Liverpool FC to play Mainz friendly in Germany

Liverpool FC today announced they will travel to Germany this summer as part of their pre-season preparations.

The Reds will face 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday August 7 at the Opel Arena in the city, home to the Bundesliga team managed by Jürgen Klopp from 2001-2008.

The game will kick off at 2.45pm UK time and will be the final pre-season friendly in a summer of warm-up matches that will also see Liverpool compete in four domestic fixtures, as well as the International Champions Cup in the USA and UK.

Billy Hogan, LFC’s chief commercial officer, said: “We last played Mainz 05 in a friendly in 2006 so it will be great to meet them again this summer.

“Our fanbase in Germany has grown significantly and this will be a fantastic opportunity for our fans in Germany to see the Reds play a Bundesliga team.”

Tickets will go on sale on June 23 via https://www.eventimsports.de/ols/mainz05.

Excellent for Jürgen to be taking the lads over there, I'm sure it'll be sell out too.

We're going to have a split squad taking part in pre season, those playing in Internationals and those not so games right up to the death for those coming back later makes sense.

Jürgen's already said some won't be ready for the early league games as they won't be as far along their pre season fitness sessions and depending on how far they go in the Euros some might only have just come back.

Looking at the dates if any of our players get to the final, they won't be reporting back until 8th August so let's hope it's not an England v Belgium final or we're fu**ed  :D

Also got the bloody Olympics too Debs. I believe Karius will miss the beginning of the season because of them. Probably others might too.

Tex and Ilori are going for Portugal but Tex isn't with us now.  Firmino hasn't been called up by Brazil but could have been so it leaves Karius but again there's no guarantee that he'll be called up either as Germany have so many keepers they could choose from.

More matches is all in the name of marketing, commercialisation and ticket money plus TV rights.

Welcome, businessmen owners and say hi to brand building. Cos we're a business and premier league football is a seriously big business.

plus we have a new manager and an unfit list starting at level 1 and they need a huge pre-season and genuine football training. but nah, it's all about business and money and woe football is fu**ed...!

      Quote from JD
Bit of a farce this year cos most 3Rd placed teams go through too.

The way I saw it was, it meant every game had something to play for, while just 3 of the 16 who qualified, did so before the final group game. It was the most competitive Euros ever.

Pretty much all our players are back now, and only Can has being spared the pointless trek to the far end of America.
