      New red card offences

      • 1. If a player confronts match officials and uses offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards them;
        2. Physical contact with match officials in an aggressive or confrontational manner.

While well intentioned i feel like this could open up a whole can of worms for inconsistencies.

      1. Foreign players can curse in their native tongue (probably wont be sent off).
      2. Rule is highly open to interpretation and there will be inconsistencies from refs.
      3. Matches will be ruined.
      4. As a fan watching from tv or in the crowd. Players will appear to be randomly sent off (can't hear the actual cursing) will cause confusion.
      5. A player simply cursing at themselves (for giving up a foul) could be potentially sent off.

Basically, I think its a dumb rule. Not sure why pundits are celebrating.

Actually it's a load of sh*t new rule then  because I was thinking what about when you swear at yourself in utter frustration because you've done something crap and expect better of yourself.
Yes, this could wreck some games.
Players surrounding the ref or going F**k off to the ref over a throw in for example is still out of order.

i think they should all be bookable offense but sending people off seems extreme.

I agree with Lineker on this it has been long overdue.  Players regular go too far with the ref when giving verbal abuse.  People like Rooney should be getting Red cards the way he goes at Refs.  I think a straight red will be harsh but should always be a yellow card, all day long.

Im all for this rule, the refs do need protecting, however the refs also piss off players and fans so a rule should be in place for them also.

      1) Should a referee fail to award a blatant foul in which results in free kick, penalty or some other game changing scenario, the player in question should be allowed a handgun with one bullet and a distance of 10 yards between that player and the referee. The player gets one attempt. Should that player miss, and the referee lives, then future decisions of said referee will never be called into question again.

Fairly obvious what's going to happen with this rule.
The Mancs Chelski etc will get away unpunished because the ref didn't hear the abuse or didn't consider himself surrounded/threatened.
The Burnleys, Hulls and Southamptons will end up with 9 men.

imagine this. Liverpool vs Everton, 5 mins into the game Flanagan gets booked for a foul on Kevin Mirallas. everyone thinks Mirallas has dived. Flanagan calls Mirallas a pr*ck. Ref thinks its directed at him. Instantly sends Flanagan off. Now its 11 v 10 with 85 mins of the game left.

Oh sugar, referees can be such frigging flippers. Is there a definitive list of prohibited swearwords?

Joking aside; if used consistently and evenhandedly this can be a great move and I welcome it.  :gt-happyup:

About bloody time, I can't think of any other sport in the world where the ref has to accept so much abuse from players. In the majority of sports if you say just one hostile word at a ref then you're out.

I think the title of the thread is misleading or OP misunderstood the rule change. As I understand it, you can swear generally, if a bad challenge hurts a player for example. You can't abuse the refs, swearing or no swearing.

You don't swear at the ref. Anyone who has watched or played a game of rugby knows how easy this is to do right. Zero tolerance. It's fairly obvious when you're upset with yourself and when you're screaming in the refs face/crowding him.

In no particular order: c**t, Puta, bad, boy, bubby.
The last three, put together in a sentence, has drama queens, from Oz to Brum, stop their (Xabi) pokey bum wa**s short only to damp their panty liners in anger... only to be used when you need a good titter at their expense.

      I get bored real easy.

If they are smart about  enforcing it, this should be pretty cut and dry. I don't think people are going to get sent off for just swearing at themselves when they screw up. If someone is in the face of the ref showing him up though, then  boot him. I have no problem with that. It's a bad part of the game. I also wish though that they would also include waving for imaginary cards in front of the ref....that's just as ridiculous and no less an attempt to show up the referee.

This new direction is so overdue, the disrespect shown towards football referees is astonishing, it doesn't happen in any other sport that I can think of.

I'm a little surprised. When I first heard of this rule change I figured I'd be whinging in a thread about how Rooney still gets away at swearing at the refs but the F***ing gremlin can't even get on the field.
