      Olympics: Athletics
      Aug 03, 2012 11:48:31 am
Jess Ennis off to a cracking start running the 100m hurdles in 12.54s, a world best!

Yamile Aldama, the 39 year old, safely through to the final of the triple jump.

Dai Green also safely through to the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles.

Jess leads after the hurdles and high jump with a score of 2249.  USA's Fountain is in second on 2224 and GB's Katarina Johnson-Thompson is in third on 2146.  Dobrynska is in 12th place on 2056 and Chernova is in 16th on 2031.

PB for her wasn't it?  Gives her a chance with her weaker day coming up tomorrow.  Good luck Jess!

Really hope she can win the gold, she's had a couple of shakey events and a couple of personal bests but overall is in a very strong position. The hurdles performance really was outstanding, apparently would of been good enough to win gold in Beijing.

Must make a special mention for her abs too, dear god how did someone suggest she is fat, the close up on the run to the line, abtastic!!!

      Now win it!

It was. In fact she ends with her best ever score after the first day. Good platform for tomorrow and she will have everyone behind her.

When someone called her fat I think they were suggestig that she was a kilo or two above her optimum weight. She definitely isn't fat though. Weight's a pretty intriguing aspect to sport. Bradley Wiggins lost nearly 20kg when he moved from track to road cycling. I believe he now weighs around 65kg. Helps in that discipline. Take someone like Emma Pooley in the womens road cycling who is only something like 49kg but because she is small she's an incredible climber of hills. Carrying weight really is a disadvantage in most sports. Heck Seb Vettel weighs just under 60kg in f1. Any more extra can cost him a good couple of seconds or so in a Grand Prix.

Jessica Ennis had us all worried there! Had a poor first long jump but the second one? She nailed it!

Great effort that, keeps a decent margin between herself and Chernova.

:o  Defending champion LaShawn Merritt is out of the men's 400m.  Had to pull out of his heat, obviously carrying an injury.

:o  Dobrynska has a disaster in the long jump.

Huge third jump for Jess!

      6.48m!

Decent effort by Liverpool's 19 year old Katerina Johnson-Thompson too, she moves up to 12th position.  Great experience for her.

Good start for Jess in the javelin, throws over 46m.

Even better, her final throw is out to 47.49m!  That a huge improvement on her PB!

Ennis has 5971 points, the Lithuanian, Austra Skujte is second on 5,783 points, Lyudmyla Yospenko third on 5,701 and Tatyana Chernova has dropped to sixth. Katarina Johnson-Thompson is 16th and Louise Hazel is 30th.

Come on Jess, just the 800m to go!

FFS, I wish these F***ing commentators would stop with their guaranteed a gold medal remarks about Jess.  Jesus Christ, anything could happen.  Don't count your chickens and all that.  As Jess said herself, I'm waiting until I cross the line.

      Commentators do my head in!

Ahhh, Dai Greene only comes 4th in his semi final :(

His time is 48.19, can he qualify as a fastest loser?

Holy sh*t, look at Angelo Taylor go over the first 250!  Dying in the home straight though.  Jack Green clobbered a hurdle and couldn't continue :(

Slowish race, Dai could still go through.

Poor Jack Green, he was so angry with himself in that interview.  Really feel for him.

Well that semi was also a slowish one so Dai Greene qualifies for the final.  Hope he can turn it around.
