      Stewart Downing (West Ham/Newcastle)
      Jul 09, 2013 08:12:10 am
Liverpool have held talks with West Ham United over a possible move for Stewart Downing, as Rodgers continues to remove expensive signings from the club's wage bill. West Ham have followed up their £15m signing of Andy Carroll with an inquiry for his England international colleague, who has entered the final two years of his Anfield contract. That position would impact on Liverpool's negotiating stance and, though no bid has been received for Downing, West Ham would have to pay in excess of £8m to land the 28-year-old winger.

Seems a nice guy, and he got his head up and played OK when he was due to be scrapped.

Just not a threat for me, perfect at WH though

He may well be heading to Fulham as Damien Duff's replacement?

      Hopefully they are both interested.

      A Downing bidding war  ;D

Stranger things have happened, like one of the best strikers in the world getting his £50m dream move to a 'Big Club' and then proceeding to play at a level that made Ade Akinbiyi look world class. :D

To me this seems like a good move all 'round. £8m+ and less wages to pay (no doubt): I wonder how we will use that money to strengthen the team.

If they pay 8 million quid for him we should build a statue of fat Sam and put it in the car park. They won't, it'll be 5 mill and we'll end up having to pay half his wages. Even for that it's a good deal for us.

      First Cole,
      then Carroll,
      now Downing.

They must have been gutted when Adam left for Stoke.

Would be a good move for him. For starters West Ham could do a far better job with Downing than we have of him. He just ain't that type of player for us. Never has been never will be.

And they still finished 'top ten'  ;D

Maybe their ambition only lies 'top seven' and that's why they are buying players who can deliver just that.  :f_tongueincheek:

Nice one Mick, Hahahaha !  i'd settle for £6m without paying them anything, Downing would be ideal for them, mediocre player at a mediocre club, perfeck !

Be very happy to see Downing sold. He stinks of mediocrity and it's a smell becoming all too common at Anfield in recent years.

I'd be surprised if the club could get as much as that for Downing, i would expect a transfer fee more inline with the £6 million we got for Shelvey. I know there would likely be a few cheers if he is moved on but to be fair to the lad he didn't have a bad season last year and was a pretty consistent performer from Christmas onwards in my book. It was generally 7 out of 10 stuff but Henderson has earned a lot of praise in here from numerous posters for similar performances!
