In some ways Iā€™d like to have seen him carry on and become a veteran for us because you do need a good mix of younger players and older heads. But it has to be right for all parties concerned.

If he fancies a challenge elsewhere, regardless of the contract on offer, I think if youā€™re not 100% all in you should move on, no hard feelings. I also think there is something to be said for not handing out very long/lucrative contracts to older players when you look at some of the disasters that have befallen other clubs.

F**k Phil.. Gini has done more for this club than that crippled c**t..

      Give him the 4 years..

3 year contract with a option of another year or incorporate his signing on fee into 4 year contract once his deal expires in July.

Think its hard to give long contracts at moment Shabs under the circumstances. Your doing well if you get 3 years let alone 4 at his age.

Not just age, but miles on those legs. He runs like crazy and is never hurt so he plays basically every game.

Reports are he wants 4 years and we offered 3. Who knows if the truth is something else, but even at 3 years it is not an easy decision because you are left with 3 key midfielders in Hendo, Thiago and Gini all 30+.

I agree on both counts. Surprised he was only on Ā£90,000 in first place when you compare with some of the other players. Even Ben Davis is getting Ā£60,000 and he's done F**k all so far.

Yea. TBF for himself leaving on a free, means he gets massive wages deal. so better for him.

Seemingly Bayern the faves for him.

So Gini has signed for PSG... It seems he changed his mind at the eleventh hour, after a very lucrative offer from Paris. I guess money talks after all. Bit disappointed in him to be honest.

Why would you be disappointment in Gini for taking the best offer on the table..?

      Iā€™m
Sure you wouldnā€™t turn down a lucrative offer if you were offered one at another work

I completely understand your argument, but I don't think you can compare Gini's situation with mine. Obviously, when it comes to money, we all have a different approach, but I believe someone at Gini's level already earns enough money to last 3 lifetimes. So while it is important, I was hoping it wouldn't be the main factor guiding his choice.
Leaving us for Barcelona kinda makes sense: whether we like it or not, Barca is a dream for many footballers and Dutch people have a strong connection to the club. Gini also has a good relationship with their manager, so he probably would have been playing on a regular basis.
Paris has none of those things. Not a dream club, not a strong league, and I'm not even sure he'll be starting many games (they desperately want to buy Pobga). So Paris only has... money. (To reiterate, he's entitled to make money his priority, but I do find it disappointing).

I find it disappointing that club never offered him the contract he deserved. We have lost a reliable key player in the team.

He has 4-5 years earning crazy money until he hangs up his boots. Cant really argue with taking a x2 salary increase to support his family and daughters for the rest of their lives.

I've turned down more money to stay where I am. Purely due to intangibles and culture. I could make a lot more somewhere else, but I'd be giving up on some things that you can't put a price on. I think it's a good point that's made, these guys have already made enough money that they could live for a few lifetimes if they have a good financial advisor....so to me the only reason I could think to move is because you either want a different challenge, want to live in a different place or work for different people. Who knows...maybe it's not about money for Gini but I'd also be disappointed if we offered him a decent contract and he refused in to take a big payday somewhere else.

I do think it's odd when on one hand people espouse the Socialist ideals of the club, then turn around and pat Gini on the back for going somewhere else for a big payday.

I thought it was a bit odd, too. I suppose when itā€™s a player youā€™re quite fond of it is said that the player is perfectly entitled to look after himself and his family, whereas if your pre-existing view is not quite so rosy, the player is more likely to be viewed as a sell-out who put money before his love of the game. We can all think of a number of players/managers of other clubs to whom the latter might reasonably be said to apply but it is less consistently applied to our own players.

Whether or not that applies to Wijnaldum of course partly depends on how we view his decision to spurn offers from Barcelona and Bayern Munich and to move from a team playing in the Premier League  to one playing in Europeā€™s 5th best league.

Nothing odd about workers getting the correct pay...

Only odd if your a capitalist expecting cutback on wages but expected to work for less..

No he wonā€™t but itā€™s a indication of what our owners think of a loyal servant to club who wanted to stay with improved terms...

Maybe he did get improved terms but still didn't satisfy his wants that doesn't make the owners wrong

The issue was length of contract over money from everything we have heard and then the offer went and thatā€™s what Gini has said people will know etc soon

Personally I donā€™t think the money was the driver for Gini, he could had he wanted to have demanded a new contract at numerous point over the last 5 years, his stock being very high post the CL win for example, he just seemed happy and thought it would come

What I think changed is the club made a decision on essentially 3 players
      Hendo
      Thiago
      Gini
Once we had signed Thiago it 100% weakened Ginis chance of a ā€œlongerā€ contract as if we had offered that we would have had 3 midfielders around the 33-34 mark by the time those contracts are at their peak

And if you look at it coldly, Hendo is skipper and vital to the squad, Thiago is new
Unfortunately for Gini he is the one to be lost in all that

Heā€™s been great, I love the bloke but itā€™s simple circumstances and I wish him all the best and hope he cashes in
