Have you got a midfield at the moment? It’s certainly weak to say the least.

It would only be weaker with Trent in it. He would only add to our play going forward and right now that is not the problem, the problem is we are leaking goals and look vulnerable every time another team strings more than a couple of passes together.

I don't think Trent in midfield is a bad idea but it has to be when we have the right formation and players around him to make it work, right now he would only make things worse IMO.

Strange, you admit he would add to our play going forward but that's not the area for concern. Obviously his RB place would be filled by a better, naturally defensive minded player, perhaps the Scottish young footballer of the year? It's as much about removing him from the defence, as his potential move higher up the pitch.

My point is we need to be more compact in midfield and protect our defence better as we are going for the high line approach, having Trent does nothing for us in that respect.

If we were not scoring then yes add Trent to the mix and see what happens but right now not getting clean sheets is our problem, having him in midfield will not help us if he is constantly getting bypassed.

If removing him from RB is going to help then just do that and drop him, we do not need to find a way to get an in poor player in the team.

It’s not bollocks it’s opinions Rossy as is yours. You may have a point mentally as I’ve been saying that about most of the team anyway because of last years exploits.

Take him off RB and his flaws will stop, that’s the point many are saying.

His flaws will stop you having a laugh.  Do you think you can just toss it off in midfield and not get back which is one of them ? Giving the ball away and losing possession does that stop when you move to midfield?

What makes you think that's gonna sort everything  Gomez hasn't been exactly tearing it up in the games he's played so far.

Of course not but he will not leave glaring gaps in his position. Also he's faster than Trent and recovery speed is one of Gomez's strengths.

I fear for Trent against Martinelli for example. He had a field game against Trent last time, and Arsenal have been in great form. Its not easy but it may be time for him to sit out a few games. The comments and criticism by Southgate has also not helped.

Agree with all of that apart from the poor player bit, poor defender (at the moment at least) Yes, but if he's a poor defender now, then surely he's still a poor defender having Been dropped?

The Scottish defender of the year that's been injured and not long back to first team training?

First off, Gomez had played great, until that stinker in Napoli. He sucked that game, no issues there. Secondly, atm we seem to need stability at the back, rather than bosses being whipped in the box. VVD and the MF have struggled thus far, and Gomes is a natural defender, something TAA isn't. You don't think he would improve us at the back at this particular moment?

I'm not giving up on Trent, but right now he needs a break. He's low on effort and confidence. Maybe watching the game for a few weeks would do his ego some good.

It's not just one game, he had a stinker against Utd too. There's a reason Matip was rushed back.

That's the boy, when fit.....but I would have thought that was obvious...Otherwise Jones and konate etc. would all be hobbling about the pitch!

All this bollox about moving him have you ever played football before . He is shot mentally and  do you think the basic fundamentals like will prove by moving him . He will still pass and cross well as he does at RB but the flaws that are there now will not miraculously  just stop

Can't believe people are suggesting it to be honest. He doesn't have the work rate or defensive awareness to play that role. It's easy enough to play through our midfield (particularly the right side) as it is now, we don't need to put Trent in there to make it even worse.

He just needs taking out of the team for a while, should have happened after Napoli.

So wait, he doesn't excel in those areas but you'd have him in defense and running more than anyone to get into attacking positions then get back to defend? That doesn't make sense.
Get a new right back in and move him into our uncreative midfiled because one thing he's deffo good at is picking passes out and he can defend, It has always made sense to try him there and they are already doing it but he still has to then get back to defend, just put him in midfield with this new Scottish right back who is signed but never on a team sheet, put him at right back.
It's all half arsed coaching, no innovative stuff going on any more. Not that I'm a coaching expert but our team looks so disjointed and confused all the time now.

Tried to block that game from memory. In all honesty, I don't remember him playing any worst than anyone else that day,  whereas Napoli, it was clear he sucked.

He is a natural RB imo, and thrives more there than at CB. He's more of a defensive rb than TAA

Problem is that then takes away from the attacking side of our game.

Joey can give you close to what TAA has given you this season on that side of the ball. Trents crosses have been poor and outside the Bournemoth game hasn't really contributed to our attack.

Again, when right, TAA is a very productive RB, and you deal with his shortcomings on the defensive side when he's assisting in the attack. If you play Joey you don't lose much atm, and Gomez is capable (not great) in all areas and has more pace. That will be needed against Arsenal and City

TAA starting the games it’s like a 100% guarantee we start each game 1:0 down. He was never great at defending and now he is low on confidence which makes it even worse.

Every single team that plays against us have figured that out by now. The Rangers game will be no different if Trent plays. Not even to mention what the likes of Arsenal and City will do to him

Where you going to play him as in this form playing him in midfield with the way out midfield is at the moment would be a disaster.

For me the first way to try and get him out if this slump would be to allow him to play a more basic RB role. Forget about joining the midfield, stay up and down the line support the attach and allow Salah to move inside.

Take up the positions Mo has been found so often this season and actually maybe try and cross the the big CF we've spent a fortune on?

That’s another valid option Si as let’s be honest, presently it just isn’t working for him at the back. Maybe Trent would welcome a change given the stick he’s getting, we can all see he’s on a downer.
