Crystal Palace 1:2 Liverpool. In game and post match glow
      Feb 14, 2015 04:29:41 pm

      Did you forget Valentine's Day?

      Brendan and Co at Selhurst

Starting XI: Mignolet, Skrtel, Can, Sakho, Allen, Henderson, Moreno, Markovic, Coutinho, Lallana, Sturridge

Subs: Ward, Johnson, Lovren, Lambert, Manquillo, Borini, Balotelli

Brendan Rodgers has made two changes to his Liverpool starting XI for the FA Cup fifth round clash against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Steven Gerrard, who was withdrawn during the Reds' 3-2 Barclays Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday due to a hamstring problem, comes out of the team to be replaced by Joe Allen.

Jordon Ibe, who has impressed in recent weeks with powerful displays against Everton and Spurs is cup-tied for the fixture, so Adam Lallana is restored to the team to start in his place.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are unchanged, with Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel and Emre Can forming the bedrock of the side's defence and Daniel Sturridge notching a second start up front since returning from injury.

Allen/Lallana in for injured Gerrard & cup tied Ibe. Rodgers opts to play Allen in midfield rather than moving Can there & starting Lovren.

      Strong team.
3 strikers on the bench. Highly likely that if Borini comes on it will be at wingback.

Balotelli needed to start today to keep his momentum up. Dropping him to the bench gets rid of that.

Very disappointed with Allen starting over Lovren. Would much sooner see Can in midfield and thought Lovren did enough as a sub to deserve a place in today's line up.

I think Rodgers wants solid and consistent back 3 or 5 as you wish.

Sorry mate, that is rubbish. His "momentum" won't be affected either way.

I'm a bit worried about this one, and not that confident of a good result.

Might just be the nerves kicking in though.

3- 0 to the reds for me on this significant day, Sakho's and keegan's Birthday and the day Sir Bob passed away, would be a fitting tribute for him and celebration for the other two !

Sorry, came off a bit strong.
But people put far too much store in momentum. I think the task for Balotelli is to be rehabilitated. Whats best for him now is to focus on being a positive impact off the bench.  If he gets no minutes for a few weeks I could that being bad, but starting isn't imperative.

For about the millionth time this season, the bench looks so random! Not surprised by the starting line up, should be enough to get the job done today. Will be a nervy game that's for sure. Predict the red men to nick it by 1 goal.

Hope to see the Moreno dance today :D

Quite baffled at having 3 strikers on the bench too.

Only concern for me is Allen. Really showed how poor he is vs Lucas  lately. Fails to draw the opposition  in, pings an early sideways or backward  pass instead and is a lightweight in the tackle. Much prefer to have seen the beast that is Chan in midfield.

Can> Allen for me too, but I have to disagree about Allen being poor. He's been average, and in every game he has played recently, he has had the highest rate of ball winning in the team.

Edit: He's not flashy, but he is a solid DM.
On Can, in his recent interview for LFCtv I think he reveals why he didn't get much game time early on (something which I think mystified us all), as he says his fitness has improved a lot since then.

Would think that would be because he has played when Lucas hasn't.  Head to head Lucas's  stats would be better than Allen's.  The point is not just the ball winning though it's distribution and Lucas always draws an opposition player before generally playing an attacking pass forward. Allen just gets shut as quick as possible even if it puts someone like Sakho under pressure.

Joe Allen's not got a particularly good record this season.  Think he's won about 20% of the games he's started.

Difficult choice though whether to move Can there and bring back Johnson or Lovren, or just make the swap of Lucas and Allen.  Should have enough to beat Palace with that side - although if it's not going to plan then just hope that we make the change swift enough.

Come on Joe - prove us all wrong.
