Mbappe wants to leave PSG at end of this season, we know he’s very fond of Liverpool...

Maybe our low net spend the last couple years was building up to get him?  :P

Realistically though, has to be Real bound I’d say.

I think he'd disrupt our wage structure, even if he joins us on a free. And the upfront sign on fees ain't gonna come cheap because we saved on the acquisition.

I thought it'd been changed to 18 now?

Unless it's just been changed, 8 players must be home-grown, and 4 of those must be Liverpool-trained (3 seasons training in the country and/or at the club before turning 21). That leaves 17 of the 25-man squad who don't have to fit that requirement.

Current U-21 players don't need to count against either restriction, but if a club registers fewer than 4/8 home/Liverpool-grown, than you lose the corresponding number of roster spots from your 25, so an under-21 player might be included in the 25.

So for us (and I'm spitballing here), our English home grown players are Gomez, Henderson, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlin, Trent, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Rhian Brewster and Nat Phillips. I know Scots players do not count for this but I think Welsh players like Neco Williams (under 21) and Harry Wilson (over 21) might (anyone?)

Players meeting the Liverpool-trained requirement are Gomez, Trent, Curtis, Rhian and Nat (Harvey Elliott has only been with the club one season even though his age is right). We will need four from that list on the squad list, or we would not be able to list 25 overall.

So against 17 non-homegrown players (over 21) we currently have 15:
      Alisson
      Adrian
      Virgil
      Tsmikas
      Robbo
      Fabinho
      Wijnaldum
      Keita
      Grujic
      Shaq
      Bobby
      Sadio
      Mo
      Minamino
      Divock

(I'm not counting Loris Karius as I can't imagine he will be in our registered squad. Caiomin Kelleher turns 22 in November, but I'm not sure when the cutoff date is. He would count as home-grown since he's been here since 2015.)

So if we register 8 English and 4 Liverpool-trained players from those above lists, even if we keep all 15 of the foreign players listed, you could still bring in and register two more foreign players.

Since the transfer window closes in October this season, I presume that is when the squad registration deadline is.

i don't think we'll sign anyone before the Chelsea and Lincoln City games. there's a small window between those and hosting Arsenal on the 29th but i'm not sure we'll squeeze a transfer in there either - just thinking in terms of when and how we like to announce these things, giving them enough spotlight away from big fixtures. we might announce a signing before the Villa game on October 3?

      Question..

Is their potential of 1 or 2 loan signings coming in for the season to fill whatever gaps we believe might sit in the squad?

Other big clubs use the loan scenario and some quite regular and quite well.

Not looking for pros v cons or complaints about not spening etc, the question is clear so no need to deviate.

I think if we were to loan anybody of decent enough quality though, we'd still have to fork out quite a bit. Just to use Coutinho to Bayern last season as an example - I think they paid near enough £10M for the loan fee and then covered the full cost of his wages, which would have been around 200K per week (so an extra £10M on top. £20M in total)

I think paying £10-£20M all in for a stop gap signing who would only be with us a season and have no sell on value would go against a few of FSG's fundamentals

Money to spend now on players Jürgen wants and a chance to get Brewster back in a buyback clause if he does well there.

      For a club that's got a budget of 0, it's a decent move.

Depends if we get enough for him to fund another transfer, but it would have to bring in another forward, the though of only having Origi and Shaq scares the sh*t out of me. Sure we have Minamino and I have high hopes for him, but its not guaranteed he'll perform well.

I agree dependent on the buy back clause if he doesn't go on and make it we have a decent sum for someone who in fairness has not prooved it yet although sure he will
