Is that why he's "injured" to maybe escape punishment? And if he is injured, he shouldn't be banned because he wouldn't be available anyway.

I highly doubt Klopp would keep him out of the team with a fake injury to stop him going to the AFCON, that's to the detriment of our team and results. No player should be forced to play for their country if they don't want to, especially one that they haven't played for in 2 and a half years. FIFA shouldn't be able to punish him now when he's not played in the qualifiers, FIFA didn't have a problem with that ffs.

I don't think he is faking an injury, not playing for Cameroon was his choice and he was clear about his desire from a while ago. Doesn't make sense at all that a player could get banned for playing for his club (who is actually the one paying his wages) for choosing not to play for his country. I read that Matip is not the only played from Cameroon that withdraw from the tournament so maybe they have a big problem in the Cameroon FA that ney need to look into.

AFCON should move the Nations Cup from January, supposedly it is because it gets too hot during June-July, but looking online, in Gabon, the temperature starts to rise in mid December and the lowest temperatures are actually in June-July.

In reality, they probably can't. Matip missed last year's AFCON and stayed with Schalke, so there's a precedent there that works in our favour. It'd be a bureaucratic nightmare for Fifa to enforce, but it does look like the Cameroon FA will make a complaint to FIFA, which they are well within their rights to do in accordance with FIFA's rules on Status and Transfers.

      http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/administration/01/27/64/30/regulationsstatusandtransfer2010_e.pdf

The important bits are on page 34, 3.1 which states:

"As a general rule, every player registered with a club is obliged to respond affirmatively when called up by the association he is eligible to represent on the basis of his nationality to play for one of its representative teams"

And page 35, 5 - Restrictions on Playing:

"A player who has been called up by his association for one of its representative teams is, unless otherwise agreed by the relevant association, not entitled to play for the club with which he is registered during the period for which he has been released or should have been released pursuant to the provisions of this annexe. This restriction on playing for the club shall, moreover, be prolonged by five days in the event that the player, for whatsoever reason, did not wish to or was unable to comply with the call-up".

With that all said, as far as I'm aware there has never been a player banned for not representing his country when called up, so the precedent is all there for Matip to do what he wants. Just goes to show what a joke FIFA and it's "rules" are!

Matip does not get along with the manager of Cameroon as many of they're players do not, I remember the week we bought him Melissa Reddy saying he was not going to go to AFCON and this was back when we first bought him.

You can't ban a player who doesn't want to play for his country, Just retire from International football, the AFCON is a pain in the arse to european leagues, anyway players come out of International retirement all the time. Anyway who the F**k pays Matips wages? it sure aint fifa or cameroon.

This "fight" between club and country might not be over it seems. Hes been called up to the Cameroon squad and the manager expects him to fly out:

      from the guardian

      Quote
Liverpool insist they have no desire to get into a club vs country row over JoĂ«l Matip’s availability for Cameroon and only want to support the player’s own decision not to go to the Africa Cup of Nations.

The club are resigned to losing Sadio ManĂ© to Senegal’s involvement in the tournament this month, but understood the situation with Matip was different. He has not played for Cameroon in more than a year after a disagreement with the national team, while still a Schalke player, and said as long ago as September that he did not wish to be considered for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Liverpool actually thought Matip had retired from international football, but if so the Cameroon coach Hugo Broos did not appear to get the message and named him in his squad. The German‑born defender still has no intention of joining Cameroon in Gabon but Broos has indicated he may ask Fifa to invoke sanctions. If the ruling body suspects Liverpool of influencing the player’s decision or preventing him from joining up – something the club are adamant is far from the case – they could prevent him playing domestic games for the duration of the tournament.

Matip has been on the sidelines over the festive period with an ankle injury but Liverpool expect him to be ready for a return soon. They would be surprised were Fifa to take action against the player, for they were under the impression that Cameroon had accepted the fact of his retirement some time ago.

Speaking on the subject last month JĂŒrgen Klopp said he was relaxed about the situation. “The players make these decisions by themselves, there is nothing the club can do,” the Liverpool manager said.

The West Bromwich Albion right-back Allan Nyom also told Broos he wanted to stay at the Hawthorns to keep his place in Tony Pulis’s side.

really cameroon?  really?  did they have to actually name the player to their team after matip missed 3 games already in a row.  yes it is a liverpool conspiracy to keep matip back from playing for country just so we can park his ass on a bench.   1) matip is hurt. 2) he doesnt want to play for country anymore 3) fk off

Ok - ill be the one who says it... He should be wanting to play international football and should have gone.

At 25 he has many years left and playing at the top level will make him a better player. International experience is vital to all players, especially young players. Yes would be a massive miss for us, but he really should have gone.

Why should he want to play? He's played once for Cameroon since 2014. No he shouldn't have gone if he didn't want to and he didn't. Completely disagree with you when you say "international experience is vital to all players", it matters not a jot at club level.

How is playing for Cameroon in an inferior competition going to make him a better player compared to playing for LFC?

His own club and the success of should take priority.
Remember how Sir Alco used to always put a sick note in for his players when they were to go on international duty and the munts needed them?

Wouldn't agree with any of Sir Alco's shady manoeuvers but in this case common sense is the overriding denominator, who pays the players wages? Who bears the implication of any injuries sustained when they get kicked to sh*t playing for their country?

With Mane going on international duty Matip's decision is a lifesaver for LFC.

I think any professional player plays for his Club to earn recognition to be called up to his national team.

If you don't want to play for your nation then retire. You shouldn't have the right to pick and choose when he wants to play for his country.

He had a big falling out with the manager a bit ago, that's why he's not playing for them. He'd no doubt play for them if the current manager left at some point.

Rubbish, all most players think about in this day is their wage packet and trophies so unless they are French, Italian, German, Spanish, Argentinian or Brazilian they know they have sod all chance of winning any trophies for their country, at least not on the biggest stage. The only reason for playing for your country is to raise your profile so that you can get more money from a top club, either by renegotiating your contract or getting a transfer. Sorry to be cynical but that is the reality for the vast majority of players, how else do you explain the players going to China? Another thing is that the standard of top club football is much much higher than any international team, I would strongly fancy Barca, Bayern, Real Madrid and even the top 6 in the Prem etc to beat any international team now or from the past.
