      Bands With One Perfect Album
      Sep 21, 2014 01:33:23 am
It may be a band or group you're a fan of or one you're not too keen on but hit that right spot once in a blue moon but there are sometimes  when a band just gets things exactly right and 'perfection' is found.

My first choice is a band I am a fan of but one that for me has never, and will never, get near their debut album and that is Glasvegas with their eponymous debut.

May not be to everyone's taste but James Allen's lyrics added to their version of a Spector type Wall of Sound style just hits the spot for me.

      1. Flowers And Football Tops
      2. Geraldine
      3. It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry
      4. Lonesome Swan
      5. Go Square Go
      6. Polmont On My Mind
      7. Daddy's Gone
      8. Stabbed
      9. S.A.D. Light
      10. Ice Cream Van

Glasvegas - It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry

      Glasvegas- polmont on my mind

      Achtung Baby - U2

The reality is they've made a few perfect albums (Joshua Tree as mentioned, War) but Changed my perspective on this particular band completely. Only properly listened to it back in 2009 and while I did count myself as a U2 fan beforehand I never quite appreciated just how ambitious and exciting they were. Reading back on that album and the supporting Zoo TV Live tour (along with Zooropa) it seems they stood alone in their brilliance in the early 90s. It may be perceived as "uncool" praising them these days but to do so would be to betray the obvious greatness and contribution they have made to pop/rock music. Their size and scale, which can put people off, should never detract from that. Achtung Baby best defines the perfection of U2 and is relentless in its quality from start to finish, lyrically, musically and production wise.

One outstanding album,  everytime it gets played I think to myself 'have to get some more of their stuff' - still only got the one CD.

If it was a one-album band, I would say The La's also. I can still remember the first time I listened to it. It was only a few years ago, around 3 or 4 when I got the full album, and I was just blown away by it and definitely rate it as one of my favourite albums ever now.

Other than that, I would go for The Killers - Hot Fuss also. 11 years old now.

Arctic Monkeys - depending on the mood, I can flick between Whatever People Say I Am and AM. Both brilliant albums IMO.

Kanye West - Graduation is just fantastic. Brilliant mix of melody, soul, beats and stories.

I have a good few albums I tend to turn to too, depending on my mood, including ones that shouldn't really count but my favourite Bruce Sprinsteen album is actually The Promise - it's all old B-sides!

Some belters of choices of bands with great albums mentioned on here though.

Kanye back when he was good.

Guns n Roses before Rose vanished up his own arse.

I really like The Bends and some of OK Computer....but that's it. The rest is largely for pseudo-intellectual art students to furiously w*nk over proclaiming their love of Radiohead and Thom Yorke just to look 'progressive' and 'with it' in the company of their vacuous pals. I may admire the technical wizardry of Kid A and the rest after it but at the end of the day they just don't represent song writing in its most natural and pure form. The whole 'confused? You should be!' act is getting a bit tiresome now and it showed with their last album which was insipid bar the odd song like Codex.

I think OK Computer is a masterpiece and for me is Radiohead's 'Dark Side Of The Moon'.

No I don't have an issue with those who proclaim OK Computer's greatness. I just think The Bends is better but there's no doubt that those two albums were Radiohead's best as it was all about the songs and melody.

I find it hard to find a 'winner' between The Bends and Ok Computer as they are different albums in how they sound.

But as I said Radiohead can't be in this thread as they have had more than one perfect album.

Absolutely and many will agree with you.

Oh and I've got another suggestion - Franz Ferdinand's debut. That was something else. 10 years old now!  :o

      edit: And a couple more!

      Demon Days - Gorillaz
A Rush Of Blood To The Head - Coldplay

Three albums I ravished growing up.

A superb album (recorded in Liverpool no less!) accompanied by some fine b sides from that era as well. Check out Crests of Waves and I Ran Away on youtube especially. Will never be bettered.

I like these threads because I do genuinely then make the effort to listen to the suggested albums and give them a go.
It concerns me when the likes of U2 and Coldplay are mentioned, however!

Radiohead - The Bends is a good shout because, like racer I'm reading the topic subject as bands with one great album, not just an album from your favourite band (I like some of Pablo Honey but it's not a great album).

      The Offspring - Smash
Career defining work. One of the standout New-Wave Punk albums that didn't take itself too seriously and could be left to spin over and over on a hot summer's day or late night bender.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream.
Gish was great but raw and not easily accessible.
Mellon Collie could have been great but was padded out by dodgy offerings to make a double album.
Everything they did after that was dog sh*t.
Between those two albums was a work of perfection with no weak links. Siamese Dream can still calm me after a bad day or bring a lump to my throat, inspiring memories of carefree times... when decent music was being made!

Surely greatness and perfection are separate things though with perfection being subjective? I mean, The Beatles have probably at least 4 great albums but for me their one true perfect album is Abbey Road.

The innovative, ground breaking Sgt Pepper is the one for me, Abbey Road while being a perfect album was a precursor to the musically abstract brilliance of Sgt Pepper.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream.

