Reports: Liverpool tracking PSG left-back Lucas Digne

Jack Lusby on Jul 22, 2015

Liverpool could be set to continue their summer of spending with a move for Paris Saint-Germain left-back Lucas Digne, reports claim.

Brendan Rodgers could add to his Liverpool ranks with a move for Paris Saint-Germain’s wantaway left-back Lucas Digne, reports on Wednesday claim.

Dominic King of the Mail suggests the Frenchman could be brought in to compete with Alberto Moreno.

“It is unclear whether Liverpool would look to pursue a loan or permanent deal for Digne, who has been linked with Atletico Madrid and Roma, but the France international has been discussed as an option,” King writes.

“Though Joe Gomez, the £3.5m acquisition form Charlton, has impressed as a left-back on Liverpool’s tour of South East Asia and Australia, it remains to be seen whether he would be ready for a full campaign in the Barclays Premier League in that position.

“Alberto Moreno would be regarded as Liverpool’s first choice left-back, following his £12m arrival from Sevilla last year.

“But he endured a difficult first campaign in England and he has had some minor fitness issues since reporting back to training.”

Moreno spent the majority of 2014/15 under little pressure for his starting role at Liverpool, with Jose Enrique facing fitness issues, along with an overriding paucity of quality.

King continues: “Jose Enrique is free to leave if Liverpool receive an offer for the Spaniard, who only has 12 months remaining on his contract.

“His status has been made clear by the fact he has remained on Merseyside, along with Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini, while the rest of the squad have travelled.

“Rodgers has always said that he wants competition for places and should they step up their pursuit of Digne, the 22-year-old, Liverpool – who have added six new faces so far this window – would effectively have two options for every position.”

King’s report contradicts suggestions that Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke will be the Reds’ last signing of the summer.

Benteke is set to join new arrivals James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino in Rodgers’ squad, with a £32.5 million clinched.

The signing of Digne would be a sensible move for Liverpool.

Moreno struggled for consistency in 2014/15, and while Gomez has impressed at left-back during pre-season, the 18-year-old has little experience of the role.

Digne was confirmed to have asked for a move away from Paris on Monday.

He made just 15 Ligue 1 appearances last season, but is a strong defensive full-back who is comfortable in possession and happy to drive forward to support attacks.

At just 22, he boasts four seasons of experience in the French top flight, having starred for Lille before his ÂŁ10.5 million move to PSG in 2013.]

On-loan would make sense. Cant see us spending after Joe's impressive performances so far.

But what if young Joe isn't quite up for the challenge of a full season with that much responsibility, or what if he gets injured? Are we ok with Moreno (also apparently having fitness issues) and Enrique?

I think that is why he is saying on loan.

We've been linked with Digne in the past. Might be a case of putting "past link" + "Moreno rumors," but we could very well be in for him if we do sell Moreno.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc claims they won't let Liverpool target Lucas Digne leave. Liverpool have looked at Digne as they search for another left-back to challenge Alberto Moreno.

The French international has told PSG he wants to leave because he has lost his place to Maxwell and is anxious this may cost him a starting place at Euro 2016. However, Blanc says PSG do not want to lose Digne, who cost them ÂŁ10.5million from Lille in 2013 and who has also attracted interest from Roma.

"First, it is he who very clearly asked to leave", Blanc told L'Equipe . "For now, he is with us, he is very professional, he trains very well and has prepared excellently. He has shown the results in friendlies. This is firstly a very good thing for him and possibly for us, should he stay with us this season."

So Roma linked to a Liverpool player AND a Liverpool target?!  :P

I'm confused...the title says that Blanc claims they won't let him leave...his last quote says "should he stay with us this season".

Doesn't really sound like "We aren't going to let him leave" to me.

I hate loan deals. Never seem to work out for us, think the last relatively successful one was probably Anelka!

I wonder if potential loan players look at it the same way.....seeing how our loaned players have not really made an impact they may be hesitant to come here on loan as well.

A young, natural LB to provide Moreno with some competition would be a good move. Gomez appears to be our second choice RB, so I could see Wisdom and Flanagan being sold if someone comes in for them.

Didn't they both just sign new contracts recently?

Not sure, but I still think we'd sell one or both if an interested party came in with a reasonable offer.

They've both signed new contracts and even if an offer came in, I think they'd literally have to drag Flanno out of the club.

Bring in Digne on loan, have him and Sakho form a good partnership, get rid of Moreno, have Enrique as a backup and Gomez as a backup to him when Enrique (inevitably) gets injured.

      everybody wins.

      yes.  Enrique.  Jose Enrique.

      he's no worse than Moreno.

Bring Digne in as starting LB, keep Enrique around if he doesn't mind not playing (which clearly he doesn't).  Worst case scenario, they both get injured and we put in Gomez at LB, a position he's done well at so far this preseason.

Yes. Enrique. Jose Enrique. The same Jose Enrique who was substituted after 45 minutes against Bolton.

How can you go from wanting to start Gomez to having him as third choice behind Enrique? If someone is your first choice and one player comes in... How does your previous first choice become your third choice?
