Did a lot right against Leicester but yet I never feel confident with him defending.

Such a timid player for such a big lad - ā€œGentle Giantā€ never has there been a truer description of a player.

He's a decent enough deputy, but I miss Big Joe next to Virgil.

      This is spot on

He played well against Leicester... but there was something about his performance
      He lacks aggression and assertiveness

      Gentle giant is spot on

Don't dislike him and I think for a lot of the years say between 2010 and 2017 he'd have probably been our first choice and we'd be lording him.. but for a title winning starter? Not at that level.. Not at Virgil or Joe's level

Id happily keep him around but I think he would want to start so I imagine  he'll move on in the summer

Gentle giant for sure. I like Matip for the reason that he somehow carries a bigger goal threat than Virgil, he seems to get onto alot more in the box similar to Lovren. What i also like is that he looks far more natural stepping out of defence with the ball than Lovren and miles ahead of somebody like Sakho.
Unfortunately for both him and Lovren, the young Joe Gomez is a level above them both at CB at present.

I hope Matip remains fit and injury free until the end of the season, coz we are gonna need him.

Number of times he got caught flat footed because he charged in to make a challenge.
Sooner he goes back to 4th choice the better.

He's an ok squad player option that's about it.

      4th choice for sure.

Hopefully replaced with a better CB in the Summer.

I think I'd rather have Lovren out of the 2.

Have we kept a Clean sheet whilst he has had this run of games?

Genuine question, not being a smart arse.

In the last 3 games he played nope we gave up 5 goals though I wouldn't put it all on him, thought the last couple of game he was decent.

Was at fault for the first goal vs Palace. Needs to start switching on more and not playing people onside. Be good if he stops trying to run with the ball too, done it a few times and each time he is getting tackled and we are being left open in defence.

      Other than that, been steady.

Heā€™s been better than an admittedly ill VVD in last two games.

I think his awkwardness tends to undermine confidence a bit.

Donā€™t know what was going on with Virgilā€™s passing in the last couple of games, keeps over hitting them straight out of play half the time when heā€™s going across the pitch.

A few here claiming that we are  or should be looking to buy a CB willing to play second fiddle to Gomez and VVD, someone willing to sit on the bench
We should always be look at players that can come in and really challenge for those position and want to be the first choice starter other wise what are we really achieving...?

Didn't somebody point out that a lack of credible back up could be our undoing when the going gets tough.

      F**k. 5 Goals.

I agree he hasn't been to blame for our recent performances but he hasn't helped.

He's okay for fourth choice. In many ways I'm glad we didn't loan him out and play Milner there.

Came into the team well initially when Gomez was out but really struggled since that collarbone injury.

One to move on in the summer.

Weird how we see things differently.

I think VVD has been the weak link in the centre in last two games. Clearly only c.60% healthy.

Joel can be ungainly but I think heā€™s played well.

      Yep.
It's fashionable to gripe about certain players but give others a free pass.
VVD has been pretty poor since his illness.
No surprise when you found out he lost 4 kilo's from a frame that was hardly fat.
In many ways, I think an illness that causes such dramatic weight loss is worse than a physical injury, because it can take a while to put that weight back on, and get back to as strong as he was before.

      Matip has done pretty well.
He's usually where he needs to be, he defends a high line well, he doesn't get "done" very often, and he has the guile to take a yellow to stop an attack before it gets going.
Sure, he's not in the same class as VVD when both are fully fit and firing, but then who is.

Mad the way it's quiet in the player thread of a player who has being doing well when that same player is usually quick to get ripped when he's been sh*te.
