I've never known such a gifted player who comes in for such extreme criticism. The micro level of analysis on this fella is just pathetic. The man offers a dimension that no other. Anyone with a modicum of observational skills would realise he was one of the critical points in making us title challengers for most of last season. If he hadn't got injured after Christmas who knows what we'd have done.

Back to this match against Serbia - you can bet he'll come in for pelters from the pound shop National Front that is the England supporters while overlooking the atrocity of Phil Foden's performance who, as I type, is STILL on the field.

Exactly right. My feed the announcers dissected every little thing he did, ignoring how Rice and Kane and Trippier were completely mediocre. They did at least muse as to what Foden contributed.

You win the game with control in the moddlenof the park. Madrid have demonstrated that for about 8 years now. Trent can do a lot of fun stuff in the middle, but I also feel we'd lose a bit of control in the middle of the park and open the game up.

Starting to think the way to go is to put him at RB and get Fab 2.0. This is exactly the opposite of what I have been saying, but I think I'm wrong.

Want to see him up and down the right side of the pitch with the knowledge that his MF will allow him the freedom to play his game

I think he's a very good RB and happy for him to play that position. But he can Al's be a good CM, he just needs a bit more time to adapt to the position.

Virgil took some stick from Keown and Trent ho some stick from a pr**k on Talkcrap. Kate and Foden were dire and Depay was a joke but hardly a mention.

The Trent agenda from all the pundits is wild but I guess after Sterling fell out of favour they need someone else to make into the scapegoat!

Trent has been terrible again. I've never seen a CM/RB walk more than him. Literally couldn't be arsed when he doesn't have the ball.

It's not even a Southgate problem as we've seen it plenty of times under Klopp. Dude is only interested when it suits him.

      Was going to say

Whilst I do think he got unfair stick last game as he was decent

He simply ambles around and walks too
Much. Just lacks energy and that fire to cover ground imo

I’m amazed, he was given the chance to be a cm for England and had the chance to really impress but still can’t put a real shift in. If it won’t happen for his country at the euros, then sadly there is no chance of him ever doing it

Zero excuses for his lack of pressing and walking around. When do we ever see a midfield player in dm/cm walk around as much as this? It’s unbelievable, maybe he lacks a stamina to be able to do it

Great player but a luxury player for me. Needs to decide or be told to play in a certain position and F***ing work harder at it. Bit of grounding and the ingeeerland experiment is over.

Not a CM in a million years for me.

If he plays in midfield you'd be better playing him higher as an 8.

Hopefully he doesn’t play again now so he can be rested for us - stops him being the scapegoat

Hopefully we see him being used like Klopp had him playing before these experimental roles. Think Slot will recognise this with defenders who can work with it and stay fit

Mate I'm probably boring everyone as I've been banging that drum for a while.

Get him back to that attacking RB during our peak years under Jürgen and he's frightening.

Issue might be he's maybe had his head turned that he actually can succeed in CM.

      Not for me.

I actually think some of you being bit hard on the lad. Given the fact that Safegate making the whole team look bad you have to hold judgment.

My posts aren't really just about how he's playing for England mate.

More how I think he should be utilised for us and to be honest I'd play him as an attacking RB for England as well and drop Walker.

The whole England team played at walking pace to be fair, wasn't just Trent.

However I've thought for quite a while that he is coasting too much in games for us. And never thought he was a CM.

I stand by what I said before - that, if I was Southgate, I'd try him at left back. You're playing a right footed RB there anyway, so why not make it one who can ping a pass when he steps inside with the whole pitch in front of him. ( I wouldn't play him there for us obviously, unless maybe  Robbo was injured.)

In Trent's defense, he's never really been shown the love by the England camp.  The message to him the last few years has been -- "You are behind Walker, James, and Trippier in the RB pecking order"

Trent holds the record for most goals and assists for a fullback in a single Prem season.  Trent also holds the all-time assists record for fullbacks in the Prem.  He may not have the best defensive attributes for the RB options in the England squad, but he is far and away the best in terms of attacking output.

He's been moved into CM (not his natural / best position) because he is viewed as not good enough to play at RB and there is a lack of quality options at CM.

Some players thrive on confidence and feeling important to the team.  He may not be feeling the love from the England staff the way he did under Jürgen.

Either way, his performances in CM thus far have been dire.  We need to keep him at RB for LFC.

Agree with this. Rice was also walking around the pitch, awful compared to his performances for Arsenal. I think that they were both told to hold defensive positions to protect the back 4.
Trent looked lost but so did everyone in the team; maybe only Walker put in a reasonable performance.

I agree that Trent has been thrown under the bus a little.

You can't expect a player who doesn't really play in midfield just to drop on there in a major tournament, almost our of nowhere, as then expect him to tie the side together.

It was an awful performance for the most part, utterly stale, without vigour or drive from a team lacking in identity and just muddling through. Embarrassing really given how long Southgate has been there and the talent at his disposal.

To throw Trent into that playing in a position which is not natural for him and then to have a go isn't really on. A lot of Mr Engerland types at the pub I was watching were all cheering for him to get subbed and I assume ignored the fact that it was just as sh*t when he went off!

I'm with Lallana, just assume none of these guys play anymore. I don't give af about England (or the US for that matter). Only Liverpool for me.

Trent sucked today, plain and simple. But so did everyone else not named Guyhe and Walker. He's also being thrown to the wolves. Hard position to be put in,  and Rice was just as bad. Even Jude looked off

Still wish his performances inspired more. Very listless

If Trent is going to play in midfield for England he should come on for the last 30 mins. It's weird that Southgate replaced him with Gallagher and then brought on Watkins etc who actually started to make runs behind the defence.

Play Gallagher for 60mins, he can run around a lot, press and kick people (not necessarily criticising him, it's an important part of the game and he is a good player). Then give Trent 30mins when there is more space for his passing.
