      Southampton equalised Clyne 56′
      Allen came on at 63'
      Lambert came on at 76'
Sturridge scored the WINNER at 79′

Allen and Lambert came on and they made an impact. We won.

What I find "worrying" is the fact that even though we did win, there are still negative posts here.

If you want to worry something, then start supporting Man Utd.

But... but ...but Man utd have two world class strikers  :lmao:

Gotta give Mignolet so much credit there for that save at the end. What a bloody reflex this boy has.

They abused Johnson, Allen was really poor and despite Lucas playing fairly well our midfield today was out of shape. Instead of a flat back three with Stevie splitting the centre backs, we had a back four in a box shape with Hendo the only one pushing up. It really isolated Coutinho.

Sterling is magic though. And Javi Manquillo looked brilliant. So committed, well timed tackles and his position on the pitch was first class.

Wait?! What?! Allen poor? You're on another planet mate, I thought he was F***ing excellent

Glen Johnson and Lucas Leiva didn't win a single tackle between them for Liverpool against Southampton today.

A win is a win is a win.

Genrally poor performance all round today but we came through in the end.

Brendan was too cautious starting with the 14231 but did well to adjust to 1433 then the 1442 diamond. As some have mentioned above, Luvas and Stevie playing together is a no-no since both of them sit deep and lack pace - they don't add much protection and offer little going forward playing together.

Migs, Raheem, Lovren, Manq - wonderful.

Hendo had industry and a sublime pass but was wasted on the right.

Sturridge took his goal well but was marked out of the game for long periods a bit too easily - bringing Lambert on helped.

Coutinho let himself get bullied. Lucas was woeful and I can't even bring myself to post about Johnson's performance. If he is expecting an improved contract on the back of that he has got a big shock coming.

And finally the crowd were atrocious. Might not be a popular thing to say but everyone needs to buck their ideas up if we want to win this thing.

Well done to Southampton who showed some real pride and fight - quite a few commentators had already earmarked them for relegation after the transfer window.

But, all being said, a win is a win is a win.

Glad of the result but very boring. It was the first time I've ever seen Mexican Wave started…in the pub.

going to post this first before I read everyone's comments so it doesn't affect what I want to write

      1) I thought for a big part of the game... esp 2nd half... we were sh*te. lets face it, southhampton did enough for a tie if not out right win it.

      2) mig while iffy with distribution (getting better but still lots to improve) is a great stop keeper.  great reflex saves kept us in and preserved win

      3) I thought sterling, allen, cou played especially well up front.  sturridge did well too, he willjust need to adjust to life post suarez and realize he is not the target man and will have much less room

      4) gerrard and lucas still imo should not be on the pitch together in the same time.  we need another runner like hendo in the midfield

5)I thought lovren did well. but our defense still causes my heart rate to accelerate at light speed

      6) esp in the 2nd half we had so much difficulty stringing penetrating passes together.  southhampton on the other hand, played more like Liverpool than we did

      7) still only the first game and happy with the 3 wins, cant win every game gloriously.  and I would take 38 gritty wins if that's what it will take for us to lift the trophy.  lfc might not have many fans left alive at the end of the season tho ;D

if we are to have two holding midfielders one of them has to be a terrier and tackle everything that moves i.e Mascherano.

Saved him having to throw away or burn his shirt. I think a few people could have used that idea when Torres left.

Was worried when I saw that Lucas was playing. No offence to the lad but he offers us absolutely nothing and so it proved today BUT we got away with it. There were two players starting today that I think we all agreed shouldn't be but for injuries - Lucas as mentioned and Johnson. It's impossible to see either of them at the club long term. It was an underwhelming line up and as it proved it was an underwhelming victory. But my god you don't complain about these results too much especially at the start of the season when getting on the board with 3 points is oh so important.

Must be said though - very impressed with how organised and how much Southampton ran today. We were up against it today and it says something about our resolve to have reclaimed the three points after they equalised. Their work rate was superb.

Gonna watch MOTD and record that amazing Henderson pass and then wear the F***ing thing out repeatedly playing it over and over and over.

Forgot to mention Lovren but he was immense today also.

Won everything in the air, made a couple great tackles and interceptions, but his play on the ball is just as effective his passing oozes urgency and positivity. Think he lead the line well too, with Moreno in that back four looks a lot stronger for me. Manquillo will become better as time goes on and his nerves settle.

Searching for a gif of the Mignolet save. If anyone can find one please post it.

No idea how he got a finger on that. Long thought he scored.

On searching google images for 'mignolet gif' in the past 24 hours the best I could find was this, enjoy...

All that matters is 3 points and the fact we have 3 point more than we did last season in this game.

We didn't look good but then, Arse needed a 92m goal to beat manager-less Crystal Palace, Spurs were poor by all accounts too, Man City 0-1 up but if Toon had half a clue up front, they'd be leading right now

My biggest complaint about today, now that the dust has settled is that we are gagging for another top drawer striker to help Studge who tends to go missing for parts of games and we still lack that steel in midfield. Though that might be due to the fact that we had Gerrard (legs going) and Lucas (never had them) in the middle.

I don't expect Markovic to start against City, not match fit and it's a tough away game, and the same with Can, and that means Allen has to start. I expect Moreno to start though as I think he's fit enough

Think this is why we saw two deep lying midfielders and our fullbacks not bombing forward as much, Rodgers was quite cautious in his approach and in the end it paid off.

Voted for Lovren.  Would have conceded 2 or 3 without him..although Stirling was the difference

Joe Allen showed a lot of tenacity.
