Zinedine Zidane headbutt statue unveiled in French capital

A five-metre high statue of Zinedine Zidane's famous headbutt on Marco Materazzi has been unveiled in Paris.

France captain Zidane was sent off in the 2006 World Cup final, which his team went on to lose on penalties, for headbutting Italy defender Materazzi.

The bronze statue, sculpted by Algerian artist Adel Abdesseme, is on display outside the Pompidou Centre in the French capital.

Real Madrid and Juventus legend Zidane retired after the game in Berlin.

Materazzi has admitted he provoked Zidane by making comments about the France midfielder's sister.

Zidane is now working as a sporting director for former club Real Madrid.

I was reading about that earlier.

The detail on the sculpture looks amazing.  :gt-happyup:

They should have gone for the moment he hit that volley against Leverkusen in the CL. Sad in my opinion that his entire career has been overshadowed by one moment of madness in his last ever game.

      Great player.

      Typical French.

Lets celebrate an act of violence, that culminated in their national team losing the World Cup Final.

I find it quite amusing that they almost ignore the sheer genius of Zidane and make a statue of his crazy 5 minutes.

Still consider him the best player I've ever seen. His headbutt summed him up though, he did things in the moment and on the pitch lived in the moment, whether it was a moment of sheer brilliance like his goal in the CL final or a moment of madness, like the headbutt.

Sad that people will always think of the headbutt when they think of him, because he's right up there with the best players ever in my view.

I think it shows a sense of humour that, and forgive me if I'm wrong, your seemingly xenophobic post is lacking.

An iconic image no doubt but Repbrobate's right. Of all the moments he gave us they decide to sculpture that?

I always think Zidane was a true artist of football. Where the likes of a Messi or a Ronaldo used the ball as a weapon, Zidane used it as a paintbrush! He caressed the ball like it was his own baby and empowered those around him. For that he is the ultimate footballer and along with srslfc and RedWilly he is the greatest footballer I have ever seen.

Was my first thought when I heard the story on SSN Thursday morning!

Not forgetting it was his last moment on a football pitch.

Very sad that, one of the best players ever and that's what they have done to remember him. Shocking really.

Lads I wouldnt get so offended the artist is most likely taking the piss or doing it for shock value, its nothing to do with commemorating Zidane's career, i seen this statue last year in a gallery in New York his other work included a wall of animals that were burned and stitched together it was between 10 and 20 foot long so that statue is fairly light hearted compared  to some of the other stuff he had. When i seen that statue i thought it was funny to be honest.

I recall when they put the statue outside Lewises and the publicity that generated,it was headlines in the Echo and being in Liverpool it created a lot of jokes, as you would expect.
