The phrase "marquee signing" is a horrible commercialist phrase invented by people who have no interest in the game, only the "brand"/the money.
These types tag on the suggestion that a "marquee signing" is an unnecessary gimmick, doing the fans "a favour".
I like to think of "experienced, top quality players". Souness and Dalglish would have fitted this category. Likewise, Lawro, Torres, the Rush return, Masch, perhaps Alonso. Also Beardsley etc ie players that truly made a different. And gave us silverware.
The reality is that we really lack experienced top class players. The nearest I can see are Sturridge (2.5 good yrs) Lovren (1 yr at Soton) and perhaps Balotelli.
None of these have had the consistent, long performance at the very top levels. So to me, we are screaming out for experienced top class players or "marquees" as the button counters and media men would say.
