Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez sustained a fracture to the lower left leg during the 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday night.

The defender needed to be substituted after 23 minutes at Turf Moor following a challenge from which he was unable to continue.

Gomez’s injury was further assessed by the Reds’ medical team at Melwood on Thursday.

Initial indications suggest the 21-year-old is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though it’s dependent on how his treatment and rehabilitation programmes progress.

Better than it being the ankle that was causing problems last year but still a big blow.

(Max of) 6 weeks would be about 8 games or so, right?

I bet Clyne gets playing time too.

I hate it for the lad and will miss him being on the pitch but I  somewhat relieved.  Having personally suffered tendon, ligament, and fractures, a fracture is the easiest to overcome both physically and mentally.

Bollix. Serious blow for us - him and Virg are the best centre back pairing in the country. Matip or Lovren should still be ok as partners, but neither is as good as Joe.

At least he's not out for the season - hopefully 6 weeks is the max.

Hope Burnley get relegated now, agricultural fuckers. Had just been feeling good about getting through an Everton game without any serious injuries (they were fairly clean for a change, in fairness to Silva).

6 weeks out plus time to get back to form. So probably more like 2 months at least. Sucks.

F**k sticks going to ground just to be "physical". All these "hard tackles" are just for the pussies who don't have the technical ability to play good football. Hope  that Burnley get relegated. Bunch of cu*ts, and their c**t of a manager.

have a good rest Joe come back in the new year stronger than ever. Dyche and his mob will go down with any luck. The referee needs to understand the game more and a wet surface does not give you license to follow through and take the man and the ball

It's a sickener - but it's what great sides have to contend with and the kid has delt with much, much worse.

Worth remembering Citeh without De Bruyne for damned near half a season (as we are with Ox) and Mendy pretty much all last season.....

It's sh*t but not worth dusting off the inferiority complex for.

I'm a bit relieved to be honest. I thought it was his ankle ligaments and it was game over for the season. Thank God it's not. 6 weeks is still not ideal but Lovren can step up for sure. He is well tamed with Virgil beside him so while he may not have the attributes of Joe and more mistake prone, he's more than capable as proven by his upsurge in form last season once Big Virgil came in.

Clyne suddenly becomes critical to us now that Gomez is out as he'll be the backup to Arnold. At CB we are covered well enough between Lovren and Matip, though it comes of the risk of injury since neither one is very durable, but if Clyne is not ready to go we'd have no backup to Arnold and that'd be an issue with such crowded schedule coming up.

Wouldn't shock me if we don't start seeing Phillips in more training shots at Melwood, both Matip & Lovren seem to get all kinds of niggles.

This season the players we can’t afford to be losing are Alisson, Virgil and Gomez so it’s a massive blow to have lost one of them at a critical time with games against Napoli, Mancs, Arsenal and City.

How does Clyne suddenly become critical for us? Gomez has only filled in at RB for Trent on a few occasions and given the fact that Clyne very rarely even makes the match day squad, it will more than likely be Fabinho that fills in at RB if and when it’s needed.

Clyne isn’t an option, except for maybe the FA Cup.
