How is it not being mentioned his horrific defensive coverage on the goal we conceded? He had no clue someone was all alone for hours and was able to head the ball into the middle of the box completely uncontested.

      He has horrific defensive lapses.

Anyone who has even dared to slag off TAA needs to have a word with themselves - this place is becoming worse than Twitter with all those social media fans who have never been near the city let alone the ground

He still needs to learn to defend though!!

Because it's glaringly obvious and has been for some time. When talking about Trent most people focus on his attacking game rather than his (lack of) defensive capabilities.

Its why I suggested way back to play him as a midfielder, take away his defensive duties, because he cant defend. Its more obvioys when VVD isnt there to help him out or talk to him.

The flip side of the coin is what he gives, or can give, attacking from full back was a massive part of our success, and can be again, when hes covered again by a world class centre half.

Trent's lack of form this season just goes to show you how world class VVD actually is. With VVD Trent himself was a world class player, and without him Trent looks bang average. Wild.

His defensive game is shocking. Forget PL level, it's not even Championship level at this point. City's first goal, Southampton's goal and Brighton's goal you can 100% trace back to him and there are probably more out there where he is solely responsible for the goal with his terrible defending. Needs sorting out asap.

Yet flip the coin & you get an attacking, assisting, pin point crossing specialist..

      You do indeed mate.

Problem is we haven't seen much of that player this season either.

Young player still though who's been unstoppable for a few seasons now and maybe going through an inevitable dip in form.

We have seen that very sporadically this season, however. Very. And his defensive game has undoubtedly regressed too.

Hendo in midfield would have covered that right hand side for him bombing forward, but now he is also thinking about the makeshift CB’s

A shitshow however you look at it.

Yeah he's had a dip this season, no question. Mainly going forward though. Defensively he has always been a touch suspect (just he makes up for it going forward). This season, he's been inconsistent going forward, and his defensive lapses haven't been getting covered by Gomez or Matip.

Trent was never great but never this bad. I’d say he was UNDERRATED defensively because I remember going up against City people would say “Sane is going to have Trent for lunch” but he would actually have a very solid game defensively.

This year, however, he has no clue defensively and his mistakes are of wide variety. Today it was he got skinned, against Brighton was his lack of positional awareness and not realizing a player was behind him all by himself and against Soton was his indecision and letting the ball go right past him.

      It was been very costly.

I still can't believe he let Thiago take that free kick, just outside the box when Sadio was clipped.

      That was Trent territory!

He's not adjusted to not having Matip/Virgil/Gomez covering for him (not to mention Fab and/or Hendo when they are in midfield).

Some of that's down to the player, some has to be down to coaching/tactics. It's not like it's not well known that Trent's better forward than backward...if you know he doesn't have the cover he usually does, there needs to be adjustments made.

I actually didn't think he did too bad yesterday barring that brain fart against Sterling.

Then that is something he should be working on, but I get the sense that he's a little bit too happy with himself, I think Roy Keane hit the nail on the head yesterday when he said some of our players are believing their own hype, and that I blame Klopp for, its his job to keep their feet on the ground but I think he's way to much of a softy, a bit like Roy Evans in that respect.

Sterling was a handful, but I agree Trent is starting to regain his prowess going forward. I expect him to have a big game on Saturday.
