Once the opponents pack the bus, we run out of ideas on out to break their defence.

Hull City v Liverpool: match report

      10:00PM GMT 01 Dec 2013

The admission from Brendan Rodgers was as startling as the ineptitude of Liverpool’s performance against Hull City.

â€œThere’s no doubt our quality in our squad, with all due respect, isn’t big enough to cope with two players like that [Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge] missing,” he said after watching his side lose 3-1.

Two, just two, players are forced out – Coutinho started on the bench – and it all becomes rather too much like pre-January 2013 for Liverpool.

It has taken a bit longer than usual, but yet again the club will head into a transfer window amid a clamour for new recruits.

The inference from Rodgers cannot be brushed aside. The club’s much lauded transfer committee spent £50 million on eight players last summer. Here they are again, still a couple of recruits from looking capable of a Champions League return and a few injuries from being thrust into what has become an annual scrap to finish above seventh.

Hull City took advantage of Rodgers’s need to utilise the fullness of his squad, not just deserving their victory, but raising deeper questions as to whether Liverpool’s decent start to the campaign is about to unravel.

It may seem harsh given that Liverpool were second at the start of the day, but the hints were there prior to Jake Livermore, David Meyler and a Martin Skrtel own goal inflicting this damage.

For the Merseyside club, this may have been only their third defeat of the season, but the last time they won away from home (at Sunderland in September) their opponents did not have a manager. Poor at Newcastle, hammered at Arsenal and fortunate a week ago at Goodison Park, they were dire at the KC Stadium. The sense of foreboding was apparent as soon as the team sheet was printed.

You will recall those dark days on Merseyside at the start of last season, the club languishing in mid-table, applying the doctrine of possession football but ultimately relying on a second of individual brilliance, usually from Luis Suarez, to win a game or take a point.

It began to change when Sturridge and Coutinho signed, two signings having that rare effect of being instantly impressive upon walking through the Shankly Gates.

Here – and much credit must go to the vastly underrated Steve Bruce for the superb exposing of Liverpool’s weaknesses – we witnessed why they have become as critical as Suarez.
Their replacements have shown nothing to suggest they can fill the void.

Victor Moses and Raheem Sterling should have relished an opportunity to prove the last few months of bench duty was a waste of their talent.

Sterling continues to struggle to justify the hype that elevated him to an England call-up. Yes, he is a teenager, but for those with memories of Fowler, Owen and Gerrard at the same age, the months of haggling over his contract last season look preposterously premature.

Moses, meanwhile, was quoted suggesting that his lack of action was stopping him accumulating a target of 20 goals this season. He was voted Nigeria’s Player of the Year this week. The runner-up in that poll must have had a shocking dip in form. All Moses’s performance achieved was confirmation when Chelsea start sending players on loan, Everton are getting the better deals.

It was Moses’s lethargic flick on 16 minutes that enabled Livermore to give Hull the lead. There was some fortune as it deflected off Skrtel beyond Mignolet, but Liverpool could hardly bemoan their luck.

They equalised 11 minutes later because they have become something of set-piece specialists in the last fortnight. Curtis Davies tripped Jordan Henderson, who was playing in an advanced midfield role, and Steven Gerrard stepped up to place the kick beyond Allan McGregor.

Hull simply regrouped, denying Liverpool any space and countering dangerously.
Tom Huddlestone’s elegant display was a reminder to Liverpool it is possible to sign midfielders who can pass more than six yards with both feet.

Bruce ordered his side to allow the visitors possession in their own half with the confidence they were not threatening to do much with it, but when called upon to defend Liverpool were pedestrian. Meyler shot across Mignolet to restore the lead on 72 minutes, and Skrtel ensured there would be no anxious finale, heading into his own net with four minutes left.

Liverpool looked shambolic in the closing stages, and face a daunting Christmas period.

“It’s an understatement to say it was disappointing,” Rodgers said. “We lacked quality with the ball. We never created enough or kept the ball long enough to move them about.”

Hull City’s supporters began the day planning a demonstration against their owner’s name change, but ended it feeling like they had finally arrived in the Premier League.

I knew we were in a bit of trouble when they started getting rowdy at the 19 minute mark. The commentator was saying some sh*t about how that's their protest against the owner for wanting to change their name and they do that at all games at the 19 minute mark. Lo and F***ing behold they score in the 19th minute. Bet they haven't done that all seson so of course they had to do it against us!!!

Credit where its due - fat head got this one right...

