Liverpool close in on transfer for MK Dons' Dele Alli after Brendan Rodgers keeps tabs on starlet

“You don’t see many 17-year-olds playing in an FA Cup third round against a very good Wigan side and not looking out of place," says Dons boss Karl Robinson
Watching brief: Brendan Rodgers saw Alli's MK Dons side take on Wigan
Liverpool are closing in on the signature of MK Dons starlet Dele Alli.

Anfield chief Brendan Rodgers made a personal check on the youngster during the League One side’s FA Cup draw at Wigan on Saturday.

The England Under-17 midfielder is regarded as a “special” talent by Dons boss Karl Robinson, who admitted he has spoken to Rodgers about some of his prized assets.

Robinson revealed: “I know Brendan quite well and we speak about different players all the time.

“There may have been another reason why he was at the game today, but you’ve seen Dele and he’s special. Yeah, he did some silly things but he’s 17 years of age. He did bits of magic too.

“You don’t see many 17-year-olds playing in an FA Cup third round against a very good Wigan side and not looking out of place.

“I’m very proud of his development.”

Who's better Hughes or Alli? Both are decent players to me, young and hungry. Be happy with either of them, if Rodgers was at the MK Dons game must mean he's taking the Alli interest seriously.

These two bits make me think maybe it wasn't Dele Alli he went to look at.

Or maybe I'm reading way too much into it.

I'm not expert on the lower leagues but between the two right now I'd be comfortable putting my money on Hughes.

      I love this quote.

To be fair, no, I haven't seen many players who are:

      a) Aged 17
      and
      b) Playing in the 3rd round of the FA Cup
      and
      c) Playing against Wigan specifically
      and
      d) That Wigan side being a particularly good one
      and
      e) The player not looking "out of place".

      He has a point

Over the last 6 or 7 years since the Rafa days we have been linked with lots and lots of talented teenagers who people quickly post to tell us they are the new this or the new that and throw up a few youtube clips to tease us. We then sign a good lot of those players and the easily excited amongst us think "oh were going to be a cracking side in 5 years when all these lads come through"

How many have come through and from that list how many have played more then 10 games and from that lot how many are still here?

Couldn't care less if we sign any 17 year old, wonderkid or not, because chances are they wont make a slight bit of difference to the first team now, next year or in 5 years
