      Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli)
      Jan 11, 2015 03:33:24 pm
Looks like we're linked with Higuain again. Personally, I think he would be a fantastic signing. He did very well at Real, and already has 9 goals this season in 17 games for Napoli. Not quite in same class as Sanchez, but a proven goalscorer at top clubs and country. Very pacy as well, so would suit our style. I would be very happy if we could capture him.

A number of sources, including ESPN are linking us to him, so looks like genuine interest. Get him in if we can.

I don't think he's pacey at all, but wonderful striker with exceptional movement and game intelligence, and of course, he can finish. Would love us to do a swap deal, give them Borini & Balo for Higuain.... but lets be honest, it's never gonna happen :(

He's no Sterling or Sturridge, but not slow either. He does have excellent movement though, and he can finish. Why would it never happen? Napoli may not make Champion's League this year, in which case he's in same position. I think this one will come down to just money.  Really hope there is substance to this link.

He cost Napoli more than 30m 18 months ago, no chance this is happening.

For a change (even though it would be wishful thinking) lets try signing a player coveted by other clubs..

Would rather spend that money on Lacazette who is more versatile across the front-3 than Higuain

I don't this is as unlikely as people are making out. Napoli have signed Gabbiadini and Higuain allegedly himself is open to the idea of coming here. A number of sources, including Independent, Telegraph, ESPN and Echo are  reporting it. I really think this will come down to money. We'll need to find buyers for Balo and Borini/Lambert to finance some of it though.

Would be a brilliant signing...I can envisage Higuain wanting to come here but not so sure about FSG stumping up £30 mil.

What an absurd notion - that we should only go for players who have their prices pushed up by competition - that a player is only worth getting if another big club wants them too.

This more sounds like wanting to get one over another club than wanting the best player. Remember that all our most successful recent transfers (Coutinho, Suarez, Sturridge) had no-one else in for them, and that many of our summer signings required us to fend off competition.

A final point, not directed at Vicks at all (as I have never observed the poster make such comments), its rather irritating to hear our fans say crap like "we should have gone for proven players", but also turn up their noses at actual proven players in favour of players who have far less history of quality. For example Lacazette over Higuain. (NB: I'm not saying I have a crystal ball and know which would be the better player for Liverpool - just annoyed at the hypocrisy)

If Higuian somehow wants to come here and we can snatch him for only £30 million and the owners don't front the cash then we need to start campaigning against the owners.

Errr what if under FFP our earnings don't allow us to fork 30 million and wages. Some people seem to forget it's not about owners putting their own money in anymore FFS.

Well it does mean selling Borini and Balo to raise cash, something I would be glad to do personally.

Rumours are circulating that Balo is off to Juventus on loan. Presumably if Higuain is really on the radar a home will be found for Borini.  In fact any sudden developments on the Borini front might indicate that there may be a Higuain deal in the offing.

Nah, they indicate that there is a striking deal in the offing. Higuain is just one of those rumours which don't really go away.

We're 5 years too late for Higuain. His value will only go down from now on, doesn't align with FSGs policy...

Neither does giving away Suso for free. I think FSG might be a little confused about their policy.

What a classic case of misinterpretation! My point was that we rarely win or try to win the 'battle' when a second, third or fourth club enter the fray. Never did I say we should go for expensive proven players, so I'm not sure why you've gone off your rails and started the hypocrisy talk.

Anyway, back to Higuain, this will never happen as Rafa wouldn't jeopardize his job and Napoli's CL qualification by selling their most prized asset. If we are to sign Origi- him and Studge will be like 2 new signings. So I pretty much think the only recruit this month would be a GK.

However, if we DO find a buyer for Borini and if we do send Mario on loan to Juve (with a mandatory option to buy), things would get interesting!

After his performance against Sunderland at the weekend I would actually keep Borini until the Summer and try offload Balotelli and Lambert this window. It's clear this season that the team does not function with a big slow target man so no point pretending anymore. Borini may not be the most skilful or have goals in him but at least he fits into the system, runs the channels and presses from the front with energy.

Second that. But will he be enough (esp if Mario and Lambert offloaded) is the mil $ question..! Studge, Sterling, Borini and Origi (if he returns) as our front line options. Having said that, would love to see how the 4-4-2 diamond works when Studge is back

Well that's entirely different from what you actually said, which was to go for players coveted by other teams (which we do do - example Lallana against the mancs). Next time if you want people to understand you, say what you meant to say instead of something different.
I also I stated the hypocrisy bit wasn't directed at you.

"..that we should only go for players who have their prices pushed up by competition.." - guess you pulled that out of thin air then.. either way, pff...

In other news, Allegri has said this - "I think this is a made up story. Balotelli has done very well with me but he belongs to Liverpool and he is not a player that can arrive at Juventus."

Don't give a sh*t whether his value will go down or not so long as they are beneficial and help get us the results. FSG can shove their policy and need to accept they have to pay out on proven players to actually get to the next level.
