Bolton 1-2 Liverpool (FA Cup R4 Replay): In game and Post Match celebration
      Feb 04, 2015 06:45:06 pm

      Today at Macron

Starting XI: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Allen, Gerrard, Moreno, Markovic, Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling

Subs: Ward, Johnson, Lambert, Henderson, Sturridge, Manquillo, Borini

Steven Gerrard makes his 700th appearance for Liverpool as they attempt to overcome Bolton Wanderers in an FA Cup fourth round replay this evening.

The captain returns to Brendan Rodgers' line-up after missing the weekend win over West Ham United, to seal an incredible personal achievement 17 years after making his first-team debut.

Gerrard resumes captaincy duties, while Joe Allen is also included in the starting XI at the Macron Stadium - the pair are named in place of fellow midfielders Jordan Henderson and Lucas Leiva.

Meanwhile, Daniel Sturridge is again selected as a substitute following his goalscoring comeback from a lengthy injury lay-off against the Hammers last Saturday.

Sturridge, Lambert and Borini on the bench. No place in the squad for Balotelli, who is effectively now liverpool fifth choice striker. Can't believe it ;D :D

The Allen-Gerrard pairing could be problematic. Pretty happy with the team otherwise.

As some of you know I am one of the few who rates Allen as a defensive midfielder and what he brings to the team and thinks he deserves a place in Liverpool squad. I am wary of an Allen Gerrard midfield though. Allen is excellent at the defensive duties and controlling games, but I fear it may lack dynamism and physicality - qualities which Henderson and Lucas typically provide - and will be needed against Bolton.

      Could be wrong though.

James Pearce: Lucas Leiva ruled out tonight with a minor thigh problem but he's expected to be fit for the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Really should be a pretty easy game for us. Need to take it by the scruff of the neck early.

Hands up, who saw wee joe being handed a run out. ?

So pleased Brendan has went strong , think he recognises we have a better than average chance of going all the way,

Don't have too many worries with Gerrard and Allen in front of the cb's, I like the balance we have, very little disruption I can see us bagging a few tonight,

Definitely right decision to play Allen. Not sure about the pairing though.

He doesn't have the positional awareness of Lucas, but he's a very underrated player.
It strikes me that people don't rate players who don't do the spectacular, but the workhorses of the team are arguably more important than "flashy" players.

Allen is one of the least error prone players in the squad. If anything he plays the game too safely.

Not so keen on Joe Allen myself. I'd rather see Hendo in there as I think Bolton will be quite tough - Neil Lennon is a good manager imo, good record against better teams in the Champs League at Celtic.
Still we've got to rest Hendo sometimes I suppose, we can always bring him on second half.

Balo not injured, but doesn't make the bench? Kind of looks like we are accumulating a lot of strikers that we don't actually want.

Anyway, I think this is going to be a good game the night.
Stevie to score the winer in the 89th minute. That'll do fine for me.

Weird isn't it. I'm glad that people are starting to recognize Lucas' talents as non-flashy player, but that hasn't always been the case. Allen for me is a bit worse version of Lucas. A bit worse than the best DM in the league is good enough for meriting a place in the squad though  ;D.

Not really the same sort of midfielder though - and I believe we need a good defensive midfielder for our current formation to work.

As far as Lucas goes, I've always thought he's an excellent footballer, but he also worked hard to add to his game.

I see a lot of similarities when Allen plays.
He may be a bit rusty at first tonight, but I'm expecting a solid enough game from him.

The problem as I see it will be when Allen goes forwards.
If Gerrard follows him and strays out of position, it could leave us open.
