Liverpool out to extend 40-year run at Young Boys
Liverpool FC will hope to extend their 40-year unbeaten run against Swiss opposition when they face BSC Young Boys in Berne, as the two clubs meet for the first time in Europe.

BSC Young Boys will look to become the first Swiss side to beat Liverpool FC in over 40 years as the Reds come to Berne in UEFA Europa League Group A.

      Previous meetings
      • The sides are meeting for the first time in Europe.

      • Young Boys' only previous encounter with English opponents saw them lose out to Tottenham Hotspur FC in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League play-offs. They won 3-2 in the first leg in Berne, but three goals from former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch helped Spurs win the return leg 4-0.

      • Liverpool's record in eight games against Swiss sides reads W5 D2 L1 (W2 D1 L1 in Switzerland – W3 D1 L0 at home). Their only defeat against Swiss opponents came at Servette FC in September 1971, and they are now unbeaten in seven games against Swiss clubs.

      Match background
      • Young Boys reached the round of 32 at the end of their only previous group stage campaign in 2010/11, losing out to FC Zenit St Petersburg.

      • A 2-0 defeat against FC Midtjylland in their play-off decider brought an end to Young Boys' ten-game unbeaten home run in UEFA club competition, which comprised eight wins and two draws.

      • UEFA Champions League regulars Liverpool competed in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the first time in 2010/11, making it to the round of 16, where they lost out to SC Braga.

      • The Reds are unbeaten in five European games, including all four under their new boss Brendan Rodgers. Both their away games in UEFA Europa League qualifying ended in 1-0 wins.

      Team facts
      • This is Liverpool's 100th UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League game, with their record in the previous 99 reading W55 D26 L18.

      • Liverpool have had two notable Swiss players: defenders Stéphane Henchoz (1999-05) and Philipp Degen (2008-10). Henchoz is remembered particularly fondly, having helped the Reds to win a treble of the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup in 2000/01.

      • Young Boys' right-back Scott Sutter was born in England, and played youth team football for Millwall FC, Barnet FC, Aston Villa FC and Charlton Athletic FC before moving to his father’s home country and starting his professional career with Grasshopper-Club.

      • Young Boys' Canadian winger Josh Simpson started his career in England, representing Millwall FC from 2004-06.

      • Capped five times by Switzerland, Young Boys' coach Martin Rueda was a defender for Grasshopper-Club, FC Wettingen 93, FC Luzern and Neuchâtel Xamax FC before moving into coaching. He took charge of Young Boys in 2012 following a two-year spell with FC Lausanne Sport, in which his side reached the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League group stage.

      • Rodgers replaced Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool coach at the end of the 2011/12 season, having won promotion to the Premier League with Swansea City AFC and led the Welsh club to a comfortable mid-table finish in their first season back in the top flight. Born in Northern Ireland, he had to end his playing career at 20 due to a knee condition, but made his name as a coach with Watford FC and Reading FC. He is coaching in Europe for the first time this season.

Our First "proper" European game for over a year. Lets hope it gets off to a winning start.

I have no idea if we will put out a strong team aiming for a solid start, or just play it safe considering we have a huge game on Sunday.

Personally a win is essential, once qualification is established then, maybe we can take the pedal off the gas, but winning breads winning, and at present, we need to crack that bone of contention. So for me, we must go for it, all guns blazing.

Do they play on an artificial pitch.
I watched the games V Spurs and I vaguely recall that being used as an excuse in the first leg.
We'll need a mixed team. Don't think it would be right to go with too many youngsters.

Shelvey, Pacheco, Suso,  Yesil should all be in the squad.

I'd give Shelvey and Assaidi starting roles along with Sahin and Coates.

      Hate these 6pm ones.

Reina; Kelly, Skrtel, Coates, Enrique; Allen, Sahin, Shelvey; Assaidi, Borini, Pacheco.

Hope Suso and Yesil make the bench.

I'd go for an almost complete change for this one as we have enough experience players to play alongside the youngsters.

      Jones

      Flanagan Carra Coates Enrique

      Henderson Sahin

      Suso

      Pacheco Borini Assaidi.

I think we can give our-selves a big boost by taking 3 point here, grabbing away point is always important and I am sure Young Boys will be up for it like they were when Spurs came into town a couple year ago.

I also like that we'll be playing in Wankdorf Centre, sounds nice, sticky but nice.

I remember watching this team once (Maybe the CL against Spuds I think). The players play with a lot of passion. This will be a very very tough game for us.

P.S. Scums on Sunday is the more important game for us.

Really looking forward to this one, also looking forward to seeing a few more of the young players given some game time.

I'd pick this side on Thursday:

Jones - Give him some minutes, may do Reina some good to have a rest.

Johnson - A big threat going forward, wouldn't mind seeing him play on the wing sometime.
Carragher (c) - Experience in these sort of games and will help Coates out.
Coates - Aerial threat and deserves some game time.
Enrique - Needs to get 100% for Sunday, I don't like Johnson playing left back when we have Enrique, Downing and Robinson on the bench.

Shelvey - Always a threat going forward and never fails to disappoint.
Henderson - Not played much this season and can only see him being used in these type of games, will be good to see him play.
Sahin - Give him some game time ahead of the United game, can't wait to see him in full flow.

Downing - Looks better going forward this year and could pop up with a goal or two.
Suarez - Can't see him missing this one out, our biggest threat for goals and always works hard.
Assaidi - Can't wait to see him play, give him 60 or so minutes.

Subs; Gulacsi, Flanagan, Kelly, Coady, Suso, Pacheco, Morgan.

With the United game coming up on Sunday I think BR will rest the big guns (and Sterling  ;) ) and put in some of more youngsters in along with some of the 'Fringe' players.

I'd like to see Suso come on for Sahin (who needs to build his fitness up) for about 20 or so minutes. Also I'd give both Pacheco and Morgan a run out, on for Downing and Assaidi.

I'm not sure where Joe Cole is, but if he is fit, which I hope he is, I'd put him on the bench for Coady.

I think this will be a tough game but I think even with a lot of changes that we will win here.

I'm going for 0-2, with Johnson and Shelvey scoring the goals.

Sorry for the long post but already looking forward to the game  :kop5cf8koxp6:

I'm saying a draw and first team starts for Assaidi and Yesil. As long as no damage is done to our main men and we avoid defeat I will be happy. Draw away win at home and we'll piss this group.

Just my gut feeling that we will be thinking of Sunday and it will backfire.

Spurs struggled here with a full strength side and we may rest key players.
