Surely greatness and perfection are separate things though with perfection being subjective? I mean, The Beatles have probably at least 4 great albums but for me their one true perfect album is Abbey Road.

The innovative, ground breaking Sgt Pepper is the one for me, Abbey Road while being a perfect album was a precursor to the musically abstract brilliance of Sgt Pepper.

"Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" are both perfect for me. Choosing one "perfect" Beatles album is like trying to pick a "perfect" Kinks album: "Village Green," "Arthur" and "Lola" are all perfect.

      --

A few off the top of my head:

      "Highway Star" - Deep Purple
"Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" - Derek & the Dominos
"All Things Must Pass" - George Harrison (do individuals count?)
"New Miserable Experience" - Gin Blossoms (one of my favorite 90s albums)
      "Nevermind" - Nirvana

We're you down with the whole Brit pop thing then? I would have Blur, Oasis, and Pulp as my getting ready to go out music back then.

Hole - "Live through this" is an amazing album. Probably written by Cobain but I digress on that. Other than that, their stuff was crap.

      The Beatles - Rubber Soul

All of the above, to me, got it bang on when they released those albums..in lyrics, vibe, musicianship, melody, energy and production..

Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon was their era defining album with honourable mention to The Wall
ACDC - Back in Black, one of the all time great rock albums

Bands with just one perfect album -

      Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Sex Pistols - Nevermind The Bollocks
      Blondie - Parallel Lines
      Eels - Beautiful Freak

Been listening to The Beach Boys recently and made reminded me how incredible some of their work was. I think everyone would be unanimous in saying this was THE one perfect album for The Beach Boys. They might have what many feel to be their only great album but it might just possibly be the greatest of all time. If only Smile had been fully flourished because the sessions they released back in 2011 were incredible.

Totally agree. The Beach Boys were unbelievable musicians. A lot of people think of them as just a standard pop, bubble gum surf band and they were so much more. Their use of string quartets, new instruments and new recording technologies were revolutionary. Not too mention their harmonizing.  After listening to Pet Sounds Lennon and McCartney wrote Sgt. Pepper.  They said they wanted to make an album that was as good as Pet Sounds.
Beach Boys are so much more than a surf band. Brian Wilson is easily a top 10 musician, writer of all time.

Completely agree. I think their surf pop/rock was pure pop perfection as well but they really did something no other band has come close to with Pet Sounds and Smile. For Brian Wilson and co to do it without the kind of pretentiousness that too many music acts feel they must display to show their creative and original side made them even more brilliant in my view. Just a level of creativity and ingenuity that came naturally to Wilson.

Yes Pet Sounds is just unbelievable. And Smile is regrettably the greatest lost masterpiece in the history of music - such a shame what happened with that.

After that, I was always of the opinion that everything after was pretty poor, but Sunflower and Surf's Up from 1970/71 were both very good albums. Obviously not at the level of Pet Sounds but critically, those albums were very well received and are well worth listening to and are arguably two hidden gems considering they didn't do much commercially.

Has anyone seen the new film Love & Mercy? Only seen the trailer, but the Paul Dano bits look really good, but the John Cusack bits look naff - for a start, Cusack looks nothing like Brian Wilson.
