Yeah it was great in the 60's, 70's and 80's unfortunately harking back to some examples more than 30 years ago is hardly relevant in this day and age.
Any examples from the 21st century?
These average punts are what we have specialised in for the last 20 years and they have never worked.
Let's see, Steve Finnan. Absolute quality on his day from little old Fulham. Quite possibly our best and most reliable right back of the 21st Century. And we've had some tough competition there.
Failing that, let's try say Peter Crouch. Certainly not on the Ian Rush level but much better than big name foreigners who cost more like Balotelli, Borini, Cisse. He came from a side relegated as well.
If that's not enough, Jordon Ibe from Wycombe. A young lad from the lower leagues who was probably our second best player in the season just gone, which shows how F***ing sh*t we were considering he weren't here for half of the year. If it weren't him, then it was Sterling - another kid who came from the lower leagues with QPR.
Our problem hasn't been signing lower league players because we don't do that a great deal anymore. Our problem has been buying overrated, overpriced players who have had a couple of good months for their clubs - both domestically and from abroad. Downing for 20 million, Markovic for 20 million spring to mind.
And if you actually cared to read the post, the point I was making was that signing a success story like Ian Rush didn't happen once every fifty years like the dope who posted it said. I was proving how we done it on a regular basis. But you missing the point is as common as signing a lower league success in the 70s. Just blame Gerrard for our failing to sign any successes from Yeovil in the last 15 years though.
And you know what? The young, football mad kid in me completely agrees with everything you state there. BUT, having seen what football has become over the years, thanks to Sky and the like, some of it good, a lot of it not so good, I have to think that we're not being ambitious enough and I hate myself for saying it.
Ings has had a very good season for a club expected to get relegated from the top tier of English football, whilst putting in the sort of performances Liverpool supporters have grown to love over the years. Work rate, sweat, quality. I just hope for him and us he really gets the chance and takes it with both feet. What a great story that would make!
Just imagine if Danny Ings became our next Rushie!? F**k, most of us, including myself would have to eat a large piece of humble pie, but it would be worth it!
Go on Danny, make us dream...
What is ambition though? Is it the price? Because we forked out a sh*t load on Andy Carroll, then people whinged that we spent too much. Is it the big name player? Because we brought in Fernando Morientes, Robbie Keane and Mario Balotelli all of whom were supposedly proven quality and that would line up as arguably our worst strike force of all time.
So where have we lacked ambition?
