Reading to hold minutes silence for Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH SILENCE BEFORE READING – LIVERPOOL GAME

Reading Football Club have confirmed there will be a tribute before the game against Liverpool.

The Royals have issued a statement on their website confirming their plans:

"Supporters of Reading Football Club and Liverpool Football Club will hold a minute's silence before Saturday's fixture at Madejski Stadium as a mark of respect for the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster."

"With the game falling two days before the 24th anniversary of the tragedy, plans began last week for a fitting tribute to the 96 supporters who lost their lives. The Royals contacted Liverpool FC; spoke to the Premier League earlier today and they of course agreed it was absolutely correct to pay respect on such an occasion."

The game at the weekend between Liverpool and West Ham had an impeccably observed silence - it being the last Liverpool home game before the 24th anniversary.

Reading chairman John Madejski had caused some controversy yesterday when suggesting that sport should hold a minutes silence following the death of Margaret Thatcher - however the minutes silence at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday will be to mark the Hillsborough anniversary only.

Fair play to them.  Hope Madejski doesn't try and force in a Maggie mention though.

Exactly, hopefully the travelling fans could turn to clapping if her name is mentioned followed by an immediate 'Justice for the 96' following that.

As others have said, so long as this doesn't get portrayed as a tribute to the witch then it's only right to hold it.

Any mention of the Witch bi*ch should be drowned out with the chants of 'Justice for the 96'.

Good to see it's been confirmed now.

Reading FC will not hold silence for Margaret Thatcher at Liverpool FC match despite chairman Sir John Madejski's wishes.

The only tributes paid prior to Liverpool's Premier League game at Reading on Saturday will be in memory of the 96 who died at Hillsborough.

Royals chairman Sir John Madejski had voiced his desire for a minute's silence to be held for Margaret Thatcher but the Berkshire outfit have confirmed that won't be happening.

The Premier League has not asked clubs to mark the death of the former prime minister and Reading insist they have no plans to do so.

There will be a minute's silence before kick-off at the Madejski Stadium but that will be solely as a mark of respect to the 96 and their families – two days before the 24th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

When the clubs met at Anfield back in October, Reading supporters left flags and scarves at the Hillsborough memorial.

And following the publication of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report, Royals fans stood to salute the playing of You'll Never Walk Alone prior to their home game against Tottenham.

Sorry guys it wasn't meant to be funny, it's a personal thing for me.

This time of year is about honouring and remembering the 96, their families, friends and the survivors.

The last thing I want to be hearing about is what a f**king national hero she is and how she should be remembered/honoured.

A month ago, fine.  After next Monday, fine.  But she had to go and do it this f**king week!!

Call me cynical, but it's a bit coincidental for me.

Madejski wanted a minutes silence for Thatcher, never got it, err, ok how about Hillsborough then.

Sorry but this should be automatic for our games when they fall around the anniversary.

Any way, looks like Whelan will be getting his silence with 10,000 FA Cup semi final tickets unsold.
