Was number 7 retired for Dalglish, how about number 9 for Rush or 10 for John Barnes.

      Definitely NOT the Liverpool way!!

We may have to go through our fair share of Leohardsons and Heskeys but one day another man will be a legendary number 8 for us again.

Shirt numbers do not mean much of anything anymore. I mean, Markovic wears No. 50.

And I for one am all for retiring that jersey after last season!

There shouldl NEVER be another number 50

Solution to the problem, lets go back in time when players did not have numbers on their shirts. :f_tongueincheek:

Agree with the massive majority, no chance.

Which given recent developments means FSG will ignore the majority and retire 7 & 9 instead as they assisted 8 and therefore are clearly more culpable.

I don't think a number should be retired no player is bigger than the club and there will be plenty more players who will wear the number 8 jersey . Don't get me wrong in some cases it is a good idea showing a mark of respect Manchester City retiring number 23 for Foe , and number 6 at West Ham for Moore. But there just numbers. Bring back the days of numbers 1 to 11  :) .

God not this again, we had all this when Carra retired.

If we were to retire a shirt number every time a legend left the club, we'd be into the hundreds by now. Roger Hunt, one of the all time greats for Liverpool wore number 8. If we retired his shirt number, there wouldn't even be a number 8 for Stevie to wear - this after he wore 28 and 17 as well don't forget. Let's retire them as well?

Great players will come and go and eventually we will have another great number 8. It may start next season, it may not happen in my lifetime. Who knows. But the fact is, we will have another great number 8, so retiring shirt numbers is one of the daftest f**king ideas in football and that includes when it's done in honour of somebody like City did with Marc Vivian Foe's number 23 or when clubs retire the number 12 shirt for their fans, it's daft.

      What he said.

      ;D! yes well done mate!

Retire a shirt? FFS, what next? we don't play until a similar player of the like comes along again?
Or how about we retire the colour? To honour the shirt, which is red, we change it to pink!
Or how about we retire Gerrard permanently? he is not allowed to do anything until he is replaced!

However, like was mentioned, well done for reuniting the forum on this one!

If we retired every Jersey worn by a legend we would line up from 30 to 41 every week. So no

If someone God forbid died while playing then yes but other then that no it's something that should be left to clubs that don't have many heroes

As far as I'm concerned (but then who gives a sh*t!) your number used to indicate where on the pitch you played!
so even number 12 (when only 1 sub was allowed for injury not tatical reason (remember Billy1?))would not be a recognisable position.
It's only increased squad sizes and FIFA/UEFA f**king stupid requirements that require individual players to have a unique number, there can and should be 1-11 on the pitch and whoever comes on takes the players shirt (and tuck the f**ker in if it's too big!)
So regarding retiring shirt numbers, no, not in my opinion, the player retires or moves on NOT the shirt, the legend (whoever he may be) lives on in the minds of the fans.
The club is the foundations, the players are the decor (past, present and future), the trophies are an indication of past glories the replica shirts tell you of fans favorites.
Keep the number, remember the Legends !

Imagine the Torres song if we'd retired the number 9.

We bought the lad from sunny Spain... He gets the ball he scores again.

      Frenando Torres Liverpool's number 37.

      Haha

No. What about King Kenny's number 7 then ?

That's the point of my post, everyone remembers a great players shirt number, does that not belittle the previous wearers or indeed put pressure on the new owner?
The shirt and number belong to the club, the player is the current custodian of the shirt it's the player who's better or worse than the shirt wearer not the number itself
