Since summer 2015 to now, we've spent what? 70 million on transfers if you include what we've sold? 26 million coming in soon for Sakho so about 45 million.... surely we can afford to throw some big money at a decent CB that will improve us?

Virgil van Dijk is not the only good centre back in the world.

I felt like it needed writing down, lest we all start believing he is. He's not even a "proven" talent either, has barely played two seasons of Premier League football.

I can't believe we're being so inept at getting him AND so stubborn not to consider other options.

This is Liverpool though and in my 26 years on the planet we've always seemed to like making things difficult for ourselves.

Buying a centre half would be too easy. Much rather risk a defensive crisis.

But, as it goes, it turned out we were cleared of wrong doing weren't we? Basically apologised for no reason. They played us a treat and FSG fell for it hook line and sinker. Bet if we had just put an offer in they would have ended up selling because it's all well and good saying they will reject all offers but when a club like Saints, who essentially now have to sell to buy start getting offers that big, it changes things. Don't get why else they would be signing CB's. They have about 6 at the club now, they are out of 1 cup already, aren't in Europe and have no heavy fixture congestion.
We got completely humiliated by Saints. If you don't make an offer then you wont be signing top players. Clubs who have players who want to leave aren't going to be inviting offers for the player, they will hope there is no offer and then the player has a change of heart and wants to stay.

That said though, VVD is a complete cock for signing that contract in the first place!!!

Well that was all a surprise.

Anyway, there's always January.

Oh dear.

Seemed so promising after the Keita deal was announced (timely?) and our bid for Lemar was reported as accepted that for a moment I thought we might actually be able to come out the other side feeling quite good about the business we'd done this summer.

True, Salah looks a fantastic buy and we've added some depth with the addition of Oxlade-Chamberlain (the last time I'm ever typing his full surname) and Robertson, but I reckon we've done about a third to a half of the business that needed to be done, and in that half was arguably the most crucial position of all -- CB.

We will once again have to hope/pray/(ride our luck!) that this won't be as much of an issue as we fear (at least til Jan, when we'll obviously sign VVD), and that our attacking play can help to compensate for some of those weaknesses.

Gutted we didn't have a back up for VVD and to not get an attacking central mid has left a sour taste on this Transfer window.

and finally OX, think he will be good back up if God forbid, Mane or Salah get injured.
