If we are going to try and win I would go for:

      GK: Hart
      RB: Johnson
      LB: Baines
      CB: Cahill
      CB: Jagielka
      CM: Gerrard
      CM: Henderson
      CAM: Barkley
      LAM: Sterling
      RAM: Lallana
      ST: Sturridge

      Prediction: 1-1

Wouldn't play Welbeck or Rooney - not due to injury concerns - but due to sh*te-ness concerns.

Can't really argue with the team you have picked although there would be absolutely enormous pressure on Barkley's shoulders there.

1-1 if Italy start with the loon Balotelli, the Azzuri play Insigne and Immobile can see them winning 2 or 3-1. They looked superb together the other night in Italy's friendly against Fluminese.

That seems to be about the best team and I think Barkley's ready to step up to the plate, I so wish we could buy him.

11pm KO! Yikes, OK for the majority, but soft lad is in work at 7.30am on Sunday morning.

That pitch looks dreadful, slightly better that the old Baseball ground on a cold wintery Saturday afternoon.

If we play typical Hodgson football we won't have to worry about the pitch. Just keep the ball in the air.... where's Andy Carroll when you need him :)

I think we will win this game comfortably even if we keep the ball on the floor. Going for a 2-0 win Sturridge to get both. Rooney to start and play well.

I think we'll see a lot of passing the ball along the back 4 along with Gerrard. Given the much talked about conditions I'd be surprised if this match is anything but a scrappy, slow affair. It should have 0-0 written all over it but considering both sides have potent strikers in Balotelli and Sturridge then you never know.

I'm optimistic, Italy aren't the scary force that they were a few years ago.

      Hart
      Johnson
      Cahill
      Jagielka
      Baines
      Henderson
      Gerrard
      Lallana
      Sterling
      Rooney
      Sturridge

That's what I think Hodgson will play.

      2-1

I certainly wouldn't be surprised. Then again I would see it as a tactical ploy to stretch the game and keep it tight for an hour and then when the opposition are tired bring on Sterling for full force because if there's one man who could change the whole game for England through sheer individual skill, it's going to be Raheem Sterling. Then again you are having to bank on it being 0-0 which is a fairly presumptuous and naive tactical plan. There's no room for ifs and buts so I see no solid reason why Roy wouldn't start Raheem.

I'm astonished that someone had a time machine, went back to the eighties and out of all the football players in the world they brought welbeck back.

      Word.

As for the match, 1-1 score bore. ingerland to score first and then shut up shop for 60 minutes.

Welbeck over Lallana. This has to be some kind of sick f**king joke.

The problem with Welbeck isn't his work rate - that side of his game is genuinely good. It's his intelligence on the ball which isn't great. Numerous times in the three friendlies played prior to tonight he picked the ball up and ran with it into an opposition defender. He can't do that tonight otherwise he will get murdered by all in the stadium and on social media. I can understand Roy's approach to this game and it's much better to have Lallana as an insurance policy from the bench than having Welbeck. Given the conditions of this game it's important that an impact player is on there.

I'm really wanting to see our Redmen do great tonight so I'm very keen for England to do well at this tournament and I feel it should be in the best manners of all us Liverpool fans to wish the best for them. And I say that as a Scot.

I think we Roy has made a mistake in losing the extra central midfield player especially against a team like Italy. I think we may see Gerrard run ragged in this game.

A certain Gabriel Paletta is playing for Italy tonight. Remember he was the young Argentinian who Rafa bought back in 2006? Seem to recall only one game of his - the league cup tie against Arsenal at Anfield in January 2007 when they thrashed us 6-3 (Baptista scoring 4). Paletta had a shocker especially under the high ball. He was all over the place. Tim Vickery the BBC South American Football Correspondent said his move to Liverpool came to early in his career so it will be fascinating to see how much he has progressed tonight.

      Diego the teams are...

England: Hart, Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines, Gerrard, Henderson, Welbeck, Sterling, Rooney, Sturridge.

Italy: Sirigu, Darmian, Paletta, Barzagli, Chiellini, De Rossi, Pirlo, Verratti, Marchisio, Candreva, Balotelli.

Thanks. I quite liked England's lineup, with the exception of Welbeck's inclusion of course. I'd switch him for a midfielder, Wilshere or maybe Barkley.

Hopefully Roy won't try to make them play long ball football though.