Park the bus at home, get all men behind the ball when not is possession and play on the counter. Make sure every counter attack ends with a shot and hope you convert a few chances.

We were unable to break down their defence and their midfield did a number on us with pressure and passion. I cant remeber the amount of times we 'gave the ball away' to Hull. It was a truly shocking afternoon, however every team will suffer at least one or two more setbacks this season.

We look very lost against these teams - I saw this against Villa last season and we really have not grown as a team. We need to find a way to break teams down, or adapt during games. On this ocassions however, I think our players need to look at the game again, they simply didnt turn up and it looked like they couldnt be arsed expecting Hull to simply roll over for them.

Poor performance and a bit of a disaster at the back but I wont be too critical. With the exception of arsenal,  other teams have all dropped points as well against "lesser" opponents.

Atleast rodgers is honest enough to admit the squad doesn't have enough quality( this could probably be applied more to midfield and strike options). A third top quality striker is required.

Brendan needs to careful blaming the squad depth - he's spent a lot of money. He picked the team - dropping Agger was a big call because I reckon Skrtel plays better with Agger alongside him. Don't want him to end up sounding like Benitez - blaming everyone but himself.

On paper the squad isn't great but not that terrible either. But we have some problems with it - the young lads who were coming through have gone backwards (Wisdom, Sterling), Gerrard is fading, some poor signings (Borini, Allen), some palyers who haven't started to play yet (Sakho) and some players who remain simply not good enough (Lucas, Aspas, Enrique)

Also for a team that plays a so-called defensive midfielder (in other words a limited CM) we concede reguarly, look fragile and also disorganised at the back. Their midfeild was allowed to come onto to us (like at Arsenal and Everton) - the two Tottenham lads (Livermore and Huddlestone) had easy days at the office.

Don't even want to think about this result ever again.

The management fu**ed up with selections & tactics and the players even more so. They bottled it when the pressure was on. We had to win there yesterday and they turn in that sort of performance. Embarrassing.

What a horrifically sh*t display. Again our lack of defensive organisation and midfield guile and power has cost us dearly.

Mignolet (5). Isn't organising his defence and his usual frailties - distribution and dealing with set pieces - cost us again. He's a very good, old-fashioned shot-stopper. That's not enough.

Skrtel (3). Horrible display after a good run of form. Culpable for two goals

Toure (5). He's no Jamie Carragher. Lacked authority and leadership

Johnson (4). Poor. Didn't attack effectively and made too many basic mistakes. Needs to do better, as he is capable of much more than this.

Flanagan (6). Another decent display, but we badly miss Enrique.

Lucas (4). Typical Lucas display: stayed back, a few interceptions, niggly fouls and totally out of condition so that after 60 minutes, he's almost entirely useless.

Gerrard (6). Pretty ordinary, extra point for the goal. Our only threat from midfield.

      Moses (3). F**k off.

Sterling (4). Needs to stop having children and start concentarting on his game. Which at the moment is non-existant.

Henderson (4). He runs a lot. He does almost nothing else.

Suarez (5). Looked a bit tired and had no support. He will be off as soon as he can, because he deserves better.

Rodgers (4). Wrong team, poor squad, terrible lack of activity to make a positive change. Struggling.

Wow! Skrtel gets the most votes on the MOTM poll. Now nothing surprises me anymore.

I didn't personally vote for him, but he was my second best choice.  Thought he had a good game. Actually - I think he's had a decent season.  Must be hard playing without a midfield in front of you.

January can't come quick enough for me.
We desperately need a new midfield.

Seems like our entire game, this season,
is built around the attacking threat of Suarez, Sturridge & Coutinho.
Once that unit loses a piece the rest of our team gets exposed
for the average components it's made up of.

Barring Mignolet, we've not seen the summer signings step up.
Both loans now look a complete waste.

The team needs to find some fight or December will be a F***ing nightmare.

      Quote from JD
Only small crumb of comfort is that there is a game in 3 days time.

Fact is that our team isn't Champions League quality, neither is our squad and when United get into their groove we will be fighting for Europa League scraps with Newcastle, Spurs and Everton.

When will they get into the groove? The league is still waiting for them. Thankfully they now have a mediocre, mid-table coach who drops points at teams they would have beaten in their sleep not long ago.

We had a poor game. However, we have a fine home record this year, and after we see off the opposition over the coming week, we'll be back in contention again. Then we have to get a decent haul of points from Spurs, City, and Chelsea. After that, we'll be ready to put this result right.
