Basel 1 - 0 Liverpool: In Game & Post Game Wonderings (again).
      Oct 01, 2014 06:31:11 pm

Starting XI:Mignolet, Manquillo, Enrique, Lovren, Skrtel, Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Markovic, Balotelli
Subs: Jones, Toure, Moreno, Lucas, Lallana, Lambert, Borini

Philippe Coutinho and Jose Enrique have been named in the starting XI for Liverpool's Champions League clash with FC Basel at St. Jakob-Park tonight.

Brendan Rodgers has made two alterations to the side he sent out to face Everton during Saturday's Merseyside derby draw at Anfield.

Coutinho comes in for Adam Lallana, while Enrique, making his second start of the current campaign, is preferred to compatriot Alberto Moreno at left-back.

Mario Balotelli will once again assume a central role, leading the line in the absence of Daniel Sturridge, who remained in Liverpool as the squad flew out to Switzerland on Tuesday.

Raheem Sterling and Lazar Markovic join the Reds' attack along with Coutinho, while Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson assume deeper midfield roles.

Big chance for Jose Enrique tonight as he looks to win that battle with Moreno for the left-back spot. Even for Coutinho.

With Markovic looking a bit bamboozled by pace of PL it makes sense to use him in Europe. Still needs to adapt to team as well, mind.

F***ing come on, would be a huge step towards qualification already if we win tonight, and reduce pressure for the matches against Real.

Find it ridiculous that Markovic is starting ahead of Lallana, he hasn't done anything worthy of being in the squad, let alone the starting 11.

Shame Lallana isn't starting, was our best player against Middlesborough and Everton. Makes no sense to me tbh.

Yeah, most likely gives 100% where as Suso doesn't!

I don't want to spread negative energy but how on earth all those posters come here when we're losing or when we loss or when a player is not playing good. I'm seeing very low activity here in posting their comments before a game or something but when we are at a bad moment, many posters come and illuminate here with their one off post so to increase our frustration.

Think he can shine in a game like this, finding it difficult to adapt to the prem IMO.

Not sure how you can say that after 4 games.
New country, new language, new team, new team mates, new league, still coming back from injury and just 20 years old.

He'll be fine in due course, and how's he going to adapt if he doesn't get games, as some on here advocate.

Gonna be a hard game, but I like our line-up.
Hopefully its Coutinho in the middle of a 3, with Sterling and Markovic right and left respectively.
With Mario up front we need to get it wide and sling in some crosses.

Interesting, not our strongest available team with Lallana and Moreno on the bench - BR with an eye on the West Brom match maybe? If so, I'm good with that, league is bread and butter. Plus Enrique looked OK when he was played, and though Markovic yet to make impression (tbh I'd have Suso starting ahead of him tonight and he's not even on the bench !?! ) he is certainly getting a chance to show something.

I remember being the vicinity of an England training camp when all the sports writers etc said the most impressive player in training was Henderson, that was a time when he was getting pesters from everyone Liverpool fans as well.

Yep, quite agree mate but if I'm honest everyone needs to put a shift in, win this we are virtually thru, I think we are better than them quality wise and that for me will be the difference,  pivotal game of the group for me, the matches V Real will look after themselves but we have to beat those closest to us.
