Yep I think a loan was always our plan for him this season, lets hope he can build on a decent season in Spain and be a first-team contender for us next year

There were rumours regarding this move last week. It also said that Bordeaux were hoping to make the deal permanent come the end of the season.

Kind of knew he'd be loaned out again but it would be shame if there is an agreement to sell on.

      Good luck to him anyway.

Thought he'd have a big role to play here, apparently not. Good luck Tiago

I think his 'big role' is coming.
A loan to the french league is a damn good move for him and us.
He was never going to get the crucial developing through games with us this season with Lovren, Sakho, Skrtel, Toure and Coates around (Agger is off in my opinion).
      Good move all around.

First team football is more important for him at this stage than playing 5th choice at Liverpool. He isn't good enough to get in ahead of those that we already have (Lovren, Sakho, Agger and Skrtel).

Hopefully this means Coates sticks around and fights for his place.  After the great preseason he had I could see him sneaking up to third in line quite easily above Sakho.

Coates had an excellent pre-season and showed that he has improved leaps and bounds since going out on loan.  Why should he not be rewarded for that?

Or do we have some unbreakable hierarchy at the club where your spot in the pecking order is directly correlated to how much you were bought for?

Well at least he's getting plenty of 'experience' in Europe if nothing else: although he'd probably got just as much, if we'd let him stay with Sporting. :-\

Coates did have a good pre season. I'm glad he looks sharp after his injury trouble, looked alert etc
Sakho hasn't done anything wrong and looks solid every time he's played, consistently.
So I don't see why Sakho is suddenly subpar or not good enough for your new team shake up you'd like to implement.

I think with Toure staying and possibly Agger it's the best move for him, i would have liked to see him go to a team in the premiership but I think it's really hard for young CB's to gain experience in this league, managers normally like experience at CB and it's not really a position you use subs for barring injury. So hopefully he will play 20 plus games next season and come back to us ready to push for 3rd place CB

Coates did have a good preseason, but not this unbelievably great one or anything. Good to see him recover from an ACL tear like he has. But he's not at this point better than Agger, Lovren, Sakho or Skrtel, and you could probably make the argument that Toure still gets a very very very slight nod as well given his experience.

I was impressed with Coates in preseason, but it was relative to my expectations of him.
