His grandson followed in his cherished foot steps by having played a big role for Motherwell for a few seasons.

Clearly a big inspiration and a great loss.

      RIP Tony Hateley

      R.I.P. Tony Hateley

I never got to see Tony play for Liverpool, he was sold a couple of weeks before my first game at Anfield, but I saw him a few times on TV and he was a fantastic header of the ball. Scored a lot of goals for us too in his short time here.

It is sad to hear about Tony Hateley,he was indeed a great  centre forward as we called them in old money,he scored 17 goals in 42 games for us. It was a surprise at the time when Bill Shankly sold him to Coventry after only 1 season but I believe there was problems behind the scenes. i came across this in a programme from the 26 December 1966 when we were playing Chelsea at Anfield(we won 2-1 thanks Roger Hunt) and Tony was in the Chelsea team that day=Tony Hateley another newcomer signed
from Aston Villa for a record fee for a centre forward. He was top scorer for Villa for 3 seasons
       R.I.P.Tony you were a goodin.

      RIP Tony Hateley

As Billy said earlier there was some bewilderment at the time when Tony was sold after only one season when Mr Shankly had bought him for a then record club fee.
We can only wonder but what we do know is the man kicked on well in the short time he was here, that in itself is possibly an appropriate epitaph.

A decent 'centre forward' in his time, yet my fondest memories of him are charging down the right wing. Strange the bits that get permanently logged in your memory aint it !
Still, gave us good service in his time with us, R.I.P. Tony.
