Why do we want a player 'similar to Can' when we can do so much better? F***ing hell - if Ross Barkley is the answer then we're asking the wrong questions.
I agree with you. I don't think he's good enough (currently) to play in our first 11.
But we will lose Can for nothing in the summer. If he had a couple of years left on his contract what would his current value be? 20-25m maybe? More in today's market perhaps?
Barkley is that sort of standard. That sort of price range. More because he's English actually.
He's available on a free this summer so because we've lost a potential 25m on Can, it would just be a simple way of getting that money back.
If we signed Barkley in July we could rotate him, play him in cup games, see if he's good enough at this level (I think he has potential to excel in the right team, under the right manager).
If he's not good enough for us then we sell him the following summer and we get the money back that we should have got for can. Win win.
