can't, or won't do." Between 1999 and 2004 there were three – and only three – days when he missed training. These days all the young swimmers who want to get to where Phelps is do the things he does. He had always said he wanted to change the sport, and he has. Just look at the young South African Chad le Clos, who beat Phelps in the 200m butterfly. He says he idolises Phelps, and has learned most of what he knows from asking the master.

The British freestyle swimmer Simon Burnett once said of Phelps: "I think I have figured him out, he is not from another planet, he is from the future. His father made him and made a time machine. Sixty years from now he is an average swimmer but he has come back here to mop up." Sixty years may be an over-estimation. Phelps thinks that many of his records will be broken before long, because the sport is moving on so quickly. He laughs when he sees the age of some of the swimmers winning medals here in London, and says "it is a good time to get out".

At these Olympics, Phelps never tapped into the furious anger that fuelled his swimming between 2001 and 2009. He was already slipping into retirement. He motivated himself by counting off the lasts as he went along – the last 400m IM heat, the last 200m butterfly semi-final, the last 100m butterfly final, and so on. Now, at last, he has ticked them all off. He has won four golds and two silvers here in London. Which still means he has more medals than any other athlete at these Games.

Those who say that he has more opportunities to win medals than great competitors in other sports are right, but then they are also blind to the flip-side of that. Each extra race is another risk, another chance to lose. Phelps competes at four lengths in four different strokes, each as distinct from the other as the long jump is from the 100m, or the marathon from the race walk. And he has mastered them all. "I never wanted to be the second anyone else," he has always said. "I wanted to be the first Michael Phelps." So he is. The first, last and only.

In all fairness though, the Seacrest interview was not a US Team decision. That was the NBC network. The overall US contingent was respectful during the tribute. I agree that NBC should of broadcast the tribute but that doesnt reflect on the US team. NBC is getting hammered by the press here in the US for not showing the tributes, they fu**ed up not the athletes.

Second.  Mad respect for the Brits... you are getting medals everywhere. You have 37 medals 16 Gold.  You got medals in Cycling, Rowing, Shooting, Swimming, Judo, Tennis etc...