Many a drunken discussion between myself and my mates on this.
I've always claimed Siamese Dream to be a more complete album.
If Melon Collie had been a single CD it would have been perfect, but there is far too much self indulgent sh*te on there.

Surprised at the Soundgarden and Pantera suggestions. Not because they aren't awesome albums (they definitely are) but because Superunknown and Far Beyond Driven are also great, great albums (imho).

I haven't listened to the whole thing Si. Found his accent a  bit overpowering if I'm honest. Didn't hate what I heard but I didn't love it either mate.

Bands with just one perfect album -

      Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Sex Pistols - Nevermind The Bollocks
      Blondie - Parallel Lines
      Eels - Beautiful Freak

I've just downloaded Eels and Beach Boys on the back of your post and will give them a listen on the drive to Northumberland tomorrow.

I do like some Eels but have always got them mixed up with Doves for some strange reason when they're referred to.

James Allen's accent is very strong and I'd guess a love or hate thing.

I'm not that sure on the Eels album but Mouse is 100% with Pet Sounds. Perfection.

New York band We Are Scientists came onto the indie scene by storm with their second album "With Love and Squalor". I totally loved this band from the first listen, they had everything in the album - all killer songs and even today (it was released in 2005) the music does not sound past it. Unfortunately they sizzled out after that and their follow-up albums can never grace the heights of their debut. They use to headline the main stages at festivals, now they've been relegated to the smaller ones, shame because that breakthrough album was a masterpiece.

Yeah will give them a proper headphone listen when I'm back home. 4 year old demanding the Ghostbusters song every 5 minutes of my journey kind of ruined the moment. That and Henrietta by the Fratellis are the scourge of my life now. Must have heard them both 2 million times.

"Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" are both perfect for me. Choosing one "perfect" Beatles album is like trying to pick a "perfect" Kinks album: "Village Green," "Arthur" and "Lola" are all perfect.

      --

A few off the top of my head:

      "Highway Star" - Deep Purple
"Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" - Derek & the Dominos
"All Things Must Pass" - George Harrison (do individuals count?)
"New Miserable Experience" - Gin Blossoms (one of my favorite 90s albums)
      "Nevermind" - Nirvana

Been listening to The Beach Boys recently and made reminded me how incredible some of their work was. I think everyone would be unanimous in saying this was THE one perfect album for The Beach Boys. They might have what many feel to be their only great album but it might just possibly be the greatest of all time. If only Smile had been fully flourished because the sessions they released back in 2011 were incredible.

Totally agree. The Beach Boys were unbelievable musicians. A lot of people think of them as just a standard pop, bubble gum surf band and they were so much more. Their use of string quartets, new instruments and new recording technologies were revolutionary. Not too mention their harmonizing.  After listening to Pet Sounds Lennon and McCartney wrote Sgt. Pepper.  They said they wanted to make an album that was as good as Pet Sounds.
Beach Boys are so much more than a surf band. Brian Wilson is easily a top 10 musician, writer of all time.

Completely agree. I think their surf pop/rock was pure pop perfection as well but they really did something no other band has come close to with Pet Sounds and Smile. For Brian Wilson and co to do it without the kind of pretentiousness that too many music acts feel they must display to show their creative and original side made them even more brilliant in my view. Just a level of creativity and ingenuity that came naturally to Wilson.

Yes Pet Sounds is just unbelievable. And Smile is regrettably the greatest lost masterpiece in the history of music - such a shame what happened with that.

After that, I was always of the opinion that everything after was pretty poor, but Sunflower and Surf's Up from 1970/71 were both very good albums. Obviously not at the level of Pet Sounds but critically, those albums were very well received and are well worth listening to and are arguably two hidden gems considering they didn't do much commercially.

Has anyone seen the new film Love & Mercy? Only seen the trailer, but the Paul Dano bits look really good, but the John Cusack bits look naff - for a start, Cusack looks nothing like Brian Wilson.

Probably get a few funny looks for this but waiting for the new Drake album to drop so had his 'Take Care' album on repeat. I love my hip hop and R&B and loved Biggie and Tupac, Jay Z, etc but that album.

It is my favourite Hip Hop/R&B album ever now. So different. Jam packed with gorgeous sounds and beats it just oozes style. Night time music. If you've only ever heard his stuff that gets played on the radio and been put off but like that kind of stuff then you're missing out. No gangster bollocks just stylish music with clear lyrics.

      Excellent. Perfect album for me.

Not a band but ya know.

I really like "Brothers and Sisters" by the Allman Brothers Band. "Wasted Words," "Jessica," "Southbound" and of course one of all-time my favorites, "Ramblin' Man." Great album!

Pearl jam. .Ten. imo better than Nirvanas nevermind

Rage against the machine 1st album

Beatles Rubber Soul/Revolver...which was technically 1 album.

      Metallica And Justice For All

      Foo Fighters 1st

      Smashing Pumpkins

      Beck Odelay

      Minor Threat...Out of Step

      Fugazi...any

If there is a Foo Fighters album going in here it has to be "The Colour and The Shape"

"perfect live albums" that doesn't include "Live at the Apollo," "Live at Leeds," "Frampton Comes Alive," "At Fillmore East" and "One More From the Road"? Surely you jest!
