That's a horsesh*t way to do business and if the club really did that, I'm embarrassed as a supporter. He deserved better than being shipped off without someone at the club letting him know directly. Whether his agent knew or not, the first call should have come from the club, either Ayre or Klopp.

Sadly this has happened a few times now, with Reina being the best known example. Maybe it is to keep the media from finding out too early or maybe just bad manners.

Just because the club accepts the offer doesn't mean you have to leave? It just means the club accepts another clubs valuation of you.

Acting as if he was kicked out the door. Dissapointing

How would you feel if you knew your employers are looking into cashing in on you?, don't think it sends out the message that you are wanted..

That sounds like a more realistic possibility than Allen not having an inkling that he was going to be sold. It seemed fairly clear from an outside perspective and as said, he has an agent.

He may not have been told 'you've been sold', but there's no doubt he would have known discussions were under way.

In American professional sports at least (something I'm pretty familiar with), it's typically good form for the coach to let a player know he is being traded or let go. The only way that someone gets let go without a face to face is if they are a problem individual. To not have a sit down or face to face with Joe telling him that they are looking to move him after he's been nothing but a model pro for us is embarrassing and not how we should be doing business.

Seemed clear to me after all the reports during and after the Euros that Joe's position was pretty clear. We'd get offers and if the right one came along we'd take it. For me to be under that impression I'm sure Joe wasn't left with many illusions about his future here but I do understand your point.

Joe Allen: I found out from friend's text I was leaving Liverpool
Joe Allen was having a short holiday in Ibiza last month, reflecting on Wales’ remarkable Euro 2016 journey, when he discovered Liverpool were selling him to Stoke.

After four years at Anfield he left as a cult hero with supporters, a hugely popular figure in the dressing room with his reputation enhanced after playing a key role in helping Wales to reach the semi-finals.

He is now focusing on a new chapter in the Potteries and hopeful of making his home debut against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Saturday, after sealing a £13  million move. But sitting at Stoke’s training ground on Thursday after agreeing to a rare interview, he admits the way it ended at Liverpool left a sour taste.

Allen is low maintenance, reluctant to make headlines and chooses his words carefully, yet clearly feels his departure could have been better handled.

“I actually had a text message off a friend congratulating me about making the move when I didn’t even know it was happening at the time,” he says. “Not knowing whether the club intend to sell you or keep you, especially when you’re trying to ask the question, is disappointing.

“If I’m honest, to find out they accepted an offer through the press isn’t the best way of going about business, I don’t think. The communication wasn’t great but as soon as Liverpool accepted an offer I knew what their intentions were for me. It was a bit strange but that’s how things happen sometimes. There was no real goodbye, but I’m not the most sentimental person anyway. It’s irrelevant now because sitting here I’ve got the move I wanted.”

Allen bears no grudges and, indeed, says he has many fond memories of his time at Liverpool. He was infamously branded “the Welsh Xavi” by Brendan Rodgers shortly after moving from Swansea in 2012 and it is easy to forget the role he later played when Liverpool chased Manchester City for the title.

When Rodgers was sacked in October last season, he had to start again under Jürgen Klopp but proved himself to earn the respect of Liverpool fans. His sale polarised opinion among those supporters, with many claiming Liverpool should have offered him a new contract. But the lack of game time – just eight Premier League starts last season – made it an easy decision.

“Being a regular wasn’t going to happen and that’s fair enough. If you look at the quality Liverpool have got in midfield, and maybe the age of the players, I think I’d have been waiting for injuries and suspensions. Realistically, if you’ve been there four years you expect more than that.

“I’m not going to be happy unless I’m on the pitch on a regular basis. I’m 26 now and the next four or five years are going to be my best. I’m really excited about this move because the ambition is there to get better. In the three seasons Mark Hughes has had you’ve seen the progress Stoke have made, the players he’s brought in and the style he has imposed. We’ve finished ninth three seasons running and the aim now is to look at those places above.”

Stoke’s capture of Allen is even more impressive when you consider his performances at the European Championship. The heartbeat of the Wales midfield, he produced his best display in the stunning victory over Belgium and was deservedly named in the Team of the Tournament.

Those ‘Welsh Pirlo’ comparisons with the Italian maestro did not seem so far-fetched. The fairy tale ended against eventual winners Portugal in the semi-final but Allen admits it was a life-changing event.

“As a Welshman I’d always dreamed of reaching a major tournament and wondered if it would ever happen but reaching the semi-finals is unforgettable. We were riding the crest of a wave, getting better and better, but Portugal was just one step too far. It maybe caught up with us.”

