and its unfair to call out Sturridge on the Lamela goal when it was a collective failure.
If you review the goal again you could argue that VVD was the closest to Lamela and could have blocked the shot had he closed him down instead of stopping

He does not get much chance these days, to be fair. Although still quite capable of putting the ball into the back of the net.

      Very harsh and entirely undeserved.
He came on and no doubt received a word in the ear as to his attitude and application in the remainder of a scrappy game where the priority was retaining a one goal advantage.

If Studge took it upon himself to teararse about leaving gaps that may have lead to an equaliser Jürgen would be not to pleases .
Undeserved criticism as you point out.

Leaving gaps by running around when hes the furthest player up the pitch;  not sure what your smoking mate.
He hasn't exactly covered himself in glory, when consistently cant be arsed to break into a sweat.  He looked to have a spring back in his step during preseason, however seems to have lost a yard again when given real opportunities.

Should’ve done better for the goal on Saturday but hard to criticise him in open play so far.

Agree, but at the same time, he isn’t put in that situation if Gomez doesn’t miss what should have been a straight forward header.

What are the real opportunities he’s been given since pre season?

Vs West Ham - came on in the 87th minute and scored in the 88th.

Vs Palace - came on in the 94th minute.

Vs Brighton - came on in the 80th minute and held the ball up well.

      Vs Leicester - unused sub

Vs Spurs - on in the 83rd minute and again held the ball up well and won a number of free kicks as a result.

Seems like you are trying to slate him for the sake of it, to fit the narrative of last season. So far he’s had very limited game time but done everything that appears to have been asked of him.

You're smoking better gear than me.
As stated in a scrappy game when adhering to strict positional game set would be as much use as a chocolate hammer, to retain a precious advantage possession and spatial awareness are essential.
That might further contribute to the "scrappy game" description but the win is the priority.

The better quality ganga you have is no doubt responsible for confusing Sturridge and his improved form in previous games with some other player.

Looks excellent and took his goal superbly. Watch him move into space just before the cross, proper poacher

Was a good goal but he fluffed a few other chances, overall a solid performance though.

I know it's been said, but I disagree.

I only saw two other chances - and as far as I have heard, these are the same two cited by many.

      1) He had poor control over the ball that came in and as such had to react and run at the loose ball with the keeper coming to collect. His control was indeed poor - but this happens from time to time to players all over the pitch. That aside, he reacted quickly and crucially got to the ball before the keeper. Salah then popped it into the net. As far as I'm concerned, that goal should have stood. His follow through got the keeper, but the ball is there to be won, it's a goal scoring opportunity, and we've seen them allowed time and time again.

      2) A header. Unlike the first where he threw himself in there at the crucial moment with a great header, this one was a struggle. The ball was actually behind him so he had to adjust his movement, and was unable to get enough on the ball to direct it with power. That was due to there not being enough on the cross. It was not a clear goal scoring opportunity as some have claimed.

That aside, I thought his performance was impressive. Some suggested I was looking for excuses, but I said it before the game that Sturridge will find it more difficult to operate with Mane and Salah given his lack of game time with these two. I was however spot on.

It is a fact that Sturridge plays a very different game to Firmino. Mane and Salah are not used to playing with Sturridge. They are used to the Firmino-player. Tonight you could see that the movement from Sturridge was not getting picked up by the other two, and he was struggling to get into the game at the start. There was also a late opportunity where he attempted to bend it from the edge of the box and it went well wide. Salah and Mane looked mad at him. Don't they know that is his game? He usually tries several of those shots before he gets it right.

Great 1st header for his goal, really should have had 2 but the other one bounced off his shoulder.

Can't believe that was his first ever Champs League start for us.

Great to see Daniel score and shut up his critics. If he can stay fit he will be huge for us this season.

It’s exactly one of the reasons I said we should have kept him for last seasons run in and loaned out Ings instead...got shouted down for that opinion though by one or two people. Whether people like it or not, regardless of his injuries, he’s an out and out goal scorer who’s capable of changing the outcome of a game.
This season so far though, he’s really showing how much he’s improved in terms of his ball retention though; before he’d drop deep to try and run with it but since pre-season he’s showed he can drop deep and pick a pass or hold it up well and win us a free kick when there isn’t much on for him.

The goal scoring and instincts of a striker are still there alas what made him frightening for defenders his pace seems to have complete gone.

He is a clever player though and is great at holding up play, winning free kicks and seems to added a bit to his game by dropping deep and trying to pick out one of the forward players.

If he can stay fit he will score goals in this team as he is still our second best striker.

I'm still amazed at how good his close control is. It's a joy to watch him dance around defenders with the ball. Now when he comes up against a team that will try to beat him up, his game will wane a little bit, needs to be playing against teams that will actually play football and not bully ball.

All that said, thought he did his job well and pressed smartly and defended pretty well when needed. I hope he has a great season and can stay healthy, for his sake even more than ours. He's taken a lot of crap, it would be nice to see him get the chance to show who he feels he should be.

I couldn't agree with this analysis more...
From what I have seen this season Sturrigde plays better when playing with Shaqiri. Their style compliments one another.

That is why i feel is you will not see the best of Sturrigde until he is given a start with Shaqiri, and why also you will not see the best of Shaqiri.

It reminds me of the Berbatov/ Keane partnership for Tottenham, and why when we sign Keane we could not get that same level of play from him...Yes some will say that he play very well for Leeds, but again it was a different style of play...
Look how much our style of play has change under Klopp...

People will put it down to the club being too big for them when maybe it is as simple as they are teamed with the wrong strike partners or have the wrong set of players around them to get the best out of them
