Everton plan Hillsborough memorial at Goodison Park

Everton Football Club are planning to have a permanent Hillsborough memorial at their stadium to remember the 96 Liverpool fans who died in the tragedy.

The club said they had a "commitment" to unveil the Goodison Park memorial for the 25th anniversary next month.

Talks have been held for a number of months with an Everton fan whose brother died during the 15 April 1989 disaster, a club spokesman said.

Fresh inquests into the deaths will begin in Warrington on Monday.

Mark Rowan, head of media at the club, said: "Evertonians and the club have always stood shoulder to shoulder with the families of the Hillsborough victims during their long fight for justice and we feel it is fitting that our home should have a permanent tribute to the 96."

The supporters were crushed during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium.

Original accidental death inquest verdicts were quashed in 2012 following an independent report.

Following the report's publication, Liverpool's rivals paid tribute to the Hillsborough families ahead of a match at Goodison Park.

Such respect makes it impossible to hate Everton.

Bitter rivals but respect there - couldn't happen in any other city.

Everton FC to unveil tribute to Hillsborough 96 ahead of Merseyside derby

Everton FC will honour the 96 football fans who died at Hillsborough with a commemorative plaque at Goodison Park.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, will officially unveil the new memorial ahead of the Merseyside derby game between Everton and Liverpool on Saturday.

The plaque will serve as a permanent tribute to the victims and their families.

The unveiling will take place before the 5.30pm kick-off of the 224th Merseyside derby match.

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, which will be attended by members of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, Ms Aspinall said: “This is a really lovely gesture from Everton, paying tribute to the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough.

“I would like to thank Bill and everyone involved, not least the Everton fans who have provided great support to the families over the years.”

The permanent tribute had been suggested to the club by supporters and Everton fan Stephen Kelly, whose brother Michael died at Hillsborough in April 1989.

He said: “As an Evertonian who lost my brother at Hillsborough, I have always been grateful of the support from the blue side of the city. I hope that when Evertonians look at this they will feel proud of the way we’ve supported our neighbours.”

Mr Kenwright paid his own tribute in front of the Kop in 2013 and when manager Roberto Martinez spoke emotionally on the 25th anniversary last year at Anfield he emphasised how “Everton remembers - we always will”.

Nice gesture from our neighbours but I agree with Billy (DLS), where was their support for the last 25 years?

They weren't so keen to pin their colours to our banner whilst the rest of the world believed the lies.  They were quite happy to let the Red half of Merseyside take the tagline of murderers for a quarter of a century but now want to stand shoulder to shoulder with us.

F***ing cowards the lot of them!!
