      Reading sack manager Brian McDermott
A 2-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Aston Villa on Saturday was the club's fourth in a row.

McDermott, who joined the club as chief scout in 2000 before eventually succeeding Brendan Rodgers as manager on a full-time basis in January 2010.

A statement from the club read: "Reading Football Club has announced today the departure of manager Brian McDermott.

"Owner Anton Zingarevich wishes to place on record his thanks to Brian who had achieved great success with the club since taking over as manager in December 2009.

"Brian gained promotion to the Barclays Premier League last year for only the second time in the club's history thanks to a remarkable run at the end of last season. However, in our current situation, owner Anton Zingarevich felt that a change was necessary.

"The search for a successor will start immediately and it is hoped that a new Manager will be in place as soon as possible to lead the fight against potential relegation."

Former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo and ex-Southampton manager Nigel Adkins have emerged as early favourite to take over at the Madejski Stadium.

Another daft decision. They are down the bottom because they haven't got enough good players, not because they've got a bad manager.

Not surprised but he rescued them a few years back after our current manager had them in danger of relegation to league 1. Reading have the poorest squad in the league and bottom place beckons, irrespective of the manager.

Don't like this decision at all, both Reading and Southampton have shown a total lack of respect for the managers that got them to the 'promised land'. Always had them both down as friendly clubs who unless Liverpool are playing them, I like to see them do well. However after how they've treated both McDermott & Adkins I really hope they go back where they came from.

Surely with the investment the board had given McDermott if he kept Reading up on goal difference it would be seen as a massive success for such a club, yet just 4 points adrift and 27 points still to play for they give him the old Spanish archer.

Hope both he and even more so Adkins (who I've a massive respect for), get straight back on the horse and stick two fingers up at the respective chairmen, who deemed them not go enough on the way.

Agree with this and everyone else's sentiments.

Funnily enough it's Adkins one of the favourite's to take the job. Di Canio is odds-on right now, he has said he's ready for the Premier League so we'll see.

That'd suicide to let McDermott go and get Di Canio in. Wolves 2.0.

It’s sad to see managers dismissed so quickly, makes you wonder if we have created a monster in the form of the premiership, with the financial implications of premiership survival being so huge it’s not surprising Managers get the axe without being given a season in the top flight.

Talking of Monsters Di Canio will take no prisoners and isn’t scared to upset the prima dona’s, when he was at Swindon in was always up to something bringing in players to train on Sunday if they didn’t perform on the Saturday, subbing his goalkeeper after 20 minutes for having a mare.

All said and done he got results; he might just be what is needed to keep Reading up.
