Who should start Vs Zenit on Thursday with no Coutinho or Sturridge available? I would go for Reina GJ Agger Carra Enrique Lucas Gerrard Hendo Downing Suarez Sterling and the 12th Man The Kop......

Suarez is best behind a striker.  However, without Sturridge or Borini we don't have that option.  So, I'd look to play Suso in behind Luis in a 4-4-1-1.  Suso linked well with Suarez in some of the games early in the season, so let them try to build on that understanding.  Have Downing and Hendo playing as inverted outside midfielders.  Leave Sterling on the bench to be used late on as an impact sub and open his legs against tired Zenit defenders.

      Pepe
      Johno  Carra  Agger  Enrique
      Downing  Lucas  Stevie  Hendo
      Suso
      Suarez

Most importantly, we need to be at them from the first whistle and we NEED an early goal!!  A goal in the first 15 minutes will bring the voices out at Anfield, which will spur our players on and put some anxiety and nerves into the Zenit players!!

                               Reina

                   Carra    Skrtel    Agger

      Johnson                                  Enrique

                               Lucas

          Henderson     Gerrard      Sterling

                               Suarez

Subs: Jones, Wisdom, Coates, Allen, Downing, Suso, Assaidi?

I think the key to this game is not to concede and I think this setup would be the best. 5 at the back with Lucas playing anchor, yes I know we're behind but this will keep us compact and also give us threat. Johnson and Enrique need to have the game of their lives tomorrow IMO, need to be like Cafu and Carlos absolutely bombing it down the flanks to defend and attack. I've gone with Henderson over Downing as we need a bit more energy in the middle of the park and he'll naturally drift centrally as he's a CM by trade.

Downing can be used as an impact sub, we have no Borini, Sturridge and Coutinho so we need a player that can come on and try and change the game in an attacking sense if things go wrong and we need 4 goals. Could possibly swap Sterling with Downing but I personally see Sterling pose more of a threat hence why I'd start with him and attack from the off.

Like I said, if Lucas just sits back and mops up in front of the three CBs, whilst Enrique and Johnson attack then we have plenty of options going forward to pose a threat, they need to operate as wingbacks as opposed to fullbacks. If they try to hit us on the counter whilst the wingbacks are out of place, then we still essentially have four at the back if Lucas stays deep with the CBs.

Well that would be my gameplan, here's hoping Brendan has a winning one! Come on Reds!

So far we've had Pepe, Skrtel, Stevie and Lucas all ask for help from the Kop for this game so I hope that everyone at Anfield will answer the call.  If you're going, join in the singing and if the person next to you isn't, tell them to.  There's no point whinging that about the lack of atmosphere if the regulars don't educate the newbies  ;D

As for the game or line up I had suggested yesterday to play Morgan up top in place of Sturridge but he's with the Next.Gen squad so that rules that option out.  If we are going with the usual 3 up front then Stewart and Raheem must help Luis more and get into the box at every opportunity.

Don't like the 3 at the back suggestion, we've tried it a few times this season and it doesn't fill me with confidence, although we had Andre in the 3 on those occasions.

      I'd go with

      Pepe

      Johnson
      Carra
      Agger
      Enrique

      Lucas
      Gerrard
      Henderson

      Sterling
      Suarez
      Downing

Assaidi is back in the squad after an illness so I expect him to be on the bench along with Suso, Jones (if he's fit), Wisdom, Allen, Coates and Shelvey.

Skrtel's injured before anyone questions why he's not listed.

Some squad news I read from tweets from BR's presser: Assaidi will be in the squad and Skrtel is a doubt due to a knock on his knee.

Still trying to work out best strategy for Thurs.

Do we go full on from the outset, or be patient and grind them down. Best analogy of a recent Euro game I can think of is Olympiakos in the CL run in 04/05

Gut feel is we need to keep it tight at the back and not panic

As others have said, I would feel a lot more confident if Sturridge was available. Think we have to be much more aggresive in midfield than we were against them last time, hope Suarez has his shooting boots on and that Gerrard can remember how he used to pull games out of the fire for us once upon a time.

Think we will win, not as sure we will win by enough to go through.

Sterling to replace Sturridge otherwise same team that destroyed Swansea.

From what I've heard from Rushie, Fairclough and Brendan this week it sound like we're going for a keep it tight, don't concede, don't panic or get too desperate for the goal.  They've all said it's not an early goal we need but the first goal.

Apparently our focus against Swansea was for a tight defensive display rather than attack so more of the same will do  ;D

Srktels out so dont trust coates if were going with 3 cbs would go with wisdom if thats the case dont like that though seems to defensive even tho GJ and Enrique provide attack in the wings. Biggest test of our season soo farr and i hope that the 11 out in the field have the desire and passion to win but of course need to stay tight i feel if zenit get one it will be too much for Liverpool to claw back!

