Hillsborough families' anger over new prosecutions chief
Hillsborough campaigners have said it is an "absolute disgrace" that a lawyer who said a new inquest was not needed has been appointed Director of Public Prosecutions.

They want to meet Alison Saunders, who advised against a new inquest in 1996.

Ms Saunders will decide who should be prosecuted as part of the fresh police investigation launched by the Home Secretary at the end of last year.

Ninety-five people died on 15 April 1989 at the football stadium.

The 96th victim died four years later when the Law Lords permitted tube-feeding to be stopped on a coma patient.

Ms Saunders rejected the application for a fresh inquest into the death of Kevin Williams, 15, while an Attorney General Office advisor to the solicitor general.

Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group representing the interests of around 70 affected families, has demanded to meet Ms Saunders to confirm if she "still holds the same opinions".

"I would like to meet her," she said. "I want to know does her opinion still stand to this day. If it does not still stand - what made her change her mind and why?"

She added: "It's an absolute disgrace she has been appointed as DPP - how is that justice for the 96?"

      'Unnecessary inquest'
Kevin Williams' mother Anne campaigned for a fresh inquest into her son's death before she died from cancer in April.

Mrs Williams disputed the coroner's findings that all of the victims had died by 15:15 and put forward evidence that her own son was alive after the coroner's "cut off" time.

Within documents compiled by the Hillsborough Independent Panel, a report from Ms Saunders concluded that on the "basis of the new evidence put forward" by Kevin's relatives "there is nothing which makes a fresh inquest necessary or in the interests of justice".

A Crown Prosecution Service spokeswoman said: "The CPS has made it clear that it intends to have on going contact with the bereaved families and their representatives, in order to ensure they remain fully informed and that any views they have can be listened to."

An investigation by the Hillsborough Independent Panel showed police and emergency services had made "strenuous attempts" to deflect the blame for the disaster onto the fans.

Inquests into the deaths of the 96 victims are set to begin by 31 March at an unconfirmed location in the North West.

Verdicts of accidental death from the original inquest in March 1991 were quashed by the High Court last December.

Ms Saunders takes up her post in November.

Looks like it's the same Old Boys Network has raised it's ugly head.

Unbiased leader it would seem not.

It's quite amazing how many of those involved are now in very high positions.

I guess it's quite difficult for the establishment to select unbiased candidates without them (the establishment) being taken to employment tribunals for "overlooking them in favour of a less qualified person".

I think they will have  a lot more thrown at them before they get anywhere near justice. It is a very sad way to treat people who only want the truth.

The establishment strategy is exposed once again.
The conspirators are elevated to positions that make questioning their authority and conduct increasingly difficult and time consuming.
The F***ing liar Sir Norman Bettison being the perfect example.

This F***ing stinks as bad as any other government insult to the families.
It is surely no coincidence this is the bi*ch who refused a new inquest for 15 year old Kevin Williams in 1996, his mother Anne campaigned until her tragic death of course in April successfully to have that decision overturned.
In spite of the F***ing liar Cameron's assurances they still try to delay the inevitable, the appointment of Alison Saunders as DPP confirms that the establishment are still intent on avoiding blame for the tragedy.

This is all very sinister. Pretty much the whole episode is a damage limitation exercise for the establishment - that's how those in power see it. What a F***ing farce, this really should be highlighted strenuously to make sure no subtle moves are being made to differ the real outcome.

It makes me worried sick that people like this are running the country.

      H'BORO LAWER WILL STEP DOWN
      Questions over appointment

A second top prosecutor is to step aside from making key decisions on possible charges over the Hillsborough disaster - to avoid a conflict of interest.
Last month the new director of Public Prosecutions, Alison Saunders stood down from the criminal investigation entirely, after her appointment came under fire from campaign groups. Her appointment was deemed inappropriate after it emerged that she rejected calls for a new inquest in 1996.
The original inquests of course were subsequently quashed and new investigations ordered since the publication of last years Hillsborough Independant Panel report.
Peter Lewis, chief executive of the CPS was appointed in her stead.

But Mr Lewis has now decided to delegate decisions on whether West Midlands Police should face prosecution - although he will remain the overall decision maker for the investigation. He is stepping aside as he used to work as a prosecutor in the West Midlands.
The families had voiced their concerns concerning Mr. Lewis' past at a meeting with current DPP Keir Starmer and member. of the investigation team.
Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the Hillsborough Families Support Group said ''it pleases us to know that he won't be making any decisions over West Midlands Police, because of the role he had played in the past''.
''That was our main concern when we found out and it's nice to know we are being listened to''.
She added '' if they had done their job properly they would have checked everybody before giving them that position, it's ridiculous that we have to keep doing it for them''.

If the families' legal team had not pointed out these discrepancies and the procedings did eventually get under way, how much delay further down the road would that have caused?
      A possible retrial?
Method in the madness I hear you say.

Stuey it's no surprise that the people who have risen to the top over the last 24 years have had some
connection to previous Hillsborough investigations.  As far as the establishment were concerned everyone involved, apart from the fans and survivors, came out of it with great credit and therefore rightly deserved any promotions offered.

It still hasn't dawned on them that we don't trust any of them and will thoroughly vet any appointment before accepting they will do their job properly.

As implied Debs the devious bas**rds are intent on laying irregularities in procedure into the legal framework of the case, it will not withstand scrutiny as displayed and if it were not for the sterling work of the HFSG there would be more unwanted delay at possibly a crucial point in the proceedings.
Anyone with any basic understanding of the law would be onto the conflicting interests in both cases, much less a professional charged with examining the credibility of a legal team.
The HFSG legal eagles have the measure of them.

A bit like some of us attaining a decent level of accountancy skills during the H&G saga, I'm sure the families are well versed with legal matters.  Like us they've had to due to the s**t load of c**p they've been exposed to over the years.

Fair play to them, they've dedicated their lives to fighting for justice and now it's closer than it's ever been they're not going to let them somehow wriggle out of facing the consequences.  I hope they all rot in hell for their lies and deceit.
