As far as I'm concerned, he is to football what Gandhi is to India.

I'd say some of the current lot could learn a few things from him. But sadly, so much of it would go straight over their heads.

Growing up in Liverpool in the 60's and 70's wasn't a lot of fun but Bill Shankly made us all feel special he didnt manage just a football team he took upon himself the entire cities well being. He gave a sense of pride to everyone in the City and we all believed every single word he said because it wasnt bull sh*t it wasnt media speak it was what he believed and we all believed in him. What ever generation Bill Shankly managed in he would have been a winner. Its hard to believe its 40 years since he left the club and what a club he left and what a number two he trained in his own image. Genius of a man

He even trained a pretty amazing number 3, in Joe Fagan.
2 European Cup finals in 2 years as manager.

THESE 3 and then Kenny and Rafa epitomised LFC, as far as I'm concerned.

Read a book about Shankly last year, what a character! R.I.P.

Not just a character, I'd say almost God-like when you see pictures like those of Him standing by Lime Street with all the fans behind him or him walking round the Kop with the League Championship trophy and the fans mobbing him.

HScRed1's sig is absolutely right about the man!

"The socialism I believe in is everybody working for the same goal and everybody having a share in the rewards. That's how I see football, that's how I see life."

Bill Shankly didn't just invigorate a football club he invigorated a whole city.

The socialist ideology Shanks brought into the club, got everyone singing from the same song sheet.
It generated a fanatical fervour of support not seen anywhere before or since.  It's that togetherness coupled with his individual genius and man management which eventually overcame all obstacles.
There wasn't a club in the world at the time who wouldn't have swapped their manager for him.
      Unforgettable, irreplaceable.

I was in Lime Street on the Sunday they brought the CUP home,I had my lad who was 3 on my shoulders and the CITY OF LIVERPOOL was so alive.I was also at Anfield for the Inter Milan match and it was electric.Do you remember the raffles the club ran for the semi final against Chelsea,I was one of the lucky 10 winners and that was also a day (and night) to remember.

Can't believe it's been that long since my hero passed, loved the man and everything he stood for, my old grandad was exactly the same, he believed in the same socialist views that everyone working together would achieve more, no bullshit, told you how it was, honesty, loyalty, like my grandad I wish I knew him better, I wish I could have shared a beer or two with him and absorb his wisdom,

They broke the mould when Bill Shankly was born. What a man, what a legend and a absolute Gentleman.

Affable in public, but has a real ruthless streak, and always ready with a quip and a grin.

There was Bill Shankly, the Kop chorus, a pulsating Anfield and success guaranteed,  Seems light years away.

No, but if you have sky, bbc 2 Scotland is channel 970 at 9 and can be viewed nationwide if you get my drift

Good you noted that. If people don't have it on Sky then it will be available on iplayer. It's a real shame that the BBC won't broadcast it nationally.

All the bigwigs from FSG should be made to watch every second of the Bill Shankly documentary.Hopefully they will see what a club like Liverpool can achieve when a good manager has the backing of the board and a good secretary.

Did he always have the backing of the board though? Famously he'd fall out with them and resign once a year over disagreements with the  board.

His famous holy trinity was a dig at the board in all essence

My memories of Bill Shankly are he always had the backing of T.V.Williams and Peter Robinson and as I recall we were all shocked when Bill Shankly resigned.I recall that famous quote of his that the board are only there to sign the cheques when buying players.

I played on the right wing for Lister Utd in the Tuebrook Junior League u12's,u14's then u16's..must've been 75-77
We were a top team and a great bunch of lads.
Year after year we'd be up there fighting for trophies.
In my final u16's game in the May we played in a final at Three Butt Lane, family and friends in attendance and none other than Sir Bill Shankly was to be honoury guest and would be not only watching the game but he would be presenting the trophy to the winning team..
      Guess what?
      We got beat :(
so you can imagine how gutted I was going up to collect my runner up medal from Sir Bill..
At full time I stood in line and in tears as we went up one by one..
Dressed in his immaculate tweed blazer with his windsor knot red tie he shook my hand and nearly crushed it!
looked me in the eye and said
"You were brilliant today son, I was watching you up and down that wing full of spirit ,your mum n dad must be proud of you"

      Always remember that..

His attention to detail became the foundation of our legacy
Shankly's devotion and game knowledge mixed with the rest of the boot room boy's was and will always remain the envy of world football.

As a lifelong supporter of this great club of ours I'm indescribably proud to have had a tiny minuscule connection with this great man during my lifetime.

Here's a picture of the title winning u16 team I mentioned in my previous post..
I'm second from right front row..looking all young and innocent on it !
Probably taken around the time of that infamous final..
My brother reckons it was taken at Maiden Lane,Breckfield which was the Tuebrook sports leagues ground for Sat/Sun footie..still is apparently.
No idea what the other lads are up to now.. maybe some of the locals may recognise a few individuals?
Brilliant team, won the league that year, pipped to the double with a shady cup final defeat in front of Sir Bill..

Note the Luton Town home kit as our first strip.. ;D

I used to go to Melwood with my mates when it just was a couple of buildings.

No security .... we used to actually stand pitchside watching the training and the man himself leading the lads of the day.

      On BBC Sounds Now.

Interview with Sue Mc Gregor  and  Shanks in 1979 .

Quotes " I've got books.    I've got books worth a fortune ..... to me."

" Have you been to Workington ? Its halfway across the Atlantic ! "

He mentions how fantastic it was after he retired to stand on the Kop.  None of us then realised at the time what a privilege that was and the legacy it would lay down for the future.

      Fantastic listening to him.

I remember his town hall speech it was "Presidential" . Love the man and his words still make so much sense today