Zenit's defence is not all that fantastic in the 1st leg and I think it'll be pretty much the same in the 2ng leg. They do play a very high defence line at times  and we have to capitalise on it fully. BR should get the boys to rehearse, rehearse and rehearse to breach their high defence line. We let them off the hook with some bad misses in front of their goal, hope we can be more clinical with our finishes while we need to put more bodies into their box to ruffle up their defence. Their defence do panic under pressure as much as I've observed. With the 12th man roaring the lads on, I'm sure they'll s**t in their pants.

This is a good point. We were able to get past that line fairly easily, but there is the possibility that they will tighten up and player deeper in order to protect a two-goal lead. We need to be wary of the counter because an away goal will be killer.

      ---

I would put  this team out there:

      Reina
      Carragher     Agger
      Johnson                    Enrique
      Lucas   Gerrard
      Shelvey
      Sterling                     Assaidi
      Suarez

We do need goals, so I would play some of our more direct players like Assaidi and Shelvey. Assaidi's pace vs the Zenit backline could work nicely in our favor if they try to play a high line again. And Jonjo isn't afraid of having a pop at goal, and who knows, maybe he tries a speculative effort, keeper spills it, and Luis puts it home.

I contemplated playing a 1-2 triangle in midfield, but while we do need goals, we need to keep a cleansheet, so opting for the usual 2-1. Lucas will be vital because his presence will free up Gerrard just enough in attack but also help anchor us in defense.

if we adopt a negative defensive 'keep it tight' policy we will lose. It'll take a cock up from our defense and they nip in for 0-1 then we're screwed.

GET AT THEM FROM THE OFF! don't give them time to think, close down, press hard and score 3 goals.

                                                   Reina
                                        Carragher     Agger

                                  Downing                    Enrique
                                                   Suarez

I,ve put Enrique in on the left hand side because i feel he has more strength then Sterling.

Early goal needed... Then it could be a very very special night at Anfield!

The key is not conceding - if we lose 1 we have to score 4 and that's a very big ask - even at 3 - 0 up if they score we could go out on the away goals rule (I do hope I am mistaken though!). Can we win this game, yes! Can we score 3 or 4 - yes! But its all about what they do..! Watching us last weekend we could easily get a few - but this needs to be the perfect storm! Lets hope - I have the same feeling as I did a few years ago against Olympicaos, and before that Bronby!

      Come on you mighty reds!

Im confident we can and will pull this off, but I wont pretend I wouldnt be even more confident with Sturridge involved and Coutinho to.

We have to be alert to them hitting us on the counter. They have good players and Hulk can score from nothing.

After that I think its all about us. If that team go out with hunger and desire roaring through there belly a belief in themselves and each other that they can get the 3 goals I truly believe we will. I wouldnt say go gung ho. If we can score even 1 in the first half Id be happy we'd get the other 2 in the 2nd half. Gung ho could lead to us conceeding 1 or more goals.

I cant underestimate how much the crowd need to play there bit. From about 20 minutes before kick off right through to the end we need an atmosphere to match the best we've seen in the last 20 years.

Team wise we can all guess and predict but I dont really care who plays or what system once every man breaks his balls for that shirt tomorrow. No hiding places on that turf tomorrow night. We need 11 leaders 11 fighters.

      We will win.

      Come on redmen!!

With Sturridge not playing, i'm afraid the players could depend on Suarez alone again to provide the goals. This will not be enough to beat Zenit. The players who they know themselves are capable of scoring goals must attempt to try and those who rarely scores must suddenly find the confidence to try and have a shot. We must bombard the Zenit goal with shots from all possible angles. Hit the ball like it's the last thing you need to do to avoid Brendan having to tell you that you are off the club permanently. Come On Liverpool!

Sorry if I cant lay out a long strategic plan ahead of this game.  My Doberman is getting very aggressive and has bitten quite a few people.  Family contemplating on putting him down.  When he was young raised him like my kid.  Spent an hour in my room as an emotional wreck.  :f_wah:  Hope to take him to the mountain villages and leave him there but i don't have a four wheel just a two wheel.  lets see.

Wile E. Cayote, Spalletti is gonna set up like AC yesterday.  Big Up to Them.  San Siro was off the roof.  Go back to Spain.  Well In AC.  Now Spalletti is gonna make some minor adjustment maybe Hulk not tracking back as far as AL-SHarawaay.  If Suso and Sterling play he will use tactical bullying.  So hope the young un's got a tactical ploy against these bullies.  Suarez will be doubled up when he comes near the danger zone leaving a chink in their armour.  BR needs to get it spot on and not the huff n' puff variety Like barca last Night.  Fire in the Bellies and the desire to play for the red shirt.  Atheleticism, concentration, devotion and with the help of Anfield we can fecking do these Russian Bugger's.
