Liverpool 2:1 Southampton. In game and post match relief.
      Aug 17, 2014 12:30:24 pm

      Anfield today

Starting XI: Mignolet, Manquillo, Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge
Subs: Jones, Toure, Sakho, Allen, Ibe, Can, Lambert.

When Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign against Southampton on Sunday, manager Brendan Rodgers will be attempting to build on last season's second-placed finish.

But whatever Rodgers achieves at Anfield, he is unlikely to surpass the feats of Bob Paisley, who took charge of Liverpool in the league for the first time exactly 40 years ago, with a 2-1 win at Luton on 17 August 1974.

Another season begins without 96 brothers and sisters. JUSTICEFORTHE96

Daniel Sturridge’s goals won Liverpool 20 points in the Premier League last season; more than any other player for their side. Key!

[Today, my grandma has passed away. She was never a football fan but she always listened the Liverpool results on the radio and she would phone me the score. Hope that the Reds will pay my sadness.]

      Keep it up Reds.

Not sure why Lucas is getting the nod ahead of Can, seems like we're limiting ourselves from the off.

Nevertheless I have every faith in us to go out there ad get the three points, buzzing for this game.

      Come on you reds.

Can't wait now and got a bit of spare time to get to see the game.

Interesting line up with Lucas instead of Can as I would have expected it to be the new signing starting.

      Come On You Reds!

Surprised Lucas is starting over Can. In pre season Lucas was pretty terrible when compared to Can's performances.

Big chance for Lucas today to make a claim to being a regular first teamer. Worry about the lack of mobility between Gerrard and Lucas.

Anyway, we have a lot of firepower in that team with Coutinho, Sterling and Sturridge.

Surprising midfield that when you consider how awful the Lucas-Gerrard partnership was last year.

A little less confident than I was earlier but I still think we'll have enough to win it.

Hopefully it won't be as a two and Lucas will play further forward with Hendo.

They end up stepping on each others toes and taking the same positions when they playd as a two last season.

Talking stops now, time to deliver.

A nice comfy home win against a side all over the place on Day 1, should set things up nicely for next week.

      Is Jose injured again?

Strange to have no full back on the bench and two centre halves.

I said during the Dortmund game Can looked like he was limping a little. I do wonder if he is feeling his calf a little still? Could be an explanation.

Pumped up. Let's do this boys. Come on red men.

Have to question Lucas and Gerrard in the team, unless Gerrard plays further forward, I don't see how this would work. Think we need Coutinho in the middle with Sterling and Ibe as wide players, I can see Southampton parking the bus :/

I presume Gerrard will play the deepest mid in the diamond.
If they play well like this:

      then happy days.

Obviously Sterling up top with Coutinho at the top of the diamond.
      Lovren and Manquillo into defence.

      Lets do it!

That's what I'd like to see mate.

Great to see Jordan Ibe on the bench as well.

Can is going to be very good but Lucas is very experienced and won't be drawn into the nervousness one might feel debut day in the premier league.

10pm start here, perfect time really. Great weekend about to be topped off with a reds win.

Similarly perplexed with Lucas starting in there, but overall feel alright with that XI. Think there's too much there for the Saints to deal with, provided the trio up front fire the way we know they can.

      Pumped. Lets F***ing do this.
