Thought he was poor against Porto but he more than put that right today, another very good performance from him.

Love how he glides up the field right through the center of oppos midfield, just that final ball needs fixing.

Bit of a resurgence. I think at this point he’s barely behind Joe (when Joes fully fit) as #2 CB.

We need to start appreciating this fella a little more!

IMO if Joe comes through Huddersfield with no issues, then our strongest back line for Barcelona is: Gomez-Matip-VVD-Robertson

The 2 videos above are great to show how good and underappreciated he is. Some of the stuff people have said bashing the guy is mind boggling. Just a very solid player. One thing you notice in the videos is that he needs to shoot more. When he's made it past the midfield and is approaching the other team's box, the defenders in front of him are collapsing and trying to cover our other players while giving Matip plenty of space in front of him to shoot. His passes through the middle that basically bypass the entire midfield are also fantastic.

Yep , could do with a couple of Agger shots.

This must be the longest run he’s had in the team since signing? Since Virgil came in he’s obviously been rotated but he’s staying free from injury now too. Only a broken collarbone happening in the last minute of a game has stopped him from having an even longer run in the team. Really upped his consistency too. Still has the odd sketchy game here and there but name a player that doesn’t from time to time.

He’s good for a third choice and much more reliable than Lovren, in that he is at least available!

Probably the best passer out of the CB’s but as a defender he is still liable to be bullied a bit too easily and is too hesitant in certain instances when urgency is required.

Probably the best 3rd choice in the league.

Better than a lot of 2nd choices in the league truth be told.

I'd rather we sell Lovren and keep Matip as our first choice as a replacement for Gomez and VVD.

VVD gets all the plaudits, but thought Joel was the pick of the two tonight.
Shame we conceded 3, but still thought he did really well.
Getting better at coming out of defense with the ball too, used to let it get away from him, but looks more comfortable bringing it forward these days.

Incredible tonight, best game in a red shirt. As a few have pointed out in this thread he has been playing well for a good while now.

Yup. A year ago, didn’t care if we got rid of him. But the last few months he’s been absolutely superb.

So good he's keeping Joe on the bench and rightly so.

He has been absolutely rock solid ever since coming in for Gomez, bar the one or two games where he looked a bit nervous. All in all, he has been a brilliant piece of business again by Klopp and the management team. Remember we got the lad in on a free transfer.

He's one of the best in the world at breaking the lines. It may not always look as majestic as when Van Dijk does it, but it's so effective and it always causes chaos with opposition teams. Great forward passing too.

It's also clear how good he is or can be when he is fully fit for a long period of time. Hasn't been injured for quite some time now (knocks on wood) and it shows that when he gets a good run in the team, he's a fantastic option to have.

You also never see him moan or hear even the slightest negative thing about him in the media or whatever.

      Brilliant performance Joel.

Who would have thought at the start of the Season, going form 4th Choice CB to certain starter in a European Cup Final? Just Wow!

Been class for a month or so now. Very solid defensively.

Whereas in the past I used to wince as he strode out with it, I have confidence in him now the way he is playing that he will break through the lines and pick a quality pass out.

He been putting in the type of performances that Lovren was doing last season which shows given a run of games and little confidence can do.
