Buy a CB, LB, LMF & RMF and we would have strenghtened the team considerably.

Before we all get carried away with all this transfer speculation / who would you buy talk - let's just think for a moment.

The players who we will be linked with will be :-
      either youngsters
players from teams not in the Champs League
      mainly understudies for our team

      Forwards.
I would personally, sell Crouch in January and not buy a forward till the end of the season.
      Why -
We could demand a half decent transfer for him - 18 month left on contract.
We have 3 strikers who would benefit from playing more regularly.
We have Babel who could play up front if needed / required.
We could then be in the market for another world class forward for next season. Personnally I would go for Eto'o again. (No chance in January)
We could then pair Torres / Voronin & Eto'o / Kuyt.  A class finisher with a work horse / provider.

      Midfield.
Tie up Mascherano's contract. - A must !! as he can start to talk to other teams from January.
I think a definate purchace will be Michael Johnson from Man. City.
Rafa likes him, and he could be a ready made Liverpool player. Expect a deal done with Crouch.
We are crying out for a world class wide man.
Names being mentioned - Quaresma (will still be in Champs League), Bresciano (no better than what we've got) & Mancini (await Roma's Champs League status)

      Defence.
We need a covering centre back.
Forget Richards from Man City - just signed a new deal & would expect first team football.
Possible for me is Vincent Kompany - plays for SV Hamburg.
Rafa likes players who can play cover in different positions, so possible to expect the unexpected on this.
He may sign a proven full back who can cover centre back, or visa versa.
I have a feeling this could be Mendy, but like somebody has already mentioned - Heinze ??

Agree with Tommo on this! And I echo Oldreds thoughts about a centreback being top priority.

I think the most important bit of business in January is making sure Mascherano is going nowhere. Then I'd like us to focus on a defender. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if we went in for Heinze again. Even if he's cup tied for the European Cup he'd still be important for the league. But whether we'd be able to do business with Real is another subject.

Agree completely.Eto'o is  a world class striker with a brilliant work- rate as you've stated.Michael Johnson reminds me of a young Stevie g,attacking, goal scorer, good range of passes and a good positional sense. So I say City here take crouch but give us johnson because I feel he'll be some player in the future.I recall there was rumours linking him to liverpool in the summer.

As defenders go I'm not sure we're going to splash the cash so just someone decent with a bit of pace will do till the likes of Hobbs , San jose and Carra Jr. ;) make the step up.

Personally I don't think we need to sign to many players. I'd go for Nicky Shorey, I think he is a class player who doesn't get himself in the headlines, LB is a weak position for us at the moment I think, Aurelio is a bit injury prone, Riise just isn't good enough. And he would fit in well with us, not afraid to get stuck in, and is semi-decent when going forward, I think he can also play CB as well as LB, but I'm not to sure on that though. I think we could get him for £6 - £8 mill.

Another position we strengthening I think is LW, but I can't really think of any LW who we could get at the moment, I've never seen the Bresiano feller play. I want to see Babel given a run there but we still need some cover for the position, we can't rely on Kewell getting fit can we.

Well the topic is who would you like, my answer is Quaresma or Menez but that will not happen, the most likey thing is that rafa will go after some more starlets and ship out some players also

What's Petrov at Man City's situation like?....wouldn't mind seeing him flying down our left wing with Babel on the right.

RE : Quaresma:    "we need a player who will do the unexpected or who isn't afraid to take on 3 defenders at a time"

He is exactly the kind of player we do need on the right! I also believe that JP is underated but think the little Ricky would be agreat acquisition.....so lets hope for some hefty Porto defeats!!

Also believe a sturdy, tall utility defender is a must....poeple keep haping on about Kompany but think that  his reputation is more fiction that fact.....Mellberg is a better option as a back up.

Tie up the Masch situation is a necessity.

Crouchie is going I think which is sad as he has been great at times though too often frustrating......would like an older campaigner for the duration of the season who knows his role and wants to prove he still has it as competition and egos won't stand a younger pro coming in......Owen? God...thats a tough one.....heart and head are in turmoil.....saying all that......and I was the FIRST to say this last year I'd love to push the boat out and get Dean Ashton.....yes it goes against what I said earlier but he'd be a great buy......strong in the air (unlike PC), great touch(like PC), team before individual and proven in the prem....plus he is hungry for action at a PROPER club....

Has to be Quaresma for me. A central defender, don't know who to suggest there, and Sami for a defensive coaching job.

Jesus Navas from Sevilla. Young, pacy, trick and beats his defender. Cheaper than Quaresma too and more likely to sign as he has less hype about him but just as good IMO.

Good shout mate, I wouldn't quite say just as good, but almost as good & there would be a massive difference in price, which would free up money to strengthen other areas.

You only have to look at the boards to see how popular he is. Navas is relatively un heard of by some. He is 3 years the younger of Quaresma too and is Spanish so i guess he will cross the mind of Rafa once or twice during January (No disrespect but Rafa seems to get most of his players from there lately)

Spanish players are not all that, we need a player who can play on the left. Quaresma is a hell of a lot better than Navas. Better skills, crossing, shooting and causes more panic to the opposistion.

IMO Navas is another Hleb/Rosicky... good but not good enough!

I think this is a bit of a myth spread by the media TBH. Look at Rafa's major signings (not including kids) this summer:

      Torres (Spanish)
      Babel (Dutch)
      Benayoun (Israeli)
      Voronin (Ukranian)
      Itandje (French)
      Leiva (Brazilian)

      And last season:

      Bellamy (Welsh)
      Kuyt (Dutch)
      Mascherano (Argentinian)
      Arbeloa (Spanish)
      Pennant (English)
      Paletta (Argentinian)
      Aurelio (Brazilian)

Apart from the two Spaniards, Aurelio was the only other player to come from La Liga as well, hardly the 'Spanish Armada' the press would have you believe.

Why would you want Navas at Liverpool? He suffers from acute anxiety attacks every time he steps foot out of Sevilla. It's why he can't break in and keep his place in the Spanish squad, and also why Sevilla has told him to deal with his problem before they can offer him a new contract as he was having problems travelling with them during pre-season. He has huge problems and I can't see him transferring outside Spain anytime soon or any club wanting him when he still has these problems. He's even worse than Reyes when it comes to dealing with survivng outside Spain and that's saying something.
