Why do we want a player 'similar to Can' when we can do so much better? F***ing hell - if Ross Barkley is the answer then we're asking the wrong questions.

I agree with you. I don't think he's good enough (currently) to play in our first 11.

But we will lose Can for nothing in the summer. If he had a couple of years left on his contract what would his current value be? 20-25m maybe? More in today's market perhaps?

Barkley is that sort of standard. That sort of price range. More because he's English actually.

He's available on a free this summer so because we've lost a potential 25m on Can, it would just be a simple way of getting that money back.

If we signed Barkley in July we could rotate him, play him in cup games, see if he's good enough at this level (I think he has potential to excel in the right team, under the right manager).

If he's not good enough for us then we sell him the following summer and we get the money back that we should have got for can. Win win.

So we'll have another Markovic on our books, who'll hardly play, cost us in inflated wages, and be damned difficult to get rid of?

He's been injured all season.

Plus he fell out with Koeman, told the ev he wouldn't sign a new contract, had a medical at Chelsea but changed his mind last minute.

He's burnt his bridges there.

How is he another markovic? What a weird comparison. We wouldn't be spending 20m on him for starters and with Can leaving, maybe Milner too, then there is plenty of game time and room for his wages there.

Oh and there would definitely be interest in him if we were to sell him. Wouldn't be difficult to offload at all.

Not for me either. Has ability no doubt, but hasn't come on, undisciplined and is injured a lot.
We have Keita coming in summer anyway, who seems a relatively similar player, but better, who plays regularly and is producing.

Can't think of a player more suited to the way we play. He's available, affordable and won't be Cup tied either. 'Prem proven' too. He's probably the only player out there who fits the bill.

He's on 140k a week apparently. At this stage of his career he's probably looking at increasing that by 100k and they're probably roughly the figures being discussed with city.  Not sure we would pay that.

We've started to play a 4-4-1-1 at times so we could get away with replacing Coutinho without having to get a like-for-like.

The only head ache around that is we got to "spend" for another CM/DM if we cant bring in Goretzka, unless Grujic has a good pre season and Jürgen trusts him as a good enough squad player. We'll have Milner, Hendo, Gini and Keita to play the #6 role if reqd.

From our point of view yes but I can't see any other club thinking any different on a permanent with his wages (140 pw) and he's unlikely to take  cut to secure a permanent
