I do agree with what instride was saying about corners, we did seem fragile at times when defending corners.

Just think it's an over-reaction screaming for a defensive coach!

As for Lawro hardly uprooted any trees when he was manager at Oxford.

Just need to find the next Hyypia to sort out the set-pieces until then, we just need to be a little better disciplined & organised at set-pieces so Agger & Toure will have to set up to the plate for that as the experienced heads. Papadopolous would be a good acquisition as he attacks the ball...would this be in vain if Rodgers uses zonal marking as not sure what set-up Rodgers gonna use next year?

Has there ever been an actual good defensive coach? Only one really with that title was Mark Lawrenson and he didn't do that good a job!

To be honest, I don't know what the answer is.  I was only stating why I believed many were calling for a defensive coach not that I agreed we should get one.  However, what I do know is that with roughly the same personnel, we did not have these issues with set pieces under Kenny.  So something has changed there and not for the better.  How much of that was Steve Clarke at the time I don't know but we need to get it sorted for us to improve.  What's alarming to me is how our players have seemingly regressed in this area.  It may be that some just need to step up and dig deeper to do a better job in these situations but barring that, it comes down to either a change in personnel, a change in scheme (man vs. zonal) or perhaps a defensive coach to come in and reinforce BR's teachings in this area.  Again, not sure what the right answer is here, but I'm hoping whatever is decided that it works and we are that much better for it!

Liverpool's desire to ensure the young central Sporting, Tiago Ilori, seems to be gaining outlines more concrete than a simple interest. In England (Kick Off) already take for granted the understanding between the player and the emblem of Merseyside, now missing , say, the agreement between the two clubs for the transfer. Harassment of Liverpool Ilori has been persistent and is sure that the center 20 years may, at any time, by changing Alvalade Anfield. The problem is the same value that Englishmen are willing to pay for termination. According to the same information, there are about one million euros of difference between the proposal (4 million) and required by the lion. every indication that Sporting will not budge until recently by the words uttered by Bruno de Carvalho, but the England can play with wear unfair, given that Ilori has a contract until 2015 and there is a risk of losing the player at no cost later

Summary by some guy on twitter : Player agreed terms. 5 mil price, we offered 4.

Liverpool have reportedly almost sealed the transfer of Tiago Ilori, so talkSPORT's Transfer Spotlight has all that excited Kopites need to know about the gifted 20-year-old...
Name: Tiago Abiola Delfim Almeida Ilori
Date of birth: 26 February 1993
      Born: London, England
      Position: Centre-back
      Club: Sporting Lisbon
      International: Four caps for Portugal's U20 side and 15 for Portugal's U19
      What's the latest?
According to reports in Portugal from respected sports newspaper A Bola, Liverpool are close to snapping up highly-rated defender, Tiago Ilori, having apparently already agreed personal terms with the player. He established himself during the second half of last season and the Reds are said to have had a bid of around £3m turned down, with Sporting hoping to get closer to £4m. However, Ilori's contract expires in 2015 and the club face the prospect of losing him for a lot less than Liverpool are prepared to offer.
      Did you know?
      1) Born in London to an English father and Portuguese mother, Ilori joined the Sporting youth academy in 2006. He could still play for the Three Lions just like his Sporting team-mate, Eric Dier, who was born in Cheltenham and plays for the England U19 side. Ilori has so far only represented Portugal at youth level.
      2) Though primarily a centre-back, Ilori can also fill in at left-back. He is known for his speed on the ground, and has even proven to be quicker than Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani in the speed tests conducted at Sporting's academy. He has been mentioned as a long-term successor to Ricardo Carvalho [see 'What's being said' below].
      3) Ilori made his senior Sporting debut in November, 2011 during a league clash with U.D Leiria, and a month later appeared in the Europa League. He continued as part of the B team officially, however.
      4) The arrival of new manager, Jesualdo Ferreira in January 2013 led to a significant boost in Ilori's profile. The youngster was handed a start for the first team against Gil Vicente in February, and scored a goal within six minutes, going on to play the entire game. He played a further 10 games last season, starting in all of them.
      5) The defender has made 15 appearances for Portugal at U19 level and is in the country's U20 World Cup team for the tournament in Turkey beginning on 21 June.
      What's being said?
      They say:
“Ilori was thrown in at the deep end and looked a bit nervous. However, he has got better and better and looks like a classy centre-back, rather than a 'Rambo' type. More Ricardo Carvalho than John Terry, you could say.”
      - Portugal-based journalist, Tom Kundert

      Why?

We need competition to bring out the best in all of the squad. Not so sure I believe talksport though as a reliable source.

Can't see Rodgers keeping five first team centre backs, unless he is being signed as back up to Enrique as he can play LB as well. Either way I don't see both Coates and Skrtel here next season. One will leave.

Had me looking on Abola for 15 minutes looking for the 'original source' but obviously an old link. Nothing new on Abola regarding Ilori to us though as of late in case anyone is interested. Most recent article regarding the player is that Mourinho wants to bring him to Chelsea. If so, we'd be missing out big time on a quality player for cheap.

Echo reporting we're back in for the lad.

"The ECHO understands Liverpool have also renewed their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon centre-back Tiago Ilori.Rodgers was keen to wrap up a deal back in June but talks between the clubs broke down. The Reds had a bid of around £3million rejected with Sporting demanding more than double that amount.

However, Ilori’s refusal to pen a new contract in Portugal has given Liverpool hope that a compromise fee can now be agreed for the 20-year-old.The Reds were represented at Sporting’s game against Arouca yesterday and further discussions were held with the young defender’s representatives."

If we're still in touch with his representatives, wonder if they said earlier on something along the lines of; "Look, take a back seat for a while, Thiago has no plans to sign a new contract, let Sporting sweat it out and come back later on with another offer." Hmmm...

They wanted 6m for him, a valuation we didn't agree with for a player who is yet to be proven. So we waited and now he's apparently refusing to sign a new contract and we feel that strengthens our hand. So we'll probably have a bid accepted with him then Spurs will come in and swipe him from under our noses :P
