Surprised to see Joe Allen starting.  I think think Brendan is having second thoughts about Joe.  It could turn out that Brendan is using todays game to suss out Joe Allen.  If he does'nt measure up today I think he'll be gone in the summer.

I don't think he would do that in a derby :D

Special mention to Roy Hodgson for playing Sturridge for the full 90 minutes in that pointless friendly.

Wow, just saw the starting XI and really surprised to see Flanno and Allen there. Sturridge is on the bench but assuming he's not 100% or he'd be starting. Am not sure but looks like we're setup to retain possession as far as possible and hope Couts and Suarez can do something special, which they are capable of. Big one for Flanno given lack of games, but he might be OK in a flat back four, where there's not as much emphasis on bombing forward (compared with FB in 5 backs). Big calls from BR, let's hope the lads put in a good shift.

This is bullsh*t. Sturridge played one game in the international break and that was a home game 4 days ago so wtf! Why is Flanagan back in our lineup?

I hope he does.  I'd use every opportunity to test the players including Allen.  If he's not good enough in a big game i'd show him the exit door quick pronto and I would'nt wait until summer.  We have a lot of catching up to do before we can overtake and I hope Brendan feels the same. Part of catching up is getting shot of inferior players.

Sturridge and Enrique missing out is a huge loss.

It does give us an insight into Brendan's opinion of Cissokho though. Maybe more surprising is that Kelly doesn't even make the bench?!

      Assuming it's a 4231 like this:

      Flanno    Skrtel    Agger    Johnson
               Gerrard     Lucas
          Henderson Allen Coutinho
                       Suarez

Then I expect absolutely nothing to develop creatively down our right hand side, thankfully though our left hand side should compensate somewhat. Would love to see one of the midfielders chip in with a goal from open play, any of them I don't really care who.

With these changes I see a tougher game than I first thought and I'll be delighted if we can get the 3 points in any fashion at all.

Come on redmen, let's smash 'em!!!

Because he cared so much about the friendly game we lost anyway,  I like many fans stopped watching when Germany scored. Same old cr*p again. Tbh, Sturridge didn't look very good when playing for England last Tuesday.  I don't think he was even fit for that game imho.

Phil Thompson raising a fair point on Sky there, surprising that Toure isn't at RB.

I like this team, I think Coutinho will be high up the pitch causing havoc.

If Allen helps us keep possession then I think this could be a master stroke.

Flanagan is a slight concern after the arsenal performance but I bet he understands how intense a derby can be so he's got the nod.

I am dreaming of a 40 yard screamer from Gerrard.

Don't mean to curse the lad but he's one who could quite easily boil over in the intensity. Although I don't expect nearly as physical a game against them under Martinez, but it's the derby so a lot of those thoughts simply go out of the window.

Flanagan didn't put a foot wrong against Arsenal.

I don't rate the lad and I have no idea how he'll hold up today but you have to give credit where it's due, he did a great job in a pinch at Arsenal, he deserves no blame for the loss at all.

Interesting though that he has decided to avoid 5 at the back - I think that is the right thing. We shouldn't get overrun in midfield this time.

Flanno shouldn't be questioned. At least not in his commitment which on occasions like today, can be enough. He's going to be roaring to go for this, and I'm willing to bet he makes the first hard challenge to really lift the team.

Fully behind him. Allen. All the lads. Cmon!

So it's a front three with Henderson on the right?

      really?

Henderson vs. Baines, I'm sure he's quaking in his boots.

      ffs.

Was surprised to see Flanno at left back today. not due to his ability but more his lack of games for such an intense match. Allen as well in the middle. Not the strongest physically for this sort of game. Does keep possession well, just hope he manages to get the ball forward a little more.
I assume we have a relatively strong bench as well.  Bitters no pushovers I think, especially in a derby, but still going for a win to us. 2 - 0 I reckon.

Can't say I'm too pleased about the team. Lucas, Gerrard and Allen could end up being a mess in midfield especially if Allen plays furthest up. Worried about the lack of width in the team as well considering Flanagan won't be providing much down that left.

Same here, not sure how all 4 CM's will fit in to be honest. Not confident about Flanno either, especially if he's on the left then it could be a long afternoon for him