All the attention garnered from Euro 2016 was a new experience for Allen, who readily admits he is an Average Joe. He is private and humble, though Liverpool players will tell you he was one of the most outgoing members of the squad. It was once revealed that he keeps chickens with his wife Lacey, but other details about the Welshman are scarce. So who is the real Joe Allen?

“I’m a family guy who likes to fly under the radar. That’s why I don’t like talking about chickens! I’ve never really been comfortable in the spotlight. I’ve still got a family home in Swansea and get back when I can. People who know me probably get to see the real me.

“I’ve been asked about Twitter before and people say I should make more of an effort to get on there. At a club like Liverpool which has global support, people do want more access into you and your life, but I’m a bit more old school.”

It is no wonder, then, that he looked so uncomfortable on the Being: Liverpool documentary.

“That was one of the things that scarred me!” he says, laughing. “I remember walking through the door and there was a camera crew there. That’s an example of where I’m out of my comfort zone and I’m not a big fan of that side of things.

“I’m a footballer and my job is out there on the pitch. I’ve always been a team player and seen my role as helping the team function better. I think I’ve got attributes that can help Stoke.

“Everyone is keeping an eye on Guardiola but we’re hoping to make it very difficult for him and his team on Saturday.”

Haven't there been occasions though when players have been brought into the coach's office and told he was being traded with the play having no clue? I've seen it on hard knocks a few times.

I'm not defending the fact that we didn't have a sit down with him, that's definitely poor form but he's bullshitting if he didn't have a clue he was being sold.

      Yep.
A poor way for him to find out, but we'd only accepted an offer and he was on holiday.
Like others, I'd ask where his agent was in all of this, and who leaked the accepted bid to the media.

That's what I'm saying though....bring him into your office and tell him he's being "traded". Don't just leave him to find out from a friend of his congratulating him. Man up and tell him face to face, don't leave it to an agent or whatever.

The most shocking thing about this transfer was the fee. He's only 26. If he was José Allenos he would of gone for £20m+

If he had to find out from a friend then maybe he should sack his agent for doing a sh*te job instead of mouthing off against the club.

      Agree, mate.

Just doesn't happen like that these days. I remember either Harry Redknapp or Big Sam saying a transfer starts weeks before it's done. Agents are always talking and negotiating.

Yeah agree it was pretty obvious Allen was going to be sold with all the stories, but I'd argue the club still have an obligation to tell him man-to-man what the plan was. He is a human being, after all, not a commodity.

A human being on a vast amount of money us non-sport playing humans will probably never see. He can go and console himself with that.

And I wish someone would tell the press the "Pirlo" moniker was a scouse piss take!!

Exactly mate, I can't feel to sorry for him, he will have got a hefty sign on fee, been paid a fortune for being incredibly average throughout his time here and now he's having a moan about it.

Just another example of footballers not living in the real world!

it doesn't change anything but it does reflect an underlying problem of man management and being seen to do the right thing which is important in attracting players. Having a reputation for treating players poorly will not help us attract players and how much is a phone call or better still a face to face as we did with Benteke. its called having "class" which we used to have.

I hear ya Walt and like I said A) we have form and B) it's not good.

      BUT...........

I'm not remotely convinced that how (at the end of their time here) they find out that a transfer bid (they know is in the wind) has been accepted is gonna influence whether they sign in the first place.........

Surely it's the managers job to inform the player.

He's in charge of playing staff after all.

Easier to blame someone else though.

Maybe the manager didnt know either. He'd ok'd that yes if x amount is offered then take it, but when x amount was offered and the club took it  somebody spoke to the press before Joe ( or his agent) or even the manager. It might even have come from the Stoke end.

It is poor though, and we do have past form with this.

I'd be gobsmacked if Klopp didn't know.
He was at the club (as in not on holiday), training, making plans, and no doubt spoke to Allen at some point, because it's been mentioned a lot that he (Allen) was told he would have limited playing time this season.

I'm probably just being old fashioned when I take the view that it's the manager's job to tell the player, but I stand by it, and I don't think Klopp is a man who would shirk the more difficult (not pleasant) tasks.

It's also a bit disingenuous that he was "told he was being transferred" as some reports have suggested.
All we did was accept a bid, the rest was up to Joe, his agent and the buying club.

Anyhoo, it's all a bit of a storm in a teacup, and I wish Allen all the best.
A cracking little player who suffered from not being a specialist. A bit of a jack of all trades, but didn't really shine at anything for us.
Of course he has a different role for Wales, that plays more to his strength of being a hustle type player who's a decent passer.

Agents play a big part in transfers, he'd have been negotiating a deal between the clubs for there to be any deal to be accepted so why didn't he tell Allen?

It's great to see that he's still carrying on with his improvements on the pitch. He's definitely been the bright light in what has been a terrible start to the season for Stoke.
