Don't agree with the notion that Markovic was terrible at right wing back either. I thought he was a tremendously hard worker and did a lot of good defensive work through tracking back and tackling or through work rate alone so that our right wing channel was always more than active. I think his good work accounted for a good number of clean sheets we posted from Christmas to March last season.
But the issue here is none of us really wanted to see Markovic doing that sort of work. He was brought in to dazzle and he only really showed that, or more specifically, was allowed to show that in one match against Sunderland away where he scored an excellent goal and almost scored a second stunner. The guy has talent. He was fantastic for Benfica and £20m was understandable for someone young, highly talked of in European coaching circles and had a great season in Portugal and in Europe. I hope we see him return next year, stronger and all the better for his experience in Turkey.
